It's more of a depressed type of rock. not emo, but like... soulful. they all come from stories, the songs.

Pearl jam, nirvana and soundgarden sound nothing like eachother, how could they be in the same genre? Nirvana has a very punk attitude and music style, Peral Jam is hard rock and Soundgarden is still metal. Alice in chains is a metal band as well.

Seems like grunge is not really a musical style then. It has more to do with location than anything else and was probably a term made up by confused media trying to make rock and roll new again by giving it a new name and make millions in the process
