Strangely enough, "What The World Needs Now" is reported to have made the Top Rock 40 in 1970... So even if she and her most avid fans didn't like the album the public seemed to have appreciated it somewhat.
Rowoches: I read in "Just Mahalia, Baby" that Mahalia considered "What the World Needs Now" a flop. She said it was not authentic and she resented Columbia for pushing her in that direction--thus her break from Columbia. Ironically, in the 50's when she joined Columbia, her contract stated that "Mahalia must have control over recording sessions." Apparently it didn't happen that way.
He may have thought this one was her last b/c he's not playing on "What the World Needs Now" album. But I always thought that Gwen and Charles were playing on this album...
Based on the album numbers, which are all chronologically noted on the album covers, this was second to her last album; WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW being her last. Both were recorded in 1969, and she left Columbia Records that same year. She lived 3 years after the 2 albums were released.
Ok, cool...well, I guess you can't rely on album numbers then.
Eddie Robinson was a great pianist/organist for Mahalia. The last time I saw him was on a video from 1999 at the Monument of Faith COGIC. He was one of the accompanists playing for Vernon Oliver Price...and he was tearing it up!
Rowoches: This album was 2nd to the last, indeed. I was buying them in those days. I found this on the rack in June of 1969. In December 1969 I found "What the World Needs Now."
Thanks so much for confirming what I already stated. Lol! Sometimes it's really not worth "arguing" points, b/c everyone "knows" everything. The album numbers don't lie. Lol! But yes, I've heard a couple of stories about Mahalia & Columbia after WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW was released. Thanks again!
This song is straight out of the Holiness Church.

"this world's in a terrible state, panderin' to the devil's a grave mistake
a fugitive in the land
harvest date of man
better turn back to God while you can
saints are praying down on their knees
crying, 'Lord have mercy please'
satan's roaming all through the land
claiming his souls off in from man"
please make corrections... ;)
