Lee Hom has a pretty strong American accent when he speaks chinese normally, so I don't think he tried to do a so called "southern chinese" accent. I think he's just trying to cover up the fact that he has a strong accent.

what do you mean a Taiwanese accent? it sounds pretty standard chinese to me. there are so many chinese accents out there i guess its normal to mistaken it and often classify it to be either mainlanderish or taiwanese. but thats just wrong.

Southern accent sounds like Taiwanese accent. The R, Sh and Zh are not pronounced as prominently in the South.

Not everyone in China speaks with a Beijing accent. There are more than one accent in China.

Yes, MAINLAND Cantonese accent counts because they do speak Mandarin as their second language (the official language).

But Hong Kong Cantonese accent does NOT count because Mandarin is Not officially spoken in Hong Kong.

Southern accentS (more than one just for your info) do sound similar to Taiwanese accents.

China is a big country, Mandarin is spoken with different accents in different parts of China. It would be weird if every single person sounded the same.

Yeah! Mr James Schamus can be very proud of him. He killed the magic and the romanticism of the movie with only three words. Just compare the answers of Ang Lee and Tang Wei to the same question.

the interviewer isn't being rude. leehom's 2005&2007 CDs are described as "chinked out" albums b/c they blend hip hop with traditional chinese instruments (ie. the erhu). Leehom coined the term "chinked-out" himself

I think the interviewer was actually trying to defend Leehom from some of the criticism he'd been getting in Taiwan for his American accent in the film. That's the point of the song "Cockney Girl" as well.

Your first language is still more likely to be Chinese because the first people you learn to speak from are your parents, then you learn English when you start going to school and interacting with other non-Chinese speaking kids.
