I actually think this is really close to being the quintessential "perfect" song, at least according to my view of perfect.

I absolutely love how it starts completely slow, with very little instrumental backup to the vocals, and then with each verse the instruments and the verse slowly build up in intensity until going back to soft at "come out of your cave walking on your hands".

I think that this song is about someone who is broken inside (valley is empty inside) they talk about canonnbalism. I think this is about finding life or finding some kind of life to feed on something that will make them happy, comfort or trying to find the next step in life that will find satisfaction and when it says there's nothing left to eat. It means they find emptiness in everything.....it's a song about holding on to hope and finding peace and happiness living through pain to find it.
