Wenever I go back 2 Eltrys there is another person there, wenever I kill him he goes on his knees 4 about 20 seconds then gets up again with full health, any1 gots answers?
This quest is seriously fucked up. I killed all the guardians inside the shrine, the message "Last witness killed" appeared, but they are still trying to arrest me when I get out.
Can anyone help me? I was up to the part 7:30 and i needed to talk to eltrys but he was dead? Now it wont let me continue with the quest. Im on ps3 also so i cant respawn him.
When I enter the shrine I talk to an imperial officer and that's it and he leaves and the guards just stand there. What should I do? What did I do wrong?

To all with the infinite markarth bounty: pray to the eight that you can go back into the mine or the beginning of the mission. When you kill any inside the mine, you go forth and kill madanach. Thonar silver blood personally gets the jarl to pardon you and you are freed. So basically, fuck the damn forsworn. I fucked up my first profile like that. Peace be with all of you.

@DoobieSnacks95 Yes once you go into jail a quest called "no one escapes cidhna mine" or something. Just follow the quest line and you are free to go with all your stuff back :)

Why does everyone have such trouble with this quest? You are mean't to go to jail and then a new quest starts...where you escape easily plus you get your stuff back and are friendly in Markarth :)
@TotallyFuzzedOut i needed time to stash all the stuff i stole in my house in markarth before i was going to allow them to arrest me. I tried to carry on the attack after returning from my house, but the option to give up is gone.... had to restart mission.
@bvialzrs Yeah you should have done that before you went into the shrine of talos. It can be annoying first time going into this quest. I saved just after nepo the nose and went back after I refused to go to jail :)

This sucks when i went to report back to Eltrys he was dead and 2 guards plus a Legion officer were standing there, i walked up to them and the Legion guy said i should join the Legion then he walked off and the quest arrow is still on the guard area. I can't finish the quest and this ending sucks! What a lame glitch, i read that if you have good reputaion with the Empire this happens, but iv'e dont nothing for the Empire so far. There were two different ways my brother and I each took upon being framed for Eltrys's murder.
My Brother's Redguard Way: RUN LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL OUT OF THERE! Results: Escaped but with a Bounty in Markarth.
My Argonian Way: Go peacefully to jail and, upon jail break, kill every guard and any witness that saw my crime. Also I had Arnean(was that her name?), the servent of Azura, as my partner. Results: Escaped Markarth with no Bounty. Sometimes, you got to kill from the inside, ya know?
Quest is bugged for me... I return to Eltrys, or whatever his name is, after investigating and the gaurds do nothing but stand there like a pair of plums...
this quest was so messed up for me. The way i did it i killed the prisoners as i escaped the prison so every time the gaurds talk to me they attempt an arrest, just because a refused to go to jail in cidna mine the first time. A minute later i did surrender and go to prison, but it's so glitched, the forsworn bodies are all over the city, they just never go away, so advice is this: kill the prisoners in the prison, not when escaping.
to funsize guy.. sorry im using my ipod but i was doing the same thing trying to kill that thoran guy and i you really cant. its alot easier to go in his room and steal his journal from him and pickpocket him and read the journal and youll get the evidence that you need.
just go to jail and help the prisoners,you will get all your gear back at the end of the prisoner quest and get to watch a nice little battle of guards vs prisoners. dont take part to avoid getting a bounty and just let them deal with it.
A friend of mine did this quest without having a massive bounty, what he did was killing all the Formsworn after retrieving his gears instead of fighting the Markarth guards. I hope this helps to those who are just starting this quest

@holymoses12345 Same thing happens to me. After the quest I had this massive bounty and I try to go to jail but the guard doesn't do anything. I tried to pay my bounty because I'm in the thieves guild but it doesn't let me do that either. So I can't go to Markarth without being attacked by every guard. My friend said that it could be because in the part where you meet the guy at the Talos temple and you find him dead, I killed the guards waiting. He said I was supposed to submit. Same for you?
@HadesLordofDeath yeah same for me but there still should be a way to clear your name after i have quests that require me to go in there and talk to ppl but its hard when you got ppl attacking you >.<
@holymoses12345 I watched a video that said that if you kill all the guards roaming around Markarth, then head to the Talos Temple, kill the left guard and the right guard and talk to the middle guard, it could clear your name. Apparently it works, it didn't for me, but it could for you. I also heard that fighting for the Stormcloaks and making the Markarth guards become Stormcloaks can also take your bounty away, I'm currently working on that one right now. Hope that helps.
To do this quest the right way and not get a bounty is go peacefully and escape the jail. You will be greeted by a silver blood who will say you have been pardoned. Thumbs up to let people know.

Don't worry about the bounty, just go to jail. It will lead to another quest that will involve siding with the forsworn and breaking out. After that, your bounty will disappear.

based on what you said, i sounds like that you and attacked imperial soldiers previously which led to a bounty, thus unless we go to the city where they reside we can get rid of that bounty.
If you're lucky, you can hurry and run out of the city and kill the guards while hiding on the stairs at either side of the entrance. If you manage to get all of them in that narrow space you should be able to "kill last witness" and remove the bounty

@drakhl2 You were supposed to go with them willingly. Now the bounty will never be dropped and you'll have to start all over seeing as some of your quests may take you back there.
Anyone else reading this, do the opposite of what is done here. DON'T attempt to use weapons or magic on any of the npc's that approach you at random. It's bad.
@ENBL3UD if you agree, to go to jail, they'll put you in the cidna mine where you can kill the forsworn leader (can't remember his name) and when you get out of the mine there is this silverblood guy waiting, and he gives you back your stuff and you have no bounty at all
i did that, but i still ended up with 1k bounty. Although it might be something i did b4 this quest. Thx anyway, if i ever replay the game i'll try again^^
@ENBL3UD If you run away without attacking them and kill the forsworn foreigners outside of markarth and keep running for about 100 meters then you are able to fast travel to wherever you want

@ENBL3UD Yes go to jail and finish the quest that way. You then break out with the forsworn king and he is going to get your gear and take responsability for the killings
that last part didn't happen to me they were was only a imperial trooper, and no guards attackedme, but for what ever reason the mission isn't complete
@bigboss2391 I think there may be a bug in this quest as I just tried to do it and like yourself, can not trigger the guards to attack me. I'm thinking it was due to the fact I had a bounty on me, even though it was only 5 gold!!!!!!!
@Rudy96734 Yeah see, it was too late for me since I've already done that and I really don't want to load an earlier save now. Even if you skip that step and you find him dead, it should still trigger the "why is he dead" option. You find him dead either way so I don't see why skipping it should screw it up. That leads me to believe that there is indeed a bug in this particular quest.
does anyone know if there is a way to get rid of the guards bounty on you after this quest? i tried killing all of them, bribing, breaking out of jail but they never leave you alone!
@isaacgant just let them take you in, you'll end up in jail with the king of the forsworn.....questing....get all your stuff back (the way I played it anyway) ;)
@duder113 yeah, but once i escaped a guy with loads of soldiers were waiting for me, had a fight, killed them all, but now if i ever go back there they approach me and tell me to submit (which i already did), then i am forced to fight them again! the main NPCs there always attempt to arrest me, so i can't do quests there anymore ¬¬
@isaacgant well, I escaped with the foresworn leader (he gave all my gear back)...they fought the awaiting soldiers, I just stayed in the back didn't join the fighting, when fighting is over no troubles :)
@isaacgant Seems like a have the same problem. When you say "I submit to jail" do 3 dots appear "..." and the guard walks away? I cant complete some Theif Guild quests because of this.

@isaacgant I KNO HOW LOOK AT THE SKYRIM VIDEO IVE UPLOADED FOR FUN WHAT YOU DO IS...... kill all the gaurds waiting for you to frame you, (from a distance like with magic) it "completes" the quest for you, and gives you NO BOUNTY, note: if it doesnt work the first time try again "DO NOT talk to them, just kill em from a distance. -ThanKS
@karmeneha ALSO!!!! NOTE you MAY only be able to do this if your a caster, since illusion gives you the "perk" quite castingit is highly likely you would need that perk (50 illusion 4 perks) too complete the quest in this manner!!! AND ThankS

I did the quest by killing the guards, and sprinting like shit out of Markarth.
Then I joined the stormcloak rebellion, played through the entire questline, and got stormcloak soldiers instated in Markarth instead.
I then had no bounty and no guards after me every time I went to Markarth, AND a snazzy Markarth guard's shield to add to my collection.
Problem solved.

You can finish this quest in 5 ways
1) Sneak Kill the 1st frame-guard and run. No reward. No Bounty.
2) Kill all 3 of the guards. You bet a large bounty. No reward.

A friend of mine did this quest without having a massive bounty, what he did was killing all the Formsworn after retrieving his gears instead of fighting the Markarth guards. I hope this helps to those who are just starting this quest

best way to do this quest is to go wearwolf and make sure they dont see you transform and kill all of the guards then you get no bounty

ok if u want help listen the guards in the talas shrine u kill them then go outside and put ur wepon away and then go to prison and serve time i tired the outher way and my bounty was about 20k

I did this quest upto the arrest like most peeps here, but I killed a douzen guards and fled, soooo what happens if I go back? can i just get arrested and start the next quest?

dude so after all this quests i try to pay off bounty they wont let me then i say im with the guild and they dont care then i say i submit take me to jail and they say im going to spend the rest of my life in the mine. after that it repeats and the only way to get out of the conversation with a gaurd is to either back out or say id rather die than go to jail. sooooooooo i cannot step one foot in markarth. anyone know a way to fix this? cuz i cant do anything they wont even take me to jail

@holymoses12345 Same thing happens to me. After the quest I had this massive bounty and I try to go to jail but the guard doesn't do anything. I tried to pay my bounty because I'm in the thieves guild but it doesn't let me do that either. So I can't go to Markarth without being attacked by every guard. My friend said that it could be because in the part where you meet the guy at the Talos temple and you find him dead, I killed the guards waiting. He said I was supposed to submit. Same for you?

@holymoses12345 I watched a video that said that if you kill all the guards roaming around Markarth, then head to the Talos Temple, kill the left guard and the right guard and talk to the middle guard, it could clear your name. Apparently it works, it didn't for me, but it could for you. I also heard that fighting for the Stormcloaks and making the Markarth guards become Stormcloaks can also take your bounty away, I'm currently working on that one right now. Hope that helps.

To do this quest the right way and not get a bounty is go peacefully and escape the jail. You will be greeted by a silver blood who will say you have been pardoned. Thumbs up to let people know.

Don't worry about the bounty, just go to jail. It will lead to another quest that will involve siding with the forsworn and breaking out. After that, your bounty will disappear.

based on what you said, i sounds like that you and attacked imperial soldiers previously which led to a bounty, thus unless we go to the city where they reside we can get rid of that bounty.

If you're lucky, you can hurry and run out of the city and kill the guards while hiding on the stairs at either side of the entrance. If you manage to get all of them in that narrow space you should be able to "kill last witness" and remove the bounty

@drakhl2 You were supposed to go with them willingly. Now the bounty will never be dropped and you'll have to start all over seeing as some of your quests may take you back there.
Anyone else reading this, do the opposite of what is done here. DON'T attempt to use weapons or magic on any of the npc's that approach you at random. It's bad.

@ENBL3UD if you agree, to go to jail, they'll put you in the cidna mine where you can kill the forsworn leader (can't remember his name) and when you get out of the mine there is this silverblood guy waiting, and he gives you back your stuff and you have no bounty at all

@ENBL3UD If you run away without attacking them and kill the forsworn foreigners outside of markarth and keep running for about 100 meters then you are able to fast travel to wherever you want

@bigboss2391 I think there may be a bug in this quest as I just tried to do it and like yourself, can not trigger the guards to attack me. I'm thinking it was due to the fact I had a bounty on me, even though it was only 5 gold!!!!!!!

@Rudy96734 Yeah see, it was too late for me since I've already done that and I really don't want to load an earlier save now. Even if you skip that step and you find him dead, it should still trigger the "why is he dead" option. You find him dead either way so I don't see why skipping it should screw it up. That leads me to believe that there is indeed a bug in this particular quest.

@duder113 yeah, but once i escaped a guy with loads of soldiers were waiting for me, had a fight, killed them all, but now if i ever go back there they approach me and tell me to submit (which i already did), then i am forced to fight them again! the main NPCs there always attempt to arrest me, so i can't do quests there anymore ¬¬

@isaacgant well, I escaped with the foresworn leader (he gave all my gear back)...they fought the awaiting soldiers, I just stayed in the back didn't join the fighting, when fighting is over no troubles :)

@isaacgant I KNO HOW LOOK AT THE SKYRIM VIDEO IVE UPLOADED FOR FUN WHAT YOU DO IS...... kill all the gaurds waiting for you to frame you, (from a distance like with magic) it "completes" the quest for you, and gives you NO BOUNTY, note: if it doesnt work the first time try again "DO NOT talk to them, just kill em from a distance. -ThanKS
