In the 90's, and now even, it was typical for black metal bands to record with low-fi equipment. The style is often noted for it's bleak and dark effect on the music itself, and modern underground bands sound more like their 90's counter parts than the old bands themselves today. It really depends if the music and the recording fits the mood, but I'm neither for or against hi-fi recording, though I still dislike CoF's later albums.
