is it just coincedence that vai is obssessed w/ number 7--and your name is markus777 ? steve, please stop using brilliance of spanish fly to promote your own crap...how much longer are u going to use eddie's old stuff as a catalyst to your own pathetic career? like the transcription, but eddie does version of spanish fly on fair warning tour that u would have no chance with :) this guy markus is good, however...really like the transcription by you as well as playing by him...
vai once said that if it weren't for hendrix and his use of feedback while playing electric guitar, that everyone who came after him would still just be playing acoustic guitar...well, if that's true, intro. to stairway to heaven and spanish fly would be two most popular solo's i.m.o., and maybe "sisters" by steve would be up there, as well...
eddie's original electric guitar version of spanish fly ( live '79 tour ) is 10x better ( AND faster ) than vai's version...he also does a variation of spanish fly on fair-warning tour that vai would have NO chance of transcribing because it's too hard even for him ( big compliment for eddie if even vai struggles )...
where would steve vai be w/o eddie ? i saw a video concert of his ( steve's ) that dates around early 2,000's, and that's pretty much all he did the entire concert...i had to finally turn it off because i was experiencing an overload of two-handed tapping...
Ya, well, I guess Steve had a talent for survival: give em what they want to hear from a guitar star. However, way too much is made of "shredding" (gets monotonous exercise after awhile) and not enough on just writing a good solid melody/solo with a lot of feel. Flashy speed, tapping etc, gets tiring after a short while. Then, what? Melodies are timeless. Creativity. Guitarist don't listen to other musicians. What about finger picking? What about chordal explorations?
@markus777 steve has said himself he's not a "shredder"...i personally think he kinda sounds more like randy rhoades w/eddie's two-hand techniques thrown in ( to an extreme )...steve's one of the better rock guitarists ever ( definitely in top 10 of all time ), eventhough his tone and overall songwriting leave something to be desired...brilliant technique is his forte', i.m.o...just listen to p. and warfare...b.t.w.--rhoades sound and tone wasn't the best, either ( at least on lead guitar )...
There would be LOTS of settings to describe that sound. Let me first try and find the online filename of the preset and you can just download it onto your rig: must be PODXT or higher, however. Or, just gimme your email and I will TRY and send it to you--if I can find it again.
Hmmmm. Guitar Player magazine about 15 years ago! I'll have to look it up. Even if you did get ahold of it. You'd still have to interpret it and have a LOT of technique to pull it in Eddie's inimitable style. Might as well just work with the CD and you're own take on it.
Epiphone actually. Same thing, some say. All genuine Gibson parts but assembled in the original Gibson factory (only difference is the headstock corners), Epiphone. I replaced the knobs with "LP 1974" style ones.
I honestly don't remember which transcription (maybe Guitar Player magazine? Ida know). Ya gotta understand that when I was learning this, it was on vinyl (not just leaning on Steve Vai)! 16 speed, 1 octave lower than usual. CD doesn't quite give the same effect because digital is terraced and discreet data instead of like smooth analog. I learned alot of songs that way.
It been awhile but I think it's just standard tuning--otherwise, it would likely be tuned down a minor 2nd:
6 5 4 3 2 1
Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb
I'm writing this in Starbucks (LOL) so I can't grab my guitar and compare it to the original recording. But, it seems to me that he tuned his guitar down 1 half step for this. Still, I might be wrong.
Hours and hours of referring to Steve Vai's transcription and working with LP's at 16 speed (leaving everything at an octave lower than normal). I don't claim it to be the best or anything but it's just a version I do. Thanks for you interest.
I agree. However, when I recorded this, I had a crappy classical to use and they simply don't sound good in a home studio environment. When I rented a Ramirez, the recorded tone of that guitar was like night and day. I just basically have to borrow a camera again and record the audio separately. I've played the piece on nylon string for years. I will re-record it for all those purists (just to make my point)--when I get around to it.
The idea was to hear it on electric with the "Eruption" style sound so that the hammer-ons parts sound as intense as Eruption, not like say 50's Dwayne Eddie. I was borrowing a camera and I just did three of them real quick on the spot:
ah, just an Epiphone...LOL...some day soon a Gibson. The parts are all Gibson parts, just assembled in Epiphone factory--the original factory, I'm told.

Epiphone. They're pretty solid guitars. (Gibson parts
assembled in Epiphone factory, Gibson's first factory).
I will get a Gibson Les Paul but not until I like that particular
guitar: like Epiphone, you get some good ones and then
you get really great ones.
