He doesn't 'need' to use a pick. With the right way of approach, one can achieve much higher playing speeds with his fingers. The only 'benefit' a pick has over fingers is the more percussive sound, but there's a way to solve that too.

@RagnorBC But that doesn't mean that "this" bassist, at that time, wouldn't have performed better with a pick for "this" performance, because he just doesn't have the speed with his fingers [yet]. It's easier to get a passable level of speed with a pick than with your fingers at a novice level, because a pick doesn't require the coordination that fingers do. This is troof.

This is an awesome video, btw. The first time I've heard a distorted violin that actually sounded good.

You're right for most parts, OdaKa. However, if he has been playing with his fingers during his entire training, he won't be able to achieve such speeds with a pick either. Although mastering a pick is somewhat easier than mastering your fingers, both need practice to become perfect.

My point being, rather than blaming it on his playing style, it should be blamed on the amount of practice he had. Especially if this is a final exam for fine arts.
