  • If you knew your history, you would know that you have more in common with Taiwanese aborigines than you do with Polynesians...so why not get a Taiwanese tattoo? Please don't assume that I don't know shit about my history, how dare you. Ignorance breeds ignorance. You forget not everyone buys into the mainstream theories of origin. A tattoo

  • by a Samoan does not inquire we are of one or this "unified" race you are INDIRECTLY implying of. Because when you say "WE" I don't include Filipinos in my cultural ties and I would say, most if not ALL Poly's don't either. We missed you guys at our Pacific Arts Festival in Samoa this year...hmm I wonder why??

  • I don't look up my history on the internet and claim it to be the end all be all truth of who i am. Sounds like you do a lot of speculation of your own origin as well as mine, which hence, again as I will note, the FASCINATION becomes more and more apparent. Besides we were talking about tattoos, now you done opened a can of worms, which I don't think you know enough about.

  • Shot tekhele you tell these fiabotz....

  • our tattoos are uniquely Polynesian - can't speak for the South East Asian cultures, they carry different meanings - many Filipino "modern" tattoos replicate Polynesian designs within their own designs- not sure why, perhaps their fascination with the Polynesian culture - I've seen the old school traditional Philippine tattoos and they don't look anything near what they've evolved to nowadays - which in plain, is very polynesian looking.

  • not really.....

You dun know anything about ancient South East Asian culture, but you're right about one thing... Polynesian tatoos are different than South East Asians... In South East Asia, tatoo is used as a spiritual shield against evil spirits for woman who does fabric weaving, and as for man, a mark of warriorship and make invincible in warfare since most Filipinnos, Indonesiand and malaysians are ex-headhunters....

  • If you take a close look at the designs of Polynesian tattoos, they almost look closely related to that of South-East Asian tattoos. Particularly, the Philippines.

  • Philipinos are hospitable. i remember when i took a vacation there. there was like so good to me. and when i got my POLY TRIBE tattoo. they didnt let me pay. and its a big peice. im happy wid it

  • "dribbling"...i want one of these but tattoo parlours dont have these intricate designs.

  • omg i really really want a tatau! im 100% asian, is it ok for me to get one???

  • Samoan Tattoos baby thats what it is! Samoan Pride

  • Hey bro,

Been trying to get me a raro/aitutaki tattoo. Are you based in the NZ if not do you know any hook ups over here???

  • you should go to auckland and stop in at moko ink. a guy in there called croc does traditional tatau work, and is very, very good

  • you can visit steve maching out of western samoa tattoos in auckland

  • yeah,my uso andy works there too

    alofaz to ma peeps

    word ya heard

  • DATS TITE OOS!!!

  • is good

  • Does the tat at 1:50 hav a meaning or is it just to look good

  • all tattoos have meaning. each pattern represents something.

  • the tat at 1:50, thats wot im talking about!!!

  • I wont a samoan tattoo contact me please

  • whats the song called in the background??

    por favor!?!

  • it is on the credits

  • hey man love the vid and was wondering is it okay for someone outside of your culture to get tatau like that or something like that design??

  • The background song is by Bob Marley.

  • @sesilicious você fala português? a música é work - bob marley

  • samoan tattoos are cool

  • nice video bro.

  • do u do sogaimitis?

  • yes.I have been applying it to just family

  • sorry to correct you uso,but "soga'imiti" is the term given to "someone who bears the tattoo".the proper terms for the samoan tattoo the "soga'imiti's" bear would be "tatau" or "pe'a".i say this not out of spite,or to ridicule, but simply to help educate and to inform "all" about this samoan protocol we call "tatau".

  • nice work uso beautiful

  • super nice

  • Sole, don't hate, appreciate! Malo Mike

  • nah mike dont worry bout them HATERS! like the faka down below. when the ancients did theirs it was with what we now call "traditional", but to them, it was the "tools of the era". the tools we use now, i bet u nobody will be using it 2000 yrs later. its how a sole make his bread jumma1972. now go have a happy meal uce, and put a smile on, kottammit! malo mike, i "gant believeth"! good shit.

  • lol. good looking out, they got so much things to say. malo fa'afetai

  • it is disrepectful to wear traditional samoan style tatau without getting it done using the traditional tools and techniques. and all these people getting samoan style tataus when they probably know nothing about the culture is a joke. find an identity, know who you are

  • sorry you feel that way.

  • Soooo you should have to BE from the lineage to get that tattoo and have to get it done that way in order to be repectful? Cultures vary greatly even from town to town and theres no reason why you shouldnt be able to get whatever tattoo you want without offending someone. I am white/anglo saxon and I have a polynesian style tattoo. Its not just the history of one people but all people thats what seperates us as people is thinking like that.

  • part of the power and signficance of the traditional tatau is enduring the pain that comes from using the traditional tools. the aspect of pain during the process is important, as the person getting the tatau is sharing in the collective suffering of those tattooed before them. it is this pain that strengthens their personal ties to family, community, history, and culture, ultimately providing the wearer with a sense of 'completion' regarding his or her "samoanness'

  • You make a good point. And it is beautiful in the process as well as the visual side of the art.

  • i agree with you, i really love mike's work - i think his designs are awesome... beautiful workmanship. but i guess i'm also a fan of the tatau being done using traditional tools - only my humble opinion

  • I am a fan of traditional tools as well. Never had that done but maybe one day.
