See the movie "The Right Stuff". It depicts all those guys. He also broke a Russian altitude record(he left earth's atmosphere) but it destroyed the plane.

We're talking like 1944-1948, a couple years after WWII (Germans were also into supersonic). This was a major step forward aeronautics and paved the way for the rest of the X planes (including the X-15 which achieved speeds of mach 5 or for your tiny brain 5 times the speed of sound), and the X planes paved the way for landing on the moon. This isn't a children's book.
