@4candles Wait a sec... There aren't as many repeats in this piece as I thought there were. He writes them all out! Except for like one in the middle, or something like that. So many octaves! :P
Mark gave me a copy of this disc as well - I believe he said he recorded it in a studio - cant remember which one but I assume its the same one where he recorded the symphonie. such a good recording isnt it? I like how much attention he pays to he ends/beginning of phrases.
excellent! i like the passage from 1:25 on, to me it seems there are some dynamic fluctuations, quick crescendos and decrescendos, very vivid. Seems like we have a new valiant proponent of alkan's music!
By the way, this piece sometimes sounds very similiar to chopins butterfly etude in the main theme (i.e. 0:06). surprisingly, chopin's op. 25 was composed between 1832 and 1836 and alkan's op. 35 published in 1847, so alkan must have paid a little homage here to his friend chopin.
Yes they were close friends, Alkan and Chopin, and the latter's death seems to have deeply affected Alkan.
There are a couple of other works where I hear distinct Chopinesqueries - one example is at 07:14 of my recent post of 'Chant d'amour - Chant de mort'.
@bchill69 Hi there. I received the disc from Mark without any specific information on it regarding the recording, except to say that it was recorded in 2010. I have asked him for further info (if he wishes to divulge), but no response so far...
5/8 makes me feel so fidgety haha (probably what Alkan wanted to make us feel).

A very clear and pleasant rendition. I'm glad that Alkan gains more popularity!

Interesting how he takes the repeats in this one, but not in No. 11. Also, I like the variety he adds after each repeat.
This is my new favorite recording of this etude! Thanks for the upload! I'm so happy to see more Op. 35's!
