  • I could do without Joe doubling the head with keyboard bass. Apparently Joe thought one of the most popular bass melodies in history needed support?!?!

  • I love the contrast of Pastorius' manic movements and Shorter's statue.

  • Is that Neil De Grasse Tyson on alto sax? :-)

  • @djtahoe Wayne Shorter

  • @laszlowgmailcom I was joking...

  • @djtahoe the physicist?

  • @TheBillingerCrew I was joking...

  • great solo at 3:18 :) makes me smile kkkkkkkkkkkk

  • I absolutely love this - Thx for showing me this video Ed Motta !

  • jizzing for about 1:59 (from 0:00 to 0:53 than from 3:00 to 4:26 for the love of precision)

  • cannot dislike this, what amazing bass play, timing and everything just superb

  • 2:03 makes me smile

  • Fucking great!

  • acabo de comprarmeel dvd de Ofenbach...no lo puedo creer todavia, sigo tan maravillada como cuando lo vi en You Tube!...la mejor banda de jazz fusion de todos los tiempos!, con el mejor bajista del mundo!!

  • nobody sees this as totally overrated bullshit exercise, thats interesting

  • @roman14032: That's probably because it's brilliant.

  • These guys are all monsters...

  • Grande la Weather!!!!

  • The fearsome foursome, they are cookin' on this!!!

  • My Bass Hero! I almost went out because of Booze too,Thank God I escape that sentence to Hell.

  • 1 person clicked dislike by mistake.

  • Jaco Pastorious one of the greatest bass players of them all. Died tragically young for no good reason.

  • Zawinul is a genius!!! QEPD! R.I.P! and Jaco! QEPD! R.I.P.!

  • 0:35 If one was to name a drum fill which made the history of drumming this would be my choice.

  • @fardrum Yea man, no one plays that lick better than Erskine.... just spot on.... and the ultra cool extension at 4:55.... I MEAN COME ON

  • This take's me way back ... thank's for the memories my friend...

  • What's that cool bass run at about 1:36? Is that Jaco palm slapping some notes on his bass (like at 3:19 & 3:48) or Joe doing something? It sounds good.

  • @ocean4315 sounds like the bass drum to me... but I could be wrong!

  • Best version

  • ridiculous groove heaven

  • One person here wouldn't recognize great music if came to life and bit him on the ass!

  • Jaco Jaco. Jaco was a monster but lets not forget the other monsters on stage with him. Joe Zawinul,Wayne Shorter and Peter Erskin. This Weather Report was one big welled -oiled machine! Awesome! And they look like they are having fun too. I've never seen Wayne or Joe smile so much. This is peak WP right here in this concert. Good one.

  • @Fireye69 Absolutely!! Saw this lineup LIVE in Vancouver, Canada in the 70's when I was a 14 yr old kid. The entire band was brilliant!! And Larry Coryell was the opening act!!!! As you say...the whole band full of monster players...and when you see an entire show...it becomes REAL obvious how each member is so damn good!!! ~KK

  • These guys were all great. Jaco redefined the bass totally, his claims at the time have been justified by history. Desipite the fact that his fast playing has more original musical content than any other electric player I know, his slow playing was just as stunning. Wayne Shorter, is surely one of the greatest sax players of all time and also one of the most original. And Joe Zawinul is still (even though he's passed on) one of the most original keyboardists and composers ever.

  • oh yes this is great stuff !!!

  • 4:08 i'm a bass guitar player, and i don't fuckin understand what jaco does

  • Pastorius was undoubtably the greatest electric bassist ever. Takes skill to play without frets!

  • @Tenguforest Ignore the word "best". His playing is now a large part of modern bass.

  • life changer

  • jnerrot

  • there are zero dislikes this must mean that everyone can agree that jaco is freakin awesome

  • impresionante JACO el mejor de todos !!!!!!!

  • low key jacos mad that joe is doubling him

  • Been dying to see Alex Acuna play drums for years, thank you for the post

  • tht bassline is sooo sick....who the f--- is on thw drums he nasty

  • @Mccritical80 The Fuckin' Peter Erskine

  • @Mccritical80

Peter Erskine is playing drums on this concert.

  • HHHHMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!

  • One thing I love about Jaco is not only does he sound good, but he looks like he's enjoying all the parts of the song all the time.

  • great musicians and great music......

  • The greatest energy ever!

  • one of the greatest ever....missing them!

  • 0 dislikes, there's no one in the world that could dislike jaco.

  • SO JACO INVENTED THE MOONWALK WAAAAYY BEFORE MICHAEL JACKSON?!!? the way he floats across the floor is PRICELESS!!!!!

  • quand je pense que j'ai vu ces fous de mes yeux vus.

  • ... and such a historically outstanding performance without any music stand with sheet music on it (LOL).... Wow, is there anything that could compete to this nowadays?

  • @mperik71 im pretty sure the answer is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • jaco is awsome i am a big fan R.I.P. jp

  • There are some Jaco moments here that are really special as the solo section begins. I've heard so much of his playing over the years and he's really tuned in for this performance. It doesn't hurt that Peter Erskine is in rare form.

  • I love this group!!!!!

  • 2:08 LOL Jaco walking in a very funny way

  • @HandMane THE Moon walk...michael j. stole it from him........

  • nice...dress?

  • JACOOOOOOO, we miss you.

  • Martians from planet groove :)

  • The Jaco happy march...

  • this saxophone performance is kind of lame in my opinion... but jaco kills

  • @thuglordgthang I guess you didn't notice that there was a band playin' this, what is lame is YOU!

  • Jaco and Zawinul look like they're hardly working at all!

  • Who, today could compose such masterpiece like Teen Town ?

    Who shall deliver Jaco ?

This version maybe one of the best living one

  • @jazzharmonie

This is best version I have seen on video.

  • @5891jonathan I totally friggin agree with you. I love this performance.

  • I'm playing this song with my college's big band as one of two bassists - we get amazing tones when we combine his fretted and my fretless.

  • untoppable. I used to know that bassline, been a while since I played it. maybe I'll find that chart...

  • La band che 20 anni fa' mi ha aperto le orecchie , li ho visti 3 volte dal vivo ma mai con Jaco che invece ho visto con Bireli Lagrene ...che mito di bassista e Che Band !! Weather for ever

  • I can play it too.. OMG, it took forever tho!

  • Insane! I loved every moment!

  • Yeah, i can play the bass line of this performance, jaja.

  • man, this band prob had the highest caliber of musicians, each one of them are masters of their crafts

  • feel a LOT better seing that Z plays that line with his RIGHT hand...dayum! Unreal skills for the both of them.

  • God damned, i was born to late.

That performance is so splendent !

    Incomparable !

  • @Shelldamage me too lol

  • @Shelldamage

Splendant!...great word, might use that if its o.k. with you....

  • @Shelldamage John Francis Jaco Pastorius III, il tuo ricordo è sempre vivo in no iRiposa in pace.

  • @Shelldamage yes, you missed it...it was MAGICAL!

  • Yes, Joe and Jaco are in perfect synch!!!!!

  • yeah, def! It sounds like one guy with an effect on the bass, but turns out it's the two tightest guys ever. Imagine that, with Jarrett doubling the melody in both hands (you gotta know he could).

  • omg Jaco... what a shame he's dead...

  • J A C O ! ! ! !

  • Peter!!!!

  • Ok, I too thought this was the greatest version of Teen Town for some time... HOWEVER, i recently discovered the live version on 'Essential Jaco Pastorius' and its BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL. This one is still class also though, natch.

  • what the hell... this is too beautiful

  • This is the best version ever!!!!!

    Jaco Pastorius, IMORTAL!!!!!

  • God damn, that's even faster than the recording, and he's playing it like it's a warm up exercise. Unreal

  • when youve played it 450 times ,you too ,will plow thru it like butter

  • Peter Erskine is fricking amazing here

  • Fantastic live version!!!

  • soprano sax?

  • 5:04 does it for me!

  • i cry every single time i hear jaco because

    1. it is a beautiful and soulful display of talent

and 2. i will never be as good haha

  • don't worry ! no one will never be as good ;)

  • No, you won't, and neither will anyone else. Ever again. Don't sweat it bro!

  • Wonderful ! Ive listened to the LP track many times since the 70s and it's just as cool every time. but never saw this video until now, thanks ! There just haven't been this kind of combo lately, these guys really were an amazing combination.

  • I love it how they pick up from where the original track ends and keep on playing on a loop.

On a side note, this video shows Jaco's perfect balance of rhythm and melody. He's in perfect synch with both Pete and Joe. Fantastic.

  • Jaco playing with a smile on his face... that's what good music is about, making people happy and delighted. You can see that they are having a blast from being together onstage.

  • omg Mr Zawinul! leave the bass part alone!!!!

  • lol..... don't worry, it's supposed to double Jaco's bass -- that's the way they both wanted it.

WR was all about those kinds of coloristic blends. :)

  • Michael Jackson too ;)

  • @asdlocombian

Why should he not? he doubled it on the original Heavy Weather recording also

and it sounds amazing, but the post mixing could been done much better on this recording if it not had been recorded to a two track tape!

  • mejor impoooosiblee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Muito Bom!!!!!!!!

  • Comme un seul homme...comme sur des roulettes :)

  • Simply put, this music represents most fully the promise of "jazz:" interesting improvisation over an impossibly good rhythm section

  • I have new respect for the percussion of Weather Report

  • Man, that's my favorite version. Finally, a camera man shooting Jaco while playing Teen Town- a song he wrote. By the way, I have it in Jaco's handwriting if any of you guys want it. Contact me and you can have it free.

  • Why not post it here?

  • wow, amazing version

much better than the other one around at youtube

  • I saw Weather Report during this time period and I remember leaving the concert saying to myself, "if the inhabitants of Earth needed to send a representation of the advancement of our civilization into space as a greeting to extraterrestrial beings, then we should send them footage of a Weather Report concert." I still believe this. I'd send Weather Report footage of 1978 thru 1982 vintage, in particular; and fusion music in general.

  • The masterpiece sounds empty without manolo on percussion

  • please, he was out of his league. Glad he wasnt there so we can focus on Jaco.

  • glad is a heavy word for such a percussionist. still it was empty i focus not only on Jaco but on joe as well playin the same as Jaco .

  • NO. The Weather Report WAS Jaco for the years he was a member. By the way, I think Jaco wrote this song.

  • He did write it...and played drums on the 'heavy" album. , if I'm not mistaken...I was a music student ...drummer, and this tune was our grail...Hell, the whole record was...as well as RTF/ Jan Hammer Group

  • you are right. sometimes when you play a harmonic instrument you neglect the percussion. Manny actually really tight.

  • Jaco's music calms the soul.

  • This is my favorite Weather Report tune, and now I see this is my favorite version of it. On the original recording, Jaco is given credit for also playing the hi hat on this tune. Saw Jaco with his Word of Mouth Band many years ago in a small club in Santa Cruz, Ca. Erskine was on drums of course. Carlos Santana was in the audience and was very nice and easy to speak with. Jaco did a very cool solo much like the one he did with Joni Mitchel on the video that is also here on youtube.

  • where is this town they speak of?

  • yeah I wanna go and live there

  • achmood21,

If I am not mistaken, teen town is the name of a bar/lounge Jaco used to frequent when younger.

  • Such a beautiful band...Everything in it's right place.Jaco Pastorius at his best.

  • i beg to differ, i would imagine he was at a much more polished skill before he got into drugs, which I'm fairly sure he did around the time he joined weather report. I read somewhere that not many people got to see him in his prime because he wasn't as famous before he got into drugs, but I could be mistaken.

  • Masters at work ladies and gentlemen

  • smoking ending, good upload its loud and clear, thanks!

  • It's quite awesome that you seemingly put this whole show up. Thank you! Could you also post an order somewhere.
