I've seen drills where they can row and/or slide lifeboats across semi frozen ice, they also would have stood a chance of freeing the man pinned in the wreckage. But then, that was 30 years ago. Hopefully by now cities are better educated/equipped to handle this.
I'm thinking, Where the f*&k are the boats for rescue?? I live in little old Dayton, OH where they practice life raft water rescues with our First responders. Hopefully, this has greatly changed over the years. Not sure if more would have been rescued, but like to think it would help. So sad.
@Roohski Most likely it was faster for the helicopter to pick them up than for boats to get through the ice. Hypothermia alone can kill you in minutes, not to mention their traumatic injuries.
I was just in Washington D.C. a couple of weeks ago and we passed over this bridge in a tourmobile. I asked the guide if this was the site for Flight 90. She nodded, but clearly didn't want to say anymore about it. There were still murmurs among the other riders about that being the site of the crash where this happened and may were craning their necks to get a better look. Nearly 30 years later, the events surrounding Flight 90 still resonate in people's memory to this day.
Sorry but they are dumb ass pilots who obviously have no commonsense or 'gut' instinct. And for that the loss of all those poor innocent people. A poor 2 month old baby. Same on them for not aborting the take off.
I was just a child when this horrific plane crash took place, and ALWAYS remembered the man who passed the rescue line to other survivors. This video finally gave him a face and a name. Arlen is a saint today.

@whitethronebooks yeah but that's still not enough! They are so unique and awesomely great humans... Hard to describe how great they are... Imagine a world where everyone would handle situations like this!

That Helicopter Pilot should have got a medal the size of a Bus Hubcap. Amazing him and his crew
cpnstav 3 years ago 22
@cpnstav Yes they should of...and they were not exactly prepared or qualified for such a rescue...they just "winged" it and did a great job.
mulder1021 1 year ago
@cpnstav The helicopter pilot and his partner were each awarded U.S. Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medals for their actions.
