nice cover, true to the original and he did mention it wasnt his song, i hate it when people bring out covers of other peoples songs and pass them off as theyr own. I like this, going on the ipod
i disagree on the whole(i think the best version is by BIG STARR. yeah. thats right) elliott smith was a very amazing man he could do a cover to any song and make it amazing
Big Star and Alex Chilton did the original and best version of this, but Elliot did a great cover. I wonder how much effect Alex Chilton had on Elliot Smith. It's almost like like Elliot picked it up 20 years later. Alex dropped out and Elliot dropped in. I think this is a tribute.
@ali191 That's cool. I think the best version is by Elliott Smith but that's my opinion. Everyone has their opinions on the matter. Any way it goes though, this is just a great song.

it's called SARCASM you brainless twit....look it up in a dictionary, if you can afford one on your meager salary from cleaning booths down at the gay porn video store.
He says, "Thank you for coming out" and I say< Thank you Elliott for existing in the same world I do. He is one, if not, my favorite singers because I can relate so much to his music and lyrics, RIP ELLIOTT FOREVER!
It's a testament to Alex Chilton's greatness that 90's and 00's artists (Wilco and ES) can cover his songs and they sound completely in sync with the band(s)' other songs. This is a great cover, impressive that he managed to condense the two guitar parts.
I'm sorry, but you are terribly misinformed. Thirteen was released by Big Star in April of '72. Elliott wasn't even 4 years old when the song came out. How did you get the idea that Elliott originally wrote it? He even said "How about a cover of a Big Star song?" in the beginning.

love the song ... but 411 elliott was the one who originally wrote and sang the song though many think it was big star but no it was elliott but i adore the big star version .. well i love them both
I heard the beginning of Quasi's "The Poisoned Well" at the end. Was that just edited in, or was Sam Coomes/Quasi also playing that show with him?

The way he says thanks a lot for coming out reveals who he was.

+1 ali191 - at least this is a loving tribute and not a desecration like Garbage's version.

I do love Elliott Smith's cover, though.

He went back in time
scribbled it on some paper
and looked and said "too simple for me.
Here Alex, you're in a career slump.
I'll cover it and you say you wrote it.
It'll be our little secret"
Yeah, :P
It's definitely a cover. :)
But his is SO good :D
