Big Star and Alex Chilton did the original and best version of this, but Elliot did a great cover. I wonder how much effect Alex Chilton had on Elliot Smith. It's almost like like Elliot picked it up 20 years later. Alex dropped out and Elliot dropped in. I think this is a tribute.

It's a testament to Alex Chilton's greatness that 90's and 00's artists (Wilco and ES) can cover his songs and they sound completely in sync with the band(s)' other songs. This is a great cover, impressive that he managed to condense the two guitar parts.

I'm sorry, but you are terribly misinformed. Thirteen was released by Big Star in April of '72. Elliott wasn't even 4 years old when the song came out. How did you get the idea that Elliott originally wrote it? He even said "How about a cover of a Big Star song?" in the beginning.

I do love Elliott Smith's cover, though.
