the fact that pesticides are useful doesn't excuse their misuse or make those problems go away. you ever hear about the affects of the DDT, organophosphates, or the inorganic pesticides (for you potato blight). our agriculture system needs to be approached from a different perspective with system stability and sustainability in mind over just producing high yields. some GMO's offer a great alt. to using pesticides in fact Bt cotton has decreased pesticide use in cotton by over 50% in china.
