this is what allowed sollozzo to order the hit on the don. santino gave away that there was a split in the family with regards to narcotics. sollozzo could kill the don and simply state it was business as he was the only thing preventing sollozzo and tattaglias from starting up their narcotics industry. a war started by the corleones would scar them forever as business for all other families would suffer. they would have to give in and make a deal to prevent war and keep themselves in business.

Sonny's faux pas creates the story line to the movie. His slip tells Sollozzo that there's a disagreement in the family. Sollozzo tries to knock off the Don in the hopes of dealing w/ Sonny. The plot fails and Michael ultimately bumps off Sollozzo as revenge for the attack on his father. Michael becomes the Godfather and 2 sequels follow.

@lordvoldemort578 Lotta times, ppl left behind have to go along for the ride. Solozzo had the Tatagglia (sp?) and more important, the Barzini Families behind him. Cuneo and Stracci would ally themselves with Barzini, simply because it would be in their families best interest.

Thatd leave the Corleones isolated. Other families would start cutting into their bookmaking, loansharking, stolen goods, etc. Barzini would likely agree to back off in exchange for favors, Corlones would have no choice.

@StuUngar Yeah I Agree, Cuneo and Stracci were two Families that weren't as Powerful as the Corleone's or Barzini families but it was still In There best interest to go along with the Drug business, The Tatagglia family was the weakest family so going into drugs would gain them some Power and Allies. If you read the Book Other families were Killing Corleone Longshore man, Bookmakers, and Loan sharks and In retaliation Sonny went to the Mattresses and Killed alot of the other families members.
