  • I actually did an experiment where I ate low carb for one week and then high carb. The results? I noticed I felt kind of sick after a week of high carb, I also put on 4 pounds, even though I exercised every single day. The best way to stay on a low carb routine is to make sure you have a fat source with every single meal. If you have a lean protein like chicken breast, add some fat too it like Cheese or Bacon, etc. Also make sure you avoid sauces with hidden carbs.

  • I don't think I could do this, myself. When I get tempted by a piece of bread theres like this barrier that stops me. But I know if I ate something off plan that barrier wouldn't be there any more and I'd tip and probably eat and eat. But I totally respect ppl who can plan to eat off plan and go right back to low carb.

  • @79siggy I can't do it anymore either. It helped me at first, but not anymore.

  • Have you ever considered getting surgery to remove the excess skin from your neck? Your profile would look completely perfect if so.

  • No, my neck is the really bad part. It's the tummy that has a bunch of loose skin. $20,000surgery. :(

  • @livinlowcarbman apparantly an MSM supplement is a better option to tighten loose skin. BTW I don't think you need it at all, you look great! You both do.

  • @79siggy THANK YOU!

  • I prefer to consume healthy foods on my TKD carb loadins, stuff I wouldn´t have on the ketogenic days, but stuff that are nutritionally dense, like sugary fruits ( mango, banana , etc ) rather than the junk food I was once addicted to.

  • breaking weight loss stalls with "reverse diet" that means chocking your metabolism and a carb day may help you with this sometimes. And There are diets that cycle with carbs, if you read about TKD and CKD purposed by Lyle Mc Donald on his book "The Ketogenic Diet", Im am doing a mix between Atkins and TKD and Im having good results.

  • Great video. you know, I know people which are on mantainence that eat carbs every sunday for example. I think its OK to "cheat" sometimes as long as its not often and as long as you avoid to eat Carbs with fat as much as possible ( Carbs with fat are a bad combination, because the carb containt raises insulin and if theres fat to be caught in the blood it could result in weight gain ) But "cheating" sometimes is productive , because Atkins talkked about

  • I think I really might consider having something from starbucks every 6 weeks.. because right now, it's my biggest thing. I'm glad you guys shared this. It really helps =)

  • It's amazing psychologically how this can help you get to where you need to be. Today, four years later, I NEVER need to do a planned splurge because I've overcome my desire for those things I once thought I couldn't live without. :)

  • I read something some where that said the weekend splurges with strict dieting during the week can cause your metabolism to go way way down.

  • I'm not a fan of the "weekend splurge" strategy. It's a surefire way to fail. One splurge for one meal every 6-8 weeks. That's it.

  • I allow one cheat period (It varies from 1 to 12 hours) every weekend to eat whatever I want. I find I'm still able to go back on my low carb diet afterwards without any problems and still lose weight. I've lost over 100Lbs this way! It doesn't work for everyone though. Please forgive me Jimmy!

  • Whatever works for you, but anyone who tries your method or my method should be careful and know your own limitations! THANKS for you comment! :)

  • hey jimmy you know thats a scottish name right!!!

    do you drink booze???

  • Nope, don't drink! Stops my ketosis. :D

  • As always I enjoyed your video, keep them coming!

  • THANKS Tami!

  • It is me again, do you think 30 min of cardio will be enough 5 days a week and weight trian 3. On the other days, try to get 60 min.I am afraid if I only go 3 days a week I will put it off and end up not going at all.

  • You do what you can do, but you can never overdo it if you listen to your body. GO FOR IT!!!

  • Continued from previous comment: I have been going to the gym and working cardio for 60 to 70 min a day. Starting 12/1/07 I will start weight training and drop the cardio to 30. What do you think of that. I go to the gym 5 days a week.

  • That sounds like a GREAT PLAN! When I was losing weight, I did exclusive cardio. But I regret that I didn't starting weight lifting sooner than I did.

  • ur splurge may work for me I splurge on Thanksgiving &it took a couple of days 2 get back on track The splurge lasted 3 days but I think if I can set a day, next Christmas, next Easter, knowing will give me better control. Since I read the book I am in more control & more confident & starting to lose weight No hurry to lose 30 but looking forward.

  • Way to go beechinby9! :D

  • Can you have any of the low carbs food . I got a low carb wrap and it has 10 net carbs 31 carbs then it said 21fiber carb and I still have to read the book since I don't understand all the in and out , but since I started doing the Weight Watchers Core I have lost 8.6 lbs in 3 weeks. And I'm not hungry all the time and I have so much energy.

    Bonnie

  • CONGRATULATIONS on your success so far, Bonnie! We did an entire video on the low-carb foods we eat in Episode 11. Check it out! To calculate net carbs, take your total carbs and subtract the fiber and sugar alcohols. Easy peasy!

  • While splurges are NOT for me...I do know they can and do work for some folk...like my wife....it is interesting, after 9 months of living low carb, and losing 69 pounds so far, that people still ask if I can eat this or that on my "diet"....my answer is the same as Jimmy's...I can eat whatever I want.

I simply choose not to eat certain foods.

It's not as if when I reach my final goal weight that I will start eating high carb lifestyle again. This is a LIFE CHANGE...not a diet.

  • AWESOME abnormalslc! GREAT ATTITUDE!

  • Jimmy, wow, 30 slices of pizza??? How did your stomach hold all that much food?? Have you ever heard of the word "gluttony"?

Good reasons for not eating high carb.

    1. it's the kiss of death for those who have metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance).

    2. Causes havoc with blood sugar levels.

    3. It sets up a "sugar" craving in us that is like H-E-double-hockey-sticks to get over without bingeing. It's just not worth it.

I love you, Jimmy, but I'm going to pass on this one.

    Sincerely, Nana Babs

  • Thanks Babs! Now you see how bad I was before low-carb. Praise God I don't need these anymore. :)

  • For me personally I cannot do a splurge simply because I am recovering bulimic. I have decided that if I want something I find substitutions that are legal. If I would go back to the old ways I may start making myself puke and Aktins has has saved my life. Thing is I don't even crave splurges anymore.

  • AWESEOME, SkeeterN! I'm glad you have found a way to overcome the demons of your past. :D

  • Just wanted to let you know I have done the same kind of thing myself. I call them planned indulgences. I don't have a set time limit. But when I know there is going to be a time when I will indulge. I try to keep my carbs as low as is healthy for me for a couple days before. Like this week and Thanksgiving. Everything will be low carb but my mom's dressing. I know I will eat some. But only a little and only once. So I have kept my carbs low this week.

  • And it's probably helped keep you on the straight and narrow, hasn't it, vikki472? :)

  • "Cheating" is definitely a bad word to use. The only thing I miss eating is pasta really. Bread I can do without.

  • Try Dreamfields pasta if you TRULY miss pasta and want a good substitute. Shirataki noodles are also an excellent alternative.

  • Have you tried Spaghetti Squash? It's very good. The texture is a bit more on the crunchy side, but still very tasty. :) Give it a whirl if you like.

  • Great idea, I use a one meal per week where I indulge on healthier carb choices. That way I don't feel guilty(I am all or nothing)but allow myself to enjoy certain lc treats I regularly limit. Thanks for sharing, love the videos you two are excellent hosts!

  • THANK YOU for watching Lorraluvv1977!

  • I'm proud of my "cheats". Every Sunday, no matter what, I eat as much as I want of anything I want, all day long. It's my "Free Day". I consider it a cornerstone of my program, and I firmly believe that NOT taking it is the biggest mistake most people make when trying to lose weight.

  • CONGRATS, bsenka! If it works for you, then GO FOR IT! That's not to say it's for EVERYONE, but it obviously has for you. GREAT JOB!!!

  • OMG...planned splurge, with all that pizza it sounds more like a planned "pig out". My question for you then is did you still have your splurge during your 10 week stall? I have heard that getting out of ketosis for the splurge can actually help get you out of a stall. I am just not sure and would like to hear what you did during that time?? As I am still stalled out. Thanks

  • Hey Alis, yes I did splurge towards the end of my 10-week stall because I was frustrated. Again, it was the ONE meal and it was about a week later that the scale started moving again. Was it WHY I started losing again? Who knows...but I was happy to have that option of my sleeve.

  • Christine is the woman!! She can get away with a lot of carbs. By the way, do you think women lose about as quickly as men do? My hubby seems to be dropping the lbs left and right. I, on the other hand, am feeling that it's a tad slow. I am a little discouraged over it. :(

  • She makes me sick. HA! Men tend to lose faster than women, so don't let that discourage you. You can still lose weight slow and steady and that's all that matters. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Just do YOUR job and the rest will take care of itself.

  • My idea of a splurge would be a piece of cake or some ice cream. That is a real treat to me, but I'm not going to do that until my b-day (February). I can hold off until then :D

  • Sounds like the PERFECT "planned splurge." :D

  • I allow myself this option, but I've never used it. If I say I CAN'T have something EVER, it puts too much focus on it. So if I allow myself permission to have anything I want, I then usually realize I don't really have to have it. We are all so different what works for one may not work for another, we just need to find out for ourselves what is right. Happy Thanksgiving Jimmy & Christine! Donna H.

  • Good for you, Donna! I like that attitude and it's gonna serve you VERY well for a long time.

  • I'm kinda guilty for asking you that. :( I asked is it ok to "cheat" once in a while, but I'm not cheating at all! :)

  • You go boy! If you can get away with NOT doing this idea, then that's AWESOME!!! More power to ya! :D

  • I have tried to stop after the one meal but it creates a landslide for me. Its great we are all finding out what works for us. This can be a great tool for some. For me I eat every four hours. 5 times a day this gives me structure I need that. Great Show Bro

  • THANKS Paul! And I appreciate hearing how this worked (or didn't work) for you. I too eat lots of meals throughout the day...6-8 sometimes eating every 2-3 hours. It keeps my hunger at bay and I never feel deprived.

  • I am sure I could handle your splurge strategy as I heard you talk about it on your podcast. I just am so jealous of my progress. For those who can handle it I see no problem other than it's not so good for your health. You must've felt pretty awful after that pizza. Oh, I went to Regent U. also. Ciao.

  • Small world, Harknii! I agree it's not the healthiest way you can eat, but we are only talking ONE meal of your choice...and I DID feel awful afterwards. UGH! It was a good lesson about why I changed my habits completely and is a major reason why I don't splurge now.

  • I say pasta la vista baby to pasta. Get it. LOL :-)

  • Pasta la vista...hee hee! That's pretty good, Shannon! :D

  • Yes, Dreamfields is EXCELLENT, although I'd stay away from it until the later stages of your low-carb lifestyle. Or only eat a small amount since it can stall some people. Christine and I are still battling this nasty cold, but hopefully it'll be gone soon. THANKS tiparker119!

  • Do you recommend Dreamfield pasta for those that are on low carb...?? Also, Christine appears to be feeling much better...hope so..!!
