haha i'm looking for alto songs for an audition and the title was familiar and then once i heard the first few notes i'm like uhhh nvm.. but this is wonderful! great vocals!
good job chelsea...you've got quite a gift there. not many people can do that you know. i hope you're taking voice lessons. once you've trained your breathing a bit more you can definitely go far. thanks for sharing.
Excellent job. Congrats on taking on such a difficult song and doing it so well... 99 percent of people would NOT have the guts (or even close to the skill) to take this on.
@WilliamsNexus Then you must see either Diana Damrau or Natalie Dessay, both are better in that aria than Kristin, Kristin sings it fine, but not great
that was fantastic! i wish you would have had a portable mic so that you didn't have to worry so much about standing in the same spot the whole time. i feel like if you had been able to move around you could have been more comedic in the presentation of the song, but nice effort on that considering the stationary mic. the singing was awesome! though i wish you had held those last several notes out longer.
her voice is extremely well trained. of course, over the years, her voice will mature and grow, along with her training.
and for the record, although opera training is more intense, glitter and be gay is an operetta, which means that musical theatre performers can perform this as well. we do get trained classically. and this piece is supposed to be "theatrey." it was composed by leonard bernstein....for candide....which is a MUSICAL.
very good for a sixteen year old. i'm sure she's got a big future ahead of her in the musical theater world, but opera, not so much. music theater sopranos sing this sometimes like Chenowith, but it always sounds very "theatery" with the spread vowels and whatnot. i prefer a legit opera voice for this, but she did a very good job nonetheless.
well, renee fleming, diana damrau, sumi jo, june anderson, maria callas, renata tebaldi, anna netrebko, etc. sounded like this when they were 16. it's called training. when you first start training at the collegiate, your voice changed DRASTICALLY. and then, at the graduate level, it changes drastically again. give her time. she very well could be the next diana damrua or sumi jo.
Oh, it is not true at all. This is going to be coloratura roles, not dramatic coloratura. Sumi jo or Damrau, are right; but her voice will never change SO MUCH and become like tebaldi's or callas'!
Absolutely amazing! I am very, very impressed for a 16 year old! Definitely keep up with it and you could be the next Kristin (if that's at all possible!) And as for the microphone comment...if you watch the Kristin version there is a little mic that you can see on her forehead sticking out of her hair. Take a peek at it. In order to hit these notes you have to be loud and powerful and seeing as she hit the notes...well, that's all I'm gonna say.
Secondly, besides the fact that shes singing at a recital, not on broadway, Candide is an Opretta, not a broadway show. It opened on broadway orriginally, then it was reworked and made more 'legitimate,' and that version has since been performed in opera houses around the world. furthermore, this song is very much an operatic coloratura soprano aria, this is far above and beyond the level of difficulty that typifies most musical theatre vocals.
also, the two of you argueing about the microphone, you're both wrong. The microphone is hardly doing anything at all, her voice doesnt sound amplified, and I dont know if youve ever stood 3 feet away from a soprano belting a high C, but theres a certain amount of intrinsic projection, singing loud enough is seldom an issue.
There is something very wrong with your statement. She is not belting a high C. And even the highest sopranos cannot BELT a high c. Look at yourself when you type. Besides this is a legit number, she is obviously singing it fully in head.
very, very nice, lovely soubretto voice. anything anyone says about the things she does wrong are minor at best, shes 16, this is extremely well done for a 16 year old, she has very good precision of technique and pitch. The little things will be worked out as she gets older im sure.
This girl had a great voice, good control and can emote even on the highest note. I don't understand the microphone comment....you don't think they mic broadway stages? You don't think Sarah Brightman uses a mic??? If you're trying to imply she couldn't fill the room without that mic then you shouldn't even comment. Clearly she has a powerful voice!
Good work!!!! She looks really young so if the criticisms here are justified then she has plenty of time to fix things. I think her singing was beautiful...
Wow... talent! This aria is SO difficult. I hope she goes on and works on her technique (supporting the high notes!). She has a seriously easy high e flat....
Violatenor: I think she could definitely have the voice for this (I, as a lyric soprano, certainly consider this opera), she still looks very young and has plenty of time do develop in whatever direction she wants to go. She's clearly very musical and certainly knows a thing or two about interpretation.
VERY good. Coming from someone who is both into Musical Theatre and Opera. and to that "violatenor" Candide is neither opera or musical theatre**, it is an Operetta. This aria, is one of the most demanding coloratura arias. high Eb's both sustained and staccato. and the "Ha Ha Ha's" are also quite difficult. Very nice job. I've heard many amateur versions of this song, this is the best. Of course not as good as a Chenoweth or a Cook version, but well on its way to being that good.
Who ever said your voice isn't supported... that's rubbish... you're obviously still very young and your voice won't be physically mature enough to give it the same support that an older woman would!
Ermm... Queen of the Night? I'd think she fit in better as Christine from Phantom instead... She needs more time before she can become Queen of the Night, though... Good voice to begin with by the way...
Okay, since I am coming from the opera side, I might sound snobby...This whole show (Candide)is acknowledged as an opera, unlike Westside Story. She sings it like musical theater...no problem. However, if you consider it opera (which most people do) she would not have the voice for this since most of her top notes are thin and not supported. she is not the right voice type for this piece-it too high for her. But, yes, she does have talent. And what is with the microphone??!!
your acting is good! you seemed sullen in the beginning and then happy later! your voice is very beautiful! and your pianist sucks. I'm gonna guess that he/she only practiced you for a bit before you had to perform? either way, awesome job! please post more of your singing!
Very good! But please get a better pianist one who will follow your voice, not one who just plays the music!!! My friend at University has just completed her final year and she performed this and the queen of the night aria, she is amazing, and I have to say you sound exactly the same as her, really lovely upper range. Hopefully one day there will be a video of you doing the queen of the night aria aswell. Good luck in everything you do.
it sounded a little rushed.. i think from you. maybe it was that piano glitch... i wish you had enjoyed yourself more. in the melismatic parts of the song you are a little slow. it is so hard to move your voice at a speed like that! you sound so great on top just throw it out there. you tense a bit on top notes when you have them so gloriously!!! well great job!!!!
This is one of my favorite songs, and of the few (5 versions I've heard including yours, all of which are professionals) yours is second only to Kristin Chenoweth and Natalie Dessey. Amazingly done! I loved the little trill thrown in there!
Don't you sign with an agent until I AM one. I will take you on immediately! THere are so many crappy people in New York who doesn't deserve agents...
Great Job, you should just let your scales go though! you seem to hold them for a second to long. Your voice must be doing some beautiful Arias. I'll be competing with you for the Queen of the Night Someday! Great Job Bravo!
this is just phenomenal! I love your voice and stage presence :D

Just out of curioscity, you proved that you can really wail on the high Eb's, why did you choose to sing the 2 short high Eb's in falsetto?
skitzo429 4 years ago
girls don't have falsetto....
tiernan87 4 years ago
When they sing Soprano / Mezzo-Soprano, the false sound they produce is called falsetto.
It's just more usual for 'falsetto' as a word to be given to men as for Soprano's / Mezzo-Soprano's it's a given...

By the way, only she can choose where she wants to go: classical music or musical theatre.
When I was eleven I was singing dulcissime from Carmina Burana... I know my high d was not supported then!
In the score of Candide the composer calls it a "comic opera" by the way.
