  • Why are all the jupiter 6 demos so very bad ? Why are most other analogue synth demos better?

  • u suck at playing the jupiter, you should sell it.

  • Sounds alot like my juno60

  • @shckltnebay Your Juno has a band pass filter?

  • @voiceprint101 worst noodling ...perhaps, but you're missing the real point. it's pure analog bliss. so much deeper than digital can ever come. close your eyes and listen beyond the simple noodle:)

  • u can use a cv pedal for sweeping the p6.

  • What's producing that noise? The RE-301?

  • @MrCoenE The Camera's mic input has an auto gain that is poroducing the noise. I no longer use that camera for audio recording.

  • Is the space echo clipping on purpose?

  • Sounds like the Rocky IV soundtrack

  • :40 sounds like god yawning :)

  • This is a great demo of the character of the JP6 that I like. It's quite fun to tweak. What would be wicked with the tape delay is putting Osc2 in low freq. mode and cross-modulating Osc1 with various Osc2 waveforms.

  • I've totally spammed up your page with n00b questions. Feel free to get rid of any/all of them if it's annoying. Thanks for your help!!!

  • so I'm assuming ADSR number 1 (the one on the left) is for filters and ADSR two is for the VCA?

  • Just bought a JP-6. I love it but am a bit confused by how it's routed. Two envelopes that I'm not sure which does what. I can't figure out how to just use one oscillator and set it up... and then add a second oscillator and set it up independently.. I'm confused so far but I'm picking it up. Any suggestions on how to start simple and add more would be appreciated.

  • @freezazoid You can download the manual for free @ RolandUS dot com. If you want to configure a single oscillator and add the 2nd later, just turn the mixer counter-clockwise so you only hear Osc 1. There are 2 EGs: ENV2 is strictly for VCA and ENV1 is for both VCF and pitch contol of oscillator(s). I'd also recommend getting the Europa upgrade from Synthcom Systems.

  • @zibbybone : thanks for the reply. Yes, I have the manual. In the manual all it says about the envelopes is: it explains how an envelope works (which I already know) and then says "envelope 2 is the same as envelope 1"! wtf? anyway. thanks for your help. Is the chip hard to take out for the europa upgrade? I'll hit up their website and check it out. thank you!

  • @freezazoid "envelope 2 is the same as envelope 1" = typical Roland-ese. Japanese synth manufacturers have the worst manuals.

Regarding Europa, I had 2 JP-6's at one time, took the controller boards out, shipped them to Synthcom and had them do the install and change batteries. If you're handy with soldering, you should be able to perform upgrade yourself. Install instructions on their website.

  • @zibbybone : yeah... they both work like ADSR's but they don't do the exact same thing, otherwise there would only be ONE of them. I'm sorry if I sound like a total synth duffus... but yes I'm a noob and it's a bit confusing. I owned a polysix a few years back and the ADSR did what it should do... this seems weird to me. But thanks for your help so far. (one adsr controls filter and the other controls level? in the plysix the adsr only dealt with how the note comes and go's).

  • @freezazoid While the PolySix sounds great with its SSM filters, having only one EG is limiting for synthesis. With the PS-6, you can select the amount of EG modulation to the VCF and VCA or just select "organ style" gate to VCA. With 2 EGs on the Jupiter synths, you can have different settings for both VCF & VCA. You can have an instant VCA attack, but a slow attck on the VCF for filter sweep effect. You can also use ENV1 as a frequency modular for the oscillators -useful for osc sync sweep

  • @zibbybone I don't have my Polysix set up right now, but can't you set the VCA to gate for instant attack, and use the EG amount for the filter?

No way other than lfo to change the osc pitch though on the polysix :( having no midi sucks too

  • @Jordo54321 Correct. You can set VCA to Gate for instant attack & release and use the EG to modulate filter cut-off. Only way to modulate VCO is through the LFO. There are MIDI retrofit kits for the PolySix.

  • I agree with marantzamp. It's not as warm as the p5 but it does cut like a knife. I thinks it's better than an ion. By the way a rev 2 p5 makes the rev 3 sound a like a toy. Mamp sound get a rev 2 and see what he is missing.

  • great combination! Always found the J6 sounds better when wet (with fx)

  • dark melodies nice! ever had problems with the pinch wheel getting stuck? ive tried cleaning mine but it fails on me after a few weeks

  • I've never had a problem with any of my Roland synths' pitch benders getting stuck. There is a seller on eBay (chipsforbrains) that sells replacements.

  • Beautiful Sounds!

  • hmm how does one go about getting bargains on vintage synths? i know how to get guitars cheap but synths are a different story since you can wind with a total mess. if anyone has advice for me ill take it gladly

  • Ahhhh - to think I bought one of these and then sold it! I must have been crazy!

  • you MORON! :D

  • Thanks!!!!!!

But I do understand your comment....

However, there are other synths and things too!

  • that is one of the most wicked sounds i have ever heard. it screams 80s to all corners of the earth

  • Thanks! That's the JP-6's resonant mult-mode fiter in action, something the JP-8 and the other big analog polys lack.

  • ill bear that in mind, also is the re-301 stereo capable? or does it at least have stereo inputs so it doesnt canel out your stereo signal?

  • In all jp-6 demos you write the same things. I suspect you want to buy one in a low price! i have jp6, ob8, synthex, voyager, monopoly, ax73, polysix etc. and I could easily say that my jp6 is unique -sounds differently from the others! I may prefer my synthex, my ob8 and voyager, but the jp6 -if you have the ears to program it properly- give unbeatable vintage analog timbres -more complicated than polysix (which i think sounds more vintage).

  • Nope! I've owned two, and have no desire to own another..ever.

The synth just didn't turn me on soundwise..looks good though!

    My roland jx-8p sounds phatter/warmer.

  • well the jp6 certainly sounds very warm, but it's easy to get bored of it, fantastic as it sounds it only does so much and it's certainly not a jp8, but who has money for a jp8 nowadays

  • "Only does so much"? It does MORE than the JP-8! If it only had the same discreet electronics, it would be a monster! I have both (actually, all 4 Jupiters - I'll be making a video of all 4 soon, so SUBSCRIBE!) and prefer the 6's capibilites.

  • All the Jupiters are fantastic, and I would own them all if I had the means. I think the standard rule still applies that the newer ones are more advanced but the older ones sound better.

  • Seems like the kinda decision you might regret in ten years time ^^

  • very true!

  • ha ha

  • you sold a legendary analogue synth for a cheap digital modern synth? I am tempted to call you an idiot, but no Sir, you are not an idiot. You are a fool. OK, for an Alesis Andromeda this swap would have been acceptable but for an ION? Blasphemy!

  • Perhaps you are the idiot for saying that?

the jupiter 6 is not even half as warm as the ION. I owned two j6's and they just didn't cut it for warmth and punch, sorry.

My prophet 5 blows it out of the water.

  • @MARANTZamp lol man that was dumb.

  • Nope....the best thing I ever did.

The J6 just doesn't cut it in the warmth dept...the jx-8p I have is much phatter.

  • I love the noisy chorus and hiss from the whole thing ;-)

jp 8 or jp 6....both are valid in my opnion. different beasts for different things.

  • Sorry, the hiss is from the camera. Yes, the 6 & 8 are both great synths for different things.

  • wow intense = )

  • my fave synth.

  • Yes, the JP-6 is a very underrated synth overshadowed by its big brother: JP-8. The features that the JP-6 has that the JP-8 lacks are what make it so special, especially the resonant multi-mode filter.

  • i love them both. the jp6 is one of my faves but i would have a hard hard choice between that and the jp8.

  • Just picked one of these up off of ebay for 100 bucks shipped! I cant wait to play with it. This demo made me think of those 80s slasher films like friday the 13th and all the knock offs it created, im sure these were used.

  • wow! $100...OMG>>

  • 100buck.. BS!

  • Ok believe what you want, do you want pictures? Or would you like to talk to the guy i bought it from? Dont be jealous because i scored an awesome deal.

  • You say you bought a fylly functional Jupiter6 for 100$ ? It is something wrong here.. If it had been many years ago fine but today.. The seller must be an idiot.

  • Well what happened was, the dude found it in storage and had no idea what it was. He plugged it in and the chorus and delay did not work, He put in on ebay and I offered to buy it. He had an offer of 75 and i offered 85, plus 15 shipped. Sometimes when i turn it on the tape does not start and i have to turn it on and off until it runs and i guess this is what happened to him. Other than that it is fully functional.

  • I just realized you were talkin about the synth! I bought the Space Echo for 100 which is still amazing seeing that th go for at least 500. Im not a keyboard player but i do love the sound of old synths!

  • lol.. Ok, well. I'm sure it was a great deal for you anyway :) sorry about the miss..

  • Not a problem :)

  • Great video, Z! Tape echo GAS, rising...

  • I wish someone with at least some musical talent and chops would do these demos for once. Instead of dudes playing one chord with some filters and fx.

  • Give me an example of what you'd like to see. I have half-way decent chops, but most of my videos are only to show off the capabilities of the equipment. How many polysynths do you know have resonant high pass filters?

  • Yeah I understand that, I probably sounded like a douchebag...I wasn't "attacking" you personally or your videos, I was just talking in general... :) I was just trying to say, even though it's really COOL to hear what a particular instrument sounds like, it would be nice to hear something musical played on it, instead of the usual "C Major on the synth + Roland 808" variety you see all over Youtube.

  • I thought what I played here was quite interesting, espcecially since it was all improvised A minor stuff. But I do know what you mean about most videos (especially a particular channel you are subscribed to - I won't name names). I will try to make my vintage synth videos a bit more interesting. All feedback is welcome to help make my videos better.

  • I like videos that show off the capabilities of the synth!

If I want to hear compositions, I'll listen to a new wave/modern rock 80s station.

  • I hope that means you're enjoying my videos. I have a modest collection of vintage synths and try to make videos to help educate the differences with each synth. Many people think that one synth is all you need to make sounds. Let me know if there is anything specific you'd like to see and I'll see if I can accomodate.

  • Love the sounds you are getting :-)

  • add &fmt=18 to end of URL for stereo

    watch?v=I6RVQTUwwa4&fmt=18

  • it's mono...?

  • it's mono...?

ah no, sry, had to wait till you pressed the right side button ;)

  • Yes, the Jupiter 6 is very underrated because it is overshadowed by its big brother, the JP-8. The 6's resonant multi-mode filter is awesome! Best of luck finding one. When you do get one, you'll definately want to get the Europa upgrade from Synthcom.

  • i really want this synth!!

  • dude.... excellent. loved the end
