I believe that certain stones act like blank CDs or celluloid...and record (shadows and images?)...one day 200 years later, through the corner of his eye, some guy catches a glimpse of this...maybe a time slip, a flaw in the recording that makes the images appear in the modern time. Much like a Vinyl record skipping.
