Who would dare click dislike on this ? People are ignorant...
I happen to be the proud current owner of this instrument and let me tell you, it's not as easy to play it as he makes it look. It's pretty damn big...
"these instruments must be so painful to tune!!! "
They certainly are. It's not just the fact that there are about 25 strings to tune as well. The pegs are much more primitive than a machine head on a guitar. They slide around and spin when not turned with the greatest care, not to mention the stiffness...
Excellent playing there, I always love to see Swan necked lutes in action,
By the way, do you need to have 13 courses to play the whole Weiss and Bach repertoire?
First of all, there are 24 strings and the tuning pegs are very simple to use-they cause absolutely no problems. Guitar type heads would be hideous and way too heavy. Yes one needs 13 courses to play most of Weiss and Bach.
Well done!!! I play classical guitar and I admire the sound of the lute greatly. The passion for the instrument seems to comeout while you were playing. Keep up the good work!!!
Wow Sterling! This is fantastic! I am glad that Mark and I stopped by the other night and you told me to check out your youtube video. I am not very familiar with this instrument but it's interesting how the sound is so comforting yet watching you play it looks very demanding. Excellent work! I had no idea that you lived just down the street from me, maybe I can come see a live performance?
Anyway, very pleasantly surprised by your talent! Keep up the good work.
(disculpa por escribir en español) La ejecución en general está bastante bien. Aunque el tempo resulta lento para el caracter de la pieza. tu instrumento luce fabuloso, parece de muy buena factura. Felicitaciones y adelante. Lucas de México.
I'm looking to aquire a 13 course baroque lute. I was thinking of ordering from Thames but I never heard of him before? Do you know anywhere I could get a decent used Baroque lute? I'm in Connecticut. Thanks.
iam an amatuer player and have played for a long time work and other things get in the way of practise Wewll done great sound one of the hardest achievements and lovely sounding lute, must get a bass rider for two more courses then i will have a 13 course instrument weiss is a buzz so organic he must hae been a midblowing player imagine the improvisation skill of a flamenco guitarist with stunning technique

Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some 1920's trading cards of musical instruments, including the Lute.

That's really nice. I hope you can post
some more vids. BTW...I'm curious. What is the
red colouring on the fretboard all about?
zzron 5 years ago
Hi-the red panel is padauk wood. The back of the pegbox is also red. You can see close up pics of this lute on the Thames website.

13 course baroque lute by Michael Thames. I'm playing an Allegro by Weiss.
