Ah... that's better. Needed to listen to this and to Frantz and London sing Wotan after hearing the recent Met production. Terfel is NOT a Wotan... or even close. My favorite remains London, but no complaints for the beautiful and elegant singing from Schorr!
Ahhhh, Wagner SUNG in a Bel Canto fashion as the composer intended, and the conducting is not pompous, overblown, or staid! Opera is dead, and no amount of cute boys with six packs or wild stage directors with crazy ideas will save it.
@billyguns2 Umm.........and which cute boys with six packs and wild stage directors are you talking about? This isn't exactly Broadway trash, you realize.
@Purplecatsoup30 I'm afraid that there is often more artistic integrity seen on Broadway today than in the opera houses. Three examples: the scandalous, all-nude opening scene and Euro-trash production RIGOLETTO at Covent Garden; the "Planet of the Apes" RIGOLETTO; and atie between the Stuttgart MADAMA BUTTERFLY taking place in a brothel with Pinkerton running around in nothing but tight black leather pants and Butterfly killing the child at the end and the City Opera whorehouse TRAVIATA.
As much as I loove the Furtwangler Ring of 1953, this is probably just as good. Schorr and Frantz are dead even, but this Loge--Henke--beats Windgassen for sure. The 20s may have been the real Golden Age of Wagnerian singing.
Schorr's entry at 1.38 brings as eloquent a piece of singing as you'll ever hear. At age 39 he was at his peak. This is one of the best mementos of a great Wotan. Thanks to thehappymonkey for making it available so successfully! - John Austin, Australia
Thanks for the comment gundhari. (my German is far from perfect so I'll reply in English) I agree, his voice had so many qualities that made him an ideal Wotan.
Perhaps the best memento of Friedrich Schorr. Many thanks, thehappy monkey, for allowing me to hear it again. - John Austin, Ausralia

Schorr is magnificent. The Froh sings gorgeously also.
