First of all, I love this little Puccini shocker. And second, Julia Varady is an excellent singer, not well enough known today. Thanks to cantorandopera for sending and to Onegin65 for posting!
@meltzerboy Yes, Sutherland sang Giorgetta on July 16th and 18th 1952. Those two staged performances were her "finishing project" with the Royal College og Music, and it was seeing her perform on this occassion that finally convinced the administration at Covent Garden, for whom she had already auditioned several times, that they should sign her up.
She is ROMANIAN, born in ORADEA (a town in the north of Romania). She studied with Romanian professors in the Music Unicersity of Cluj - town in north-west of Romania) and then in the Music University of Bucharest (the Capital of Romania), with great Romanian soprano ARTA FLORESCU. The Romanian singing school has a tradition in bel canto style and gave many outstanding names, like Hariclea Darclee, Vriginia Zeani, Nicolae Herlea, Niculina Carstea, Ileana Cotrubas, Angela Gheorghiu!
Cardinall, I agree with you that nationality plays very little in talent. I just always thought of her as being Romanian, but I see that I was misinformed. Regardless, she was/is amazing and we are all very lucky to have her artistry documented so well!
@mikebench Julia's last name is Hungarian. If you Google Julia's biography you will see that she is of Hungarian ancestry. Does it really matter? She is great singer regardless of her nationality.
I would just say, she is who she is, a very good singer, and an international figure. You better ask her what she considers herself to be. However, you would be better off if you would say that she is of Hungarian origin, born in Oradea, a town in the NW of Romania. She graduated in Bucharest, under Arta Florescu. One thing I do want to underline is that Transilvania is a region, not a country. Nevertheless, Oradea is not in Transilvania, but in Ardeal, close to the region you were mentioning.
From A Big Julia Varady fan there is a wonderful cd on the live Orfeo label no;C5790-41B verdi wagner strauss ect; all live Bavarian state opera a really Fantastic disc please check it out kindest regards Paul...ps Thank you Onegin 65 for the wonderful clip!!
What a shame her career was overshadowed by that of her hubby Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau! Although she did acquire a bad reputation for cancelling towards the end...
this is just sublime singing Varady !!!!!

Julia is Magyar (Hungarian). Google her name and read her biography. Does it really matter? She has such a great voice.

I thought she was Romanian... Maybe you are Hungarian and feel that all of Transylvania should be Hungarian?
