I think it's about Paul Hester because he was manic depressive. He hanged himself from a malaleuca tree. In the video for this song the camera goes through the limbs of a malaleuca tree in a park. Maybe that's where they saw signs long ago that there were problems for Paul. Paul Hester left behind a "long term" girlfriend and two children. I'm not sure but that's my best guess. It was really heartbreaking when Paul killed himself.

If you listen to the song "Black and White Boy" about Paul, there is a line that says "when demons have climbed on your back, you are vicious and quick to attack", which suggests that Paul could have a temper at times. So, the "hold on my old time bomb", could be a way of saying although too late "don't give up" and the long-time partner may be a reference to the time Paul was with Neil in S.E and C.H.
