  • I didn't watch this film until I was in my teens but I remember seeing this scene with the blood oozing from the elevators on TV as a kid. I didn't know where this scene came from and it totally creeped me out. Great horror movie

  • i remember this film. first scary movie in 5th grade. \m/

  • It had me staring in awe ...

  • This is a legendary shot for various reasons. It is very mysterious obviously...

But most of you don't know is that this shot took about one year to perfect. It was shot three times.

  • Anyone know the name of the movie playing on the TV right after Danny sees the two girls in the hall?

  • 29 People are fans of the Steven Webber Mini-Series.

This is one of my favorite Stanley Kubrick movies, and one of the best.

  • Just watched this movie AGAIN for the upteenth time. Even paid for it. A little halloween treat. one of my favs. still just as gr8 as ever!

  • It's called "Clockworks (Bloody Elevators)" Wendy Carlos wrote a bunch of unused music for the film. It's available on her "Rediscovering Lost Scores Vol 1" CD

  • Whats the music?

  • thats a shitload of blood

  • Btw one of the creepiest fucking trailers ever

  • wonder how this trailer was shot and how much fake blood was used and what not really interested

  • best trailer ever by the best director ever for the best movie ever based on the best book ever by the best author ever!

  • Come on, 21st century horror directors. Were Kubrick and Hitchcock the only people who actually knew how to make something scary? Plus they did it 40 years before you WTF.

  • I honestly fucking love this trailer. The whole sound is so eerie and distressing. The music in this trailer makes every hair I have stand up ...

  • what's the name of the music for this trailer? Can't find it on the soundtrack

  • What's the name of the track and the artist who does it? I'd like to use this piece of music in my Halloween playlist this year :)

  • It's the 2012 movie trailer music :)

  • It looks like Aunt Flo came to visit...

  • "Hmm...that's odd. Usually the blood gets off at the third floor."

  • i remember seeing this scene with 103 degree fever as a child. you can only imagine the delirium that ensued. i really thought that was actually happening in my own house not to mention it was turning sideways and upside down. SCARY O_o

  • i know why the kid saw the blood.because something was trying to tell him that his father was going to go Mickey Rooney insane and kill everyone.the twins i don't know.maybe Tim Curry lived there and killed them.and then RAPED THEM AS A TRANSVESTITE!

  • One of best trailers ever made! It doesn't actually show you anything but you still know what to expect. Shining is clearly best horror movie ever made. The reason why so many young viewers hate it is because they watch it few friends, talk about it and laugh to it. It's really one of those movies you gotta watch rather alone, with no breaks and with no discussions. Just let it take you into it's psychotic world and after watching the movie you are stunned!

  • One of best trailers ever made!! It's so creepy because it doesn't show too much. Or actually it doesn't show anything and it still lets you know what to expect. It's just best horro movie ever made. The reason why so many young viewers hate it is because they watch it with few friends, talk about it and laugh to it. It's really one of those movies you simply have to sit down and watch rather alone with no beaks or any discussions. Just let it take you it's world and it puts you into psychosis.

  • This reminds me of commercials for KOOL-AID I used to see when I was a kid.

  • Interesting fact about this trailer:

During the time that "The Shining" was released, trailers were not allowed to depict blood. Stanley Kubrick persistent as he is, was able to convince the MPAA board that the blood was actually just "rusted water" and the trailer was released.

    Gotta love Kubrick

  • Damn. Freakiest trailer ever.

  • soo creepy without doing anything really. Love that soundtrack . I hope "Contagion" has a similar creepy soundtrack!

  • Kubrick always had the best trailers. They always left you very intrigued as to what the film was actually about. The only good one like this I've seen as of late was the original Inception trailer.

  • Oh god that soundtrack

  • Aaaa, the music!

  • Scariest. Trailer. Ever.

    Period.

  • @JRserver lol, period. no pun intended

  • @JRserver HAHAHAHAHA. I GET IT ! "Period." ! That's genius.

  • "Hmm that's odd...usually the blood gets off the second floor."

  • @clashrogers "Shhh. Ya wanna get sued?"

  • @clashrogers LOL! The Simpsons

  • i like how this trailer barely does anything. it leaves you wondering what the movie is REALLY about.

  • Hmm, that's odd. Usually the blood gets off on the second floor.

  • The music's so atmospheric. Any idea of the track name?

  • ive been alone in the house for 2 days, about to watch this film, and Im gonna be up all night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If I was in this hotel, I'd definitely take the stairs.

  • *loudspeaker*

Jack and mop to Elevator 2. I repeat Jack and mop to Elevator 2. Thank you.

  • I went to a midnight showing of this a few years back. Even though I had seen it a million times before, it was seriously the most terrifying experience of my life! I had trouble sleeping that night...

  • The cool thing was, back in 19-nothing when this was filmed, they had to use real water and flood the room to show that... no CGI

  • That music. OH GOD.

  • Room 237 is literally Danny's (split) mind!

Notice it's the only double doors in the hotel.. more mirrors and reflections.

His number throughout the movie is 42, like on his sweater.

    2 x 3 x 7 = 42.

He's gotten Disassociative Identity Disorder, and has a compartmentalized mind, due to physical and mental violence and traumas.

Mother in denial until the end, then she realizes the hidden evil history of America, the Hotel, and the Family.

  • For every TRUE old school horror movies fans, check out the "Nasty horror flick a day" page on facebook =)

  • Hmmm thats weird, the blood usually gets off on the second floor

  • @niksta1 Why do people say that on every posting of this video??!! LOL Is it from something else well known?

  • @tall32guy Aha ye its from an episode of the simpsons lol type in on youtube, simpsons the shining, its worth a watch its funny as owt haha

  • I agree with the second highest comment. It's really annoying how trailers today give away the whole plot. This is an excellent trailer.

  • Hahahaha the only scary bit was the music :P

  • "Hmm, That's odd. usually the blood gets off on the second floor"

    Simpsons ftw

  • I can't believe that 2012 stole the music from this great movie. If you see the 2012 trailer (one of them) it has the same exact music.

  • @freddy3911 That is a fanmade trailer.

  • @Blacckkfire No it wasn't. It was the teaser trailer with the Chinese man ringing the bell in that tower.

  • @freddy3911 link me

  • whoa ! looks like someone needs a tampon....

  • *insert period joke*

  • this is kinda scary when you realize the eleavtor is making a face.

  • 29 Michael Bay fans visited.....

  • BEAUTIFUL FILM

  • Ewwh gross Thats sick

  • That's funny the blood normaly comes of on the third floor.

  • At the time of release, it was the policy of the MPAA to not allow the portrayal of blood in trailers that would be approved for all audiences. Bizarrely, the trailer for The Shining consists entirely of the shot of blood pouring out of the elevator. Stanley Kubrick had convinced the board the blood flooding out of the elevator was actually rusty water.

  • @sdasdfgdfsg Where was this movie filmed ? Is that a real mansion ? or is it a stage ?

  • @VenomFan1989 it was about a real hotel that is really suposed to be haunted

  • @bigw119 what's the name of the hotel ?

  • @VenomFan1989 i dont remember but i think its in Colorado

  • @VenomFan1989 Overlook Hotel

  • @sdasdfgdfsg I can't believe the board fell for that. :)

  • The only thing creepy is the way that person spelled it

  • the shining > any other horror movie

  • Why does the copyright say 1979? MCMLXXIX - 1:23

  • @rabbit605 That was when he finished filming the trailer. He started filming it in like 1978 or thereabouts and kept redoing it, until he finally was happy with it, a year later. Then the actual film came out a year after that.

  • At the time this trailer was released, the MPAA didn't allow blood in movie trailers. Kubrick convinced the censors that what was leaving the elevator was actually rusty water. True story.

  • ABSOLUTELY GENIUS....THE PROBLEM WITH TRAILORS TODAY IS THE WHOLE PLOT IS GIVEN AWAY BY THE END....YOU DONT EVEN NEED TO SEE THE WHOLE THING ANYMORE...JUST WATCH THE TRAILOR....WATCHING THIS,ALL U KNOW IS THAT SOME REEEAAAL BAAAAD SHIT IS GOIN' ON....AND YOU'RE HIGHLY INTRIGUED.....U WANNA KNOW WHAT IT'S ABOUT....GENIUS.....I'M A SMALL TIME FILMMAKER MYSELF,AND HAVE DECIDED TO EMPLOY THIS TECHNIQUE TO ALL MY FUTURE PROJECTS.....R.I.P. TO THE BEST DIRECTOR EVER....(in the history of the universe)

  • @TETTSUUO

I definitely agree. I don't watch trailers for that very reason. If a title of a movie sounds interesting, or a screenshot, then I judge from that. Stupid trailers nowadays.

  • @huyked....LET ME RESPOND BY SAYING....TRUE,YUP,AND TOTALLY...

  • @TETTSUUO

    Haha. Coo' beans.

  • @TETTSUUO i totally agree, trailer's give away who's going to die and how, and that's no fun. The point was to shock the crowd with the murder scenes and the ending. not give an overview of it in 1 minute or less.

  • @TETTSUUO "u" is not a word, and try to lay off the caps lock, it hurts my eyes

  • @TETTSUUO true. But im sure the studios don't want to take a chance on missing potential non-english reading audience, though i don't know what % of movie going public they actually comprise.

  • @TETTSUUO I love you.

  • That's odd. The blood usually gets off on the second floor.

  • @XTIMExTOxRISEX I know you took that from another video. That comment is on every video of this

  • @RamTerritory Actually, I took it from the Simpsons....as did every single person who posted it. Its from Treehouse of Horror.

  • @XTIMExTOxRISEX wow you totally didn't steal MisterHockeyman's comment

  • This is just Lindsey Lohan having her period

  • jesus that gives me the shivers man

  • I thought the blood was supposed to get off at the 2nd floor, odd

  • This isn't the alternate, this is the real one.

  • how come in the middle of the movie... he types the samething over and over again why is that?

  • Comment removed

  • @VideoFilmGuyAtNight Because he's a fucking lunatic!

  • I wish they would have explained how this scene was filmed in Vivian Kubrick's documentary.

  • Ok, who was the girl that had the period?

  • @Kinoksis rosie o'donnel

  • @Kinoksis Carrie White

  • @Kinoksis This is the Top Comment? Really, youtube?

  • @Kinoksis hahahahahahahahahahahahah!

  • @Kinoksis considering this is a Stephin King book, I'm guessing Carrie!! lmao!!

  • @Kinoksis rebbeca black?

  • @Kinoksis You think that was just the ONE girl? LOL

  • kubrick is a genre of film

  • thats odd... the blood usually gets off at the second floor

  • @DANNYH8497 Lol to simpson quote. hahaha

  • Apparently Stanley Kubrick convinced the MPAA that it was actually rusty water coming out of the elevator, rather than blood, so that they could get this iconic scene into the trailer.

  • i this real blood

Ugh and that just looks like water.

  • i used to run around the house saying REDRUM REDRUM! hehe wrong moie? not sure?

  • is it scary movie? should I see it?

  • @MrZipiR Yes it is. and yes you should

  • @keithschubert k thx man, gonna watch it tonight ;)

  • @MrZipiR howd you like it

  • @keithschubert awsome movie thx man !

  • I think I read somewhere that when Kubrick originally submitted this trailer to the MPAA, they wouldn't accept it until he assured them that it wasn't blood but rusty water that was spilling out of the elevator.

  • @Castellanos510 I heard that too and not that I'm complaining because this is one of the best trailers ever, how could anyone be tricked into thinking that was rusty water, its so obvisously blood.

  • You gotta love that Cherry Juice!

  • Does anyone know the name of this piece of music? Heard it in other trailers and I just find it mesmerising to listen to.

  • @sarpedon3 It was composed specifically for this trailer but has been re-used. Send me your e-mail address if you want an mp3

  • The wall of bullshit hits you for -94898159

  • MUSIC SCARES ME ALOT.....................

  • The lift scares me

  • Consuela "No...no...I no clean."

    o0o0o0o0o0o0o0o 0.o

  • Awsum movie. Creepy trailer.

  • Just realized the elevators make a face.

    OH SHIT.

  • @thickterranarmor Huh? When

  • @fallenanakin ALL THROUGHOUT.

  • if you put it in 1911 mode, it gives it a completel different atmosphere

  • @dododo8910 What's 1911 mode?

  • The told the the ratings that the blood was actually just "rusty water" which is why this trailer was aloud to be shown to all viewers. Haha.

  • @nabstudio He sure pulled the wool over their eyes huh?! The joke was on them! I'm sure they've probably heard about his stunt by now though..... LOL

  • This is not an alternate version of the trailer. This was the ONLY trailer for the film at the time.

  • @AJH0014 the opening credits was the classic mountain scene, silly

  • creepy music

  • 24 people are don't like things that are good

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • They just don't make films like this any more, If I saw a trailer like this in the cinema I literally would not know what this film could possibly be about only it instils this profound sense of dread that very few modern day "horrors" can do, and this is exactly what a film trailer should do. Saw VI, give me a break, The Shining is a an example of how the medium of film can create some truly amazing stuff.

  • If you look at the dial on top of the elevator, they kind of look like eyes.

Like the hotel is looking at you.

  • They'd probably have to kill about four elephants to get that much blood. Bastards at Warner Bros.

  • who wrote the music for the shining? brilliant!
