The murders were committed by a Team of NKVD executioners led by Blokhin. The Chief Executioner. He apparently wore a Butchers leather apron, galoshes and souwester cap to ward of the blood of his victims. They used German pistols as they so rarely jammed.

@sss7773 last part - The prisoners had no access to neither medical care, nor medication. Their daily food rations were made of half-a-pound of bread and watery soup. Moreover, the guards were robbing the prisoners, in some instances even taking their clothing.
There have been also cases of Soviet army executing Polish POWs when no POW facilities were available. Units commanded by Gayk Bzhishkyan murdered more than 1000 of POWs.

1) officially there was no war between Poalnd and USSR in 1939. So why officers were prisoners for almost 2 yeras as u claim? Even Germans did not restrained polish officers so long after september campaign
2) Last message from prisoners came to their families in early 1940. Suddently pencils and paper disapered in USSR tovarist?
3)Notes found near bodies had no info about Germans and their invasion only soviets. So sovietes or germans were last who they saw?

In addition to other top secret documents, a copy of a memo from Lavrenty Beria to Stalin proposing mass execution of the Polish officers was transfered from former Russian President Boris Yeltsin to Polish President Lech Welesa and was widely published.

@AnarchoCommunist1 All of the information I posted is verifiable through multiple sources - not just Wikipedia. You are avoiding and denying the reality that the Soviets committed the Katyn massacre. You called Gorbachev and Putin each "a traitor to the working class" because they "admitted the Katyn Massacre." What? Putin works for the USA? Hahahaha. The actual facts of the disclosures came from the secret Soviet archives which were opened studied, and widely published - not from Putin per se.

Two years later, on 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union by surprise. The Red Army was forced hurriedly to retreat and the Ukraine was taken over by the Germans. During this hurried retreat, it was unfortunately not possible to evacuate to the Soviet interior the Polish prisoners of war, and they were left behind to be taken over by the Germans, who then massacred them.

Poland forcibly seized back this territory, and kept hold of it until 1939. The Soviet Union reoccupied it after the Nazis invaded Poland and the Polish government fled. Hundreds of Polish army officers who had resisted the Soviet advance were imprisoned at Katyn in the Ukraine, where they were given road-building and other such types of work.

The historical context in which these events occurred arose out of the peace treaty that followed the WW1. After this war it was necessary to allocate disputed territories between various contending parties. To define Poland’s eastern frontier, recommendations made by Lord Curzon were accepted, but Poland laid claim to more territory than this, to areas largely inhabited by Byelorussians and Ukrainians to the east of what came to be known as the Curzon Line and which had been ceded to the USSR.
