Whitney I love you! You are so awesome. I was a cancer patient recently and lost ALL my hair! Being bald is so depressing!!! Unfortunate fir me I am not a wig person so I just wore bandanas. Now thanks to your tutorial on bandana bags I can do something with them. LOL. My hair has grown out since December 2010 but it is still short.it is now just reaching my shoulder. I want to personally thank you for helping a cancer patient. You gave if yourself so a patient could be happy in knowing that t
I did this once about 3 years ago. I want to let everyone know that I got my hair cut at an Ulta salon. They did the hair cut for free and sent the hair so I didn't have to do anything. So, if anyone is thinking of donating that makes it very convenient. There might be more places that offer this, so consider asking around.
I am growing my hair out to do this. I am so excited! I have really curly hair, so my hair is technically long enough to donate now, but I want to have enough hair left for me once the donation is done! I'm hoping by the end of 2012 I will have grown enough to do the big give! :)
First off, I just love your sewing videos. I turned 50 yrs old last summer and I'm beginning to pick up sewing again. (I hadn't really sewn since I was in high school! Yikes!) Needless to say, I've needed some tutorials from you. lol Secondly, I'm so proud of your donation to Locks of Love. Your donation may pick up a little girl's self esteem as she loses her hair due to sickness. BTW, you look MAHvelous, dahling!!! lol
I have been fortunate enough to be able to donate for many years. Sometime this year I will donate for what may be my last time as I am turning 50 in April and am blessed with very little gray hair. Since Locks of Love won't accept hair that is more than 5% (I think) gray I will probably be at that point the next couple of years. Bless you and everyone who can and do donate.
@cnash962 That's awesome! Locks of Love does accept gray hair now...they sell it to help offset wig production costs. So it still helps even though the hair is actually being turned into a wig :)
I also donated my hair, I wish my hair grew that fast because I would do it again in a heart beat. What a positive way to start 2012. In a selfless act. Cheers!
I donated my hair too! In 2009 as well! did it because my best friends dad(ian)had recently developed a brain tumor(2008) and Died the following february. My brother (yes my 14 year old brother)had also grown his hair out to support ians cause. Ian had said that he wanted to be there when taylor shaved his head, but died a month earlier than the cut. Sad, but very encouraging for me and taylor knowing that we helped a child live through their devistation with the disease. We both received locks
@akire000mali I really appreciate your comment! I'm just glad I'm able to do what I can to help others! There's no sense in me keeping long hair when I don't even know how to style it...I would rather use it to bless someone else. I wish you, your sister and your family all the best!
I am so so proud of you! I did it years ago and think I'll do it again in a year or 2. Hair is just hair and it's such a sweet gesture to help those who can't grow hair :)Your new cut looks soooo cute!
I remember when I donated my hair, I did it in the fourth grade and had it boy short. I believe I donated...Alot. I think it was about 12/13 inches of my very curly hair. It took about 4 years to get it to that length again being that my hair got curlier as I grew older. I have to say it is such an empowering thing, atleast to me. My parents were devastated at the idea, but I got them to come around eventually. Much love~
@PurpleLuna29 Hehe I'm not that young. I'll put it to you this way...the first time I donated my hair I was interning at a news station for college credit. I've now been out of college over 2.5 years :)
Awesome Whitney! I donated back in September 2009 and am impatient to donate again! I need a few more months tho (enjoyed the short hair so much I kept it longer than planned ^^)
What an amazing thing to do! I know so many girls who would never-ever consider doing this, they are too attached to their hair. So kudos to you!! I hope I can do this in the future as-well! x
Wow, I decided to donate my hair again to Locks of Love when I saw your video. I've donated quite a few times already. My hair grows real fast so I can actually donate once a year. Kudos to you for posting this and getting the word out. I'm sure many more "locks" can be used for such a worthy cause ^_^
oooh congratulations on your donation!! My daughters hair is so long now.. i wonder if she would be interested in donating her hair.. she has beautiful hair that I know someone else would love as well!
You and your husband look adorable together! I'm currently growing out my hair to donate it. My friend donated about 2 and a half feet a few months back
and the award goes to.....you for being "SEW" so generous and caring for those that need to feel "normal" during a time when they have a burden that many of us will never understand. You are a beautiful person inside and out. Happy New Year =]
Good for you. I donated my hair once to locks of love, a few months ago, but I'm not sure if I'll do it again any time soon, since I like my hair long! =)
@bethdiy I donate elsewhere too after researching locks of love. I always assumed they donated wigs but no they sell them and not cheaply. I grow and cut my hair to be donated not sold so done one can make a profit :/
I have donated my hair a few times but not using locks of love because with some research I found out that you donate the hair but they sell the wigs to the cancer patients I use the organization pantene beautiful lengths once they make the wigs they then donate them to the cancer patients. But major cudos to you for donating your hair lots of people never do it .
Sincerly,
Bethany
p.s. I don't want to sound mean or rude in any way I am sorry if I came of as that to you.
@bethdiy Locks of Love doesn't always sell their wigs. The price is determined by the family's income- so they are sometimes given for free. The wigs go to children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss (not cancer). The wigs are made in a way that they will stay on (no matter what- even when swimming). This can only be done when there is no hair growth at all. When someone has cancer their hair will begin to grow back and the wigs will not stay on right. More below...
@aglanceatmyworld I also like that Locks of Love sells hair that is too short or unsutable for wigs to offset the costs of wig production. That way all the hair I donated will go to use (even though some was too short because of the layers). I'm not saying Locks of Love is a perfect organization...just wanted to share some of the things I've researched and learned over the past few years. Don't worry...I didn't think the comment was rude, you were just sharing other options to Locks of Love.
That's so nice of you. You look great with short hair.)
