This earthquake was amazing. Too little for damage, a lot to feel. Where I live, everything was swaying a lot more, through. (it could just be your camera) I'm sixteen, I never felt an earthquake. This was an amazing experience. The bass sound of the ground before and during, the constant sway back and forth. Not just a rattle, but a sway. As if you were on a ride.
This isn't related to earthquakes, but may I say that your house is so neat and tidy? When compared to mine, it always looks like there was an earthquake where I live, but where I live the biggest earthquake that could ever happen here would be like 4.0 lol
Dogs can hear the rumble like noise before people do ... my dog started barking when the first one hit maryland earlier last year ...5:30 am and was smaller than this one ....
I thought my laptop was going crazy I felt it shaking while I was typing and it was sitting on the coffee table while engrossed in an essay for class. I stopped and looked at it like what the *bleep* and then really felt the whole house and all shaking. My hubby woke up thinking the dog was doing something to shake the couch ... I told him no the dog is sleeping beside me... then he said the cat did it. I told him he better wake up I think we had an earthquake nearby. Sure enough we did.
Well, the explanation is quite simple, as the earthquake occured two kind of sismic waves : Primary wave (P wave or compression wave) at a speed of 6 km/s and Secondary wave (S wave or shear wave) at a speed of 4km/s.
distance epicenter to Washington DC= is 135 km => Pwave travel time= 22 seconds
=>Swave travel time=33 seconds, Swave arrives 11 seconds after Pwave!
The dogs wakes up at time 0:01 and earthquake shakes at 0:1 +11s= 0:12s !!!
@ngatea21 No such thing as sensing it. These animals are alerted by the subsonic air waves that precede the shock wave travelling in the earth crust I thing. It would mean that the wave speed in the air goes faster than the speed of the shock wave in the earth crust. I have a hunch it's the opposite... Someone clear this out before animals are declared paranormal pleaze :D
@invisiblespandex No such thing as sensing you say, Wrong I have sensed something that has saved my life. An aw yeh.. Im guessing you googled it. Niiice!!
That was crazy wasn't it ? I Never been in an earthquake until today. I actually saw the floor roll. Makes me have even more compasion for those that have suffered higher magnitudes...
@DrackonKnight - all the way from Indiana here and I saw the shelving that holds the heavy cases of water bottles roll! It was within a quick blink of the eye.
Dogs are smart. I always know when a big storm is coming towards my house because they usually get really hyper and sometimes scared 5-10 minutes before a storm.
how big was it? I was in the christchurch EQ (7.1)

Animals just know. How? Frogs left a city in China 2 days before a quake? They have some kind of sixth sense that humans lack.
