  • That first ghost story is just awesome. Gives me chills every time.

  • great cast and the adaptation and direction are good enough but...the book is worlds better. But then that's the way it usually goes isn't it :) Thanks for uploading.

  • Alice Krige is powerful and intriguing. Highly underrated actress-underrated movie as well.

  • Classic !

  • According to 8:24, the ugly naked chick in the bed hates little dicks.

  • i read the book twice

  • How apropriate that John Houseman is telling the opening ghost story, just like he did in John Carpenters The Fog a year earlier.

  • I remember renting this on a whim back when I was in high school in the mid 90's with no clue what it was about, and then it turned out to be so good! Thanks for posting!!

  • I've been wanting to watch this movie for sooo long. Thanks for the upload.

  • 8:30 Missed it by that much.

  • A 1 AWESOME.... GREAT TRANSFER.... EVA??

  • Craig Wasson----such an underrated actor of the 1980s, and his plunging naked down to the pool so dramatic!

  • liked it...nice story~

  • It's sad that you hardly see makeup this good in modern films.

  • Esse filme é ótimo, eu assisti ele umas duas vezes quando passou na Televisão! Pena que filmes como esses não passam +!

  • the funny part is...the old guy was right.....people only wear "fancy" cloths to weddings, funerals, & such.

  • The prettiest boobies a ghost ever had.

  • One of the very best original ghost story's, an actual movie with a GREAT story and you beleive it, like The Changeling (1980 with george C Scott)

  • She had a great ass for a ghost!! You should have just let her sleep you selfish bastard!

  • You may remember Alice Krige as the Queen Borg in Star Trek: Voyager.

  • I think him being naked is scarier than this female corpse

  • @trekkicat I will be having nightmares over that naked man for years...that corpse didnt do anything to me.

  • @Turnipgirl1 I dunno, for me it was the combination of that ugly naked guy FALLING down a building AND the corpse.

  • Why she killed thi young guy in the beginning of the film ????? I imagined her angry was just against the old guys, the ones that accidentally killed by drowing many years before.

  • There's good and not good about this movie.

Good - Original, scary story. Looks great, locations, sets. Music is great. Alice Kreig is great.

Not Good - I didn't feel that much fear or empathize with Craig Wasson. Wasn't too scared regarding the old guys either, to be honest.

  • Gorgeous naked craig Wasson!

  • Saw that movie with my grandma when it released in 1982 in France! One of the best ghost story movie ever made with a bunch of old actors as Fred Astaire but also introducing a young one in his debut "Craig Wasson" who will play then in Brian De Palma's "Body Double" in 1984. There's also the Philippe Sarde's "haunting" music! Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks egrly!

  • Alice Krige is fantastic. Beautiful, but very chilly.

  • where is his towel?! Why didn't that fall with him?

  • Love this movie,thanks.

  • I love John Housemans voice. He did well in The Fog telling the ghost story to the kids at the beginning

  • @prostockgirl Yes, he did. Good reference.

  • I remember when my family bought our first vcr. Ghoststory was one of the first movies my parents rented. Eva in her wedding dress still gives me the chills. Classic horror movies are the best! Thank you sooo much for letting me relive it all over again.

  • that man had a discusting chode

  • pretty upload

  • I saw this on New Year's Day 1982 after a lovely brunch with the family. Well made movie. It has a deceptive "wholesome" quality to it.

  • i seen this at the theatre in 1981 still an excell;ent movie. thank you for sharing.

  • the guy scratching inside the coffin still creeps me out!

  • Thank you soooooo much for putting this up, this movie is so badass.

  • A spooky movie.Scared the crap outa me,as a kid.Still does!

The late legendary actor/dancer Fred Astaire is excellent in this eerie tale.I read somewhere that he had great fun making it.

    Thanks for posting this,egrly!

  • Craig Wasson is so HOT!!!

This film and "Body Double" kept me doing nasty things to myself!!!!

  • this is the best horror movie after nightmare on elm street

  • peter straub's book?

  • ive been waiting for this movie for so long....i was still in high school when i first saw this...thank you for the upload

  • Not exactly how I'd like to die in the sack.... :)

  • i agree classic movie. miss those a lot. thank you so much for posting

  • LMFAO BEST DEATH SCENE EVER !!! I had a good laugh.

  • @guyfromcanadayup i have to agree with you there... but how the hell did he lose his pants?

  • Love the beginning so much the music

  • Wow, its been years since I saw this last...great ghost story, if you excuse the pun.

But I never did figure out who Eva was originally, since when she dissapeared in the 1920's, noone came looking for her...was she always a ghost???

  • aaah I can still remember the smell of plastic covers and dust of the videostore I used to visit every Saturday afternoon as a kid...the awesome selection of horror movies that I wasn't supposed to watch...including this one...movies that were so good and now so hard to find...modern times don't have the same taste of my 80's childhood. I miss my childhood...

  • @TheVideoCat same here, same here. my mom forbade me from renting any of those, but it never stopped me from looking at every box in the store with a scary cover in a clam shell box. Now I scour YouTube to find all the ones I wanted to see so badly then, only a few made it to DVD.

  • @TheVideoCat the 80 were a great time to grow up the movies were great but the cartoons were really epic then. heres to old times

  • @TheVideoCat yeahh so true, i remember the cover of those 80's horror movies and they were so freakin scary specially for a little kid, i mean even know you see them and maybe it won't scare you but it sure makes you remember the feeling of being a little boy and entering the Horror Section without permisson of your parents

  • @TheVideoCat I remember those days, and I also had a video store nearby run by an old codger who never had any customers. It smelled like old paint varnish and mouldy peaches. Independent neighborhood seem non-existant nowadays.

  • @TheVideoCat I know, right? Browsing through the horror section as a kid was the BEST... flipping the covers to see what gruesome pics might be on the backs... and the cover art back then was awesome too. Most of that is pretty much gone now, sadly...

  • @TheVideoCat you should be a writer.

  • thanks!!! never seen this movie but I remember how the vhs cover creeped me out as a kid...

  • Great film and scary memories from my childhod, why cant film makers make good old fashioned ghost stories anymore ???.......thanks so much for posting this classic film

  • people have no imagination they just go for pop culture shit now.

  • I agree with that! A lot of 'scary' movies now are so predictable

  • @veronicalake76 Ghost isn't that popular anymore :P now it's all about f*ing vampires and zombies :P

  • brilliant titles which give a clue to the story. All the idiots that are making negative comments havent seen this little masterpiece

  • this has such atmosphere. Its a brilliant brillaint movie. They just make shit like Sorority Row these days. And what about the four stars!

  • Damn it! That was one of the favourite movies of my grandfather. He was a real fan of Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Fred Astaire.

    Thanks for sharing! :D

  • deserves a better score- over-the-top bombast and grad-student atmospherics

  • the score was great I thought

  • @jwbrown1968 sorry the score is brilliant for this movie

  • It's based on the Peter Straub's novel, isn't it?

  • haha 08:23

  • Great classic.

  • I saw this when I was a kid and loved it! Thanks for doing this.

  • ahh memories...scary ass memories

  • FRED ASTAIRE!!! YAY!!!!

Thank you for uploading this - been wanting to see it for like a year.

  • Since I was a kid, Houseman's disturbing ghost story and the way he tells it still sends so many shivers down my spine - enough to make me want cremation instead of burial, just in case! lol. What an excellent way to start the movie though. Also the score is second to none.

egrly, you're a STAR, thanks for uploading this!!

  • Wait... where the heck did his pants go when he fell out the window?

  • I just read this book (again)!

  • I just finished reading it 10 minutes ago. One of Straubs best books.

  • Yeah she might assimilate you into a borg.

  • if you want a real horror movie...Rosemary's Baby!

  • Fuck, that shit is terrifying.

  • i tried reading the plot to this on Wikepidia and I ran out of flow charts:

""...but it seems that stevens' ex-wife's cousin new the secret. Several years later...we than jump back further...in 4 more reverse flashbacks, and 2 flash-forwards we learn margaret, wife to Max has a second cousin whose ex-husband...

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

  • been searching for this for a while. was 10 years old when my folks accidentally let me watch it and i've been afraid of waking up with that woman for years. more recent horror films with inferior make up have a lot to answer for! thanks for posting

  • Thanks so much for uploading this one! Wanted to see it for ages!

  • Movies today should really take some tips from ghost story especially when it comes to special effects. When the naked old man was falling out of the window, it looked real! Truly an underrated American classic!!

  • I wished that someday this dvd will released in Germany. !!

    Please Universal, come on please!!

  • Beautiful thanks 4 uploading this classic ;-) 5 stars

  • I wished i had this film on german DVD

One of the best Horror movies ever, i think!

  • I have this on DVD and every time Halloween rolls around it's one of the films that gets rotation. I wish I would have picked up Philippe Sarde's soundtrack when I had the chance---it's pretty pricey now and quite rare. It's on par with John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith (rip).

Note to Twilight fans---this is a REAL horror film with class and great acting, not hype.

  • Twilight wasn't mean to be a horror move, just fyi. It's more of a romance/adventure film. Those who classify it under "horror" aren't exactly correct.

And different tastes for different people. There are those who like it, there are those who don't. It's all a matter of respect for people's interests.

  • @Wytchfinde Absolutely.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I've read the book about a dozen times and I never get tired of it. Now I finally get to see the movie!

    Cheers!

  • awesome thank you!

  • Thankyou so much for posting this x

  • great American classic.
