  • How are you getting that much gain out of an 18 watter to do that VanHalen stuff from :37 to :48 with the volume that low? ...or, are you just that good?

  • @ByrdWhiteMovie > That's just how that amp was. It had pretty good front-end gain. Especially... Channel 2, I believe it was, would break up pretty early.

  • @882952 I had Nik build me a JTM45/100 clone and the thing rocks. We're talkin' Hendrix all afternoon. I'm going to have to look into one of these, next. Would be perfect for small gigs, and having that much gain on tap would be a big bonus.

  • @882952 ...oh, and is that master PPIMV or a regular Master?

  • That is some pretty impressive guitar work. My husband was extremely impressed. Was that Cliffs of Dover I heard somewhere in there?

  • WHY WON'T EDDIE MAKE AN AMP WITH MARSHALL?!?!?!?!

  • @jhop5150 - Well you'd think that would be a natural pairing for an amp with an early EVH voicing. But by the time Ed got with Peavey, he was all into high-gain amps as they were more conducive to the techniques he was developing, (tapped harmonics, etc.). But still, I'd love if he did!

  • @882952 It would be so sweet. He should really go back to the sound that got his band famous, if you ask me. There's just this Marshall quality that creates the brown sound I think, like the amp sounds old and has so much character. I love the 5150s, but they sound all studio polished and modern. Most of VH's sound was in the fact that Eddie tried to make an old amp sound new, not a new amp sound perfect.

  • @jhop5150 RE: 'He should really go back to the sound that got his band famous' - Yes, I agree. I tell ya, no one I know is sitting around trying to cop his tone from the later albums. No, everyone's spending thousands trying to build plexis that recreate his _original_ tone. THAT's where the money is, Eddie! I love 5150s too, but to me they're not a "brown sound" amp at all, they're all cold and stiff and compressed. Perfect for metal, but they sound nothing like a cranked, worn-out plexi

  • @882952

He doesn't even use peaveys anymore, he uses fenders.

  • @KevinSaale - Yep, and give the ol' boy another few yeras, and he'll be on with somone else yet. =)

  • @882952 - I just bought this amp a few weeks ago and the guy I got it from said he got it from you. The funny thing, your video is what got me interested in this model in the first place! Never thought I'd be buying that exact amp, small world! Unfortunately it just burned out and Im trying to figure out what happened. How long ago did you buy it from Nik? Any chance you have any of the paperwork so I can send it in for warrant work? Thanks. Paul

  • Oh no - I'm sorry it broke on you - Ceriatone amps are considered to be pretty reliable, (as are plexi/superleads in general, just due to their simplicity I think). Nonetheless, there it is. I'm sorry, I don't have any papers on it, as I myself bought it from the original owner. I will email you directly and see if I can offer some suggestions to try.

  • @pedecamp valves?

  • @johnbeloe - The power transformer went. Turns out theres a flaw in the design that can blow the power transformer or rectifier. Nik is sending me the parts to fix the flaw and a replacement power transformer.

  • is this the head cab from Ceriatone or is it a different one? The one pictured on Ceriatone's website doesn't look like this one.

  • @rockfreak611 - Yep, it's a Ceriatone 18w / 36w. It's not the EF86 model though, whatever that is.

  • Were you using a soaker? I have the original Ceriatone prototype with a few mods I requested to Nik, if I put that master above 3 it's gonna destroy the windows! I gig small clubs at 2 lol.

This is a great amp, can't say enough about it. I have a Ceriatone Silver Jubilee and a Superlead, but this one is ma bebeeeh :D

  • No, no power soak or attenuator used here. I really should have one but I've just never gotten roudn to buying one! Still researching which ones are the best - looks like a lot of people dig the Weber mass units. By the way, I have a Weber 6M45P (50W plexi model 1987 clone). It's very rich and sweet. Get the low-headroom output tranny and it breaks up very early and grinds hard. Mmmmm...

  • I'm considering this amp. How do you think this amp compares to the Ceriatone 2204? I'm looking for a searing dirty overdive that can sound good at bedroom volumes.

Also, where did you get the head cab from? It doesn't look like the one Ceriatone makes.

  • @rockfreak611 - Sorry, I haven't been able to play a 2204, so I can't really compare the two for you. As far as "bedroom levels"... well 18W is still pretty loud, so if you mean living-with-your-parents bedroom levels, no this will be too loud. =)

  • well that kind of dissapoints me. I would've thought that the 36/18W would've been very suitable for bedroom levels up to medium club gigs.

  • Oh yes, certainly fine for medium club gigs. In fact my pal borrowed it, played it in a club, and brought it back telling me how loud it was, and then I noticed he had left it on low power the whole time, (18W). So it sounds like to you, bedroom level is not really "quiet"... in that case, yes, I think you'd be happy.

  • hah thanks

  • Oh and I forgot to answer about the cabinet; it's a crate 4x12 that I loaded with 2x Celestion G12M reissues and 2X Celestion G12H Heritage series. I don't remember which type I had the mic on, sorry.

  • @EVTMods - Glad you like it. This was recorded with no mods, no pedals. The amp was in stock as-sold condition. The preamp tubes were RCA long blackplates and power tubes were JJ.

  • Sorry, it sold months ago. I just leave my vids up here for people who (like myself) enjoy hearing examples of other types of amps that they don't yet own themselves, or want to compare with ones they do own, etc. =)

  • ok, = D

  • wow it sounds good, r u still selling it?
