I really enjoy your rendition of this wonderful piece. Your tempi allow the music to be felt at the most intimate level which I feel was the intention of the composer. While I do admit I admire Heiftetz for so many reasons, don't you feel his tempo is far too fast for the music ? Also, what instrument are you playing? You sound like you truly enjoy coaxing the tone from it and bringing the music to life.
I would be so happy, if you could come to the Czech republic - Prague and perform for me and many other classical music lovers...your playing is just wonderful...Ive always loved the sound of violin, but you make it sound even better! Please come, you wont regret it, Prague is beautiful!
I'm not really sure how to ask this question but what are the notes starting from 1:01 to 1:13? I dont really read music but I would like to know. I love your interpretation by the way.
There's a tiny bit of muddiness here and there, especially where it's quick. I thought at first it was the recording, but listening closer, it does actually sound like it's the tiniest bit of sloppiness in technique, notably when switching strings.
I really liked the personal flavoring in the 7:00-7:45 section. In fact, I liked the choices you made in many parts of it. Particularly lovely with the harmonics too.
It's still phenomenally good though. The best violin piece in history IMHO.

This concerto was not well received at all when it premiered. One critic was reported to say that the concerto was so bad, that it reminded him of the breath of a drunk, ie, "it stinks in the ear!" Tchaikivsky was so disturbed by the reviews that he never wrote another violin concerto in his lifetime. I wonder what that person would say if he knew it became one of the most famous violin concertos ever written? I thinks Pyotr was way ahead of his time with this one, he could have been a rock star
I find it amazing that a seemingly simple instrument can turn out sounds that are so beautifully complex and unlike any others heard by our ears. Your playing is exquisite!

Wow. Such an original interpretation. I bet it was hard to stray from the expected and still make it sound like it's the standard way of playing it. Loved it!
@surfboy , I have to admit that I have my own ideas about a few pieces of music :). Not everyone always approves, but there you go! I'm glad you enjoyed it!!! :)
Your playing of this concerto reminds me of the 1957 recording of Ida Haendel with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Eugene Goossens, to my mind the finest recording of this concerto ever published. Haendel's version is sadly no longer available but your recording is an admirable substitute,
hello. reading these comments it seems that Heifetz, is the one to be! don't know much about music.. but I'll stick with perlman.. probably they are the same person.... btw Miss Anna.... sei terribilmente sensuale.
Wow, Ann! This is your favorite violin concerto? Sounds like it is. :) Fantastic! My favorite's always changing. At first it was the Mendelssohn, then the Bruch, but lately the Sibelius and especially the Beethoven have been sticking out to me, but they're all such gems. I couldn't like any one more than the other. Do you have a favorite cello concerto? Mine's the Elgar and Dvorak. :)
You don't sound exactly like Heifetz, but you are a credit to him in that your playing certainly bears his influence. You play with a crisp tone and a vibrato that purrs. I like that. Your playing is technically very clear and precise. I hear the best of many great violinists in your playing, particularly of the Russian school. The most difficult aspect of this concerto heretofore is that while it was once dubbed impossible to play, it has now become over played. Yours, however, is unique.
@unclejuniorsoprano, Thank you so much! I suppose that like La Ronde Lutins, once it got the reputation for being "unplayable", everyone needed to prove that they could do it! :)
@Annfontanella I've listened to this recording at least 10 times & continue to hear passages of sheer genius. It's as though you've adapted a playing style from greats such as Heifetz, Oistrakh, & Kogan yet you play with individuality. Such a powerful, legato bow. You play this piece as though you were Russian, with prowess & finesse. And you seem to convey the Georgian spirit as is embedded in this work. I will not compare you with contemporary violinists, as you are at the top of the heap.

I heard this for the first time, totally by chance, flipping through stations on the radio. It absolutely floored me. I had never listened to classical before. I got chills, tears in my eyes and could barely drive. Because of this concerto I've been obsessed ever since:)
Nice job Ann! Thanks for sharing this. Definitely. especially in the 1st movement. We had our 1st read last night without the soloist. I give props to our conductor for singing the entire solo part as he was conducting. A funny side note. We are using borrowed music and someone wrote "Fake" next to the fast sixteenth note passage towards the end of the last movement :)
Thanks, Blue! :) I was a bit of an obsessive compulsive child. Pretty much once I got my violin, I wouldn't put it down - and if you said I couldn't do something.......!!!! :) :)
Guitar, contemporary classical or contemporary pop? I have a hard time keeping atonality down - it doesn't really agree with my system, LOL. I tend to prefer music that is more romanticized, like Korngold, Waxman, etc. Moviemusic is really what it boils down to, post 1920 or so. In terms of pop music...well, I like some of it very much :).
I've been listening/watching your videos pretty much since you put them up and I always come back. It's like listening to Heifetz but without all the pop and hiss. I really enjoy them!
I thought I should leave a comment in case you get too famous to get to write back :D
LOL, Mauri! I love popping on youtube just because there are so many nice people here! Thank you so much for the kind words. I read once that Heifetz used to insist on having the mic right on top of him - I wouldn't be surprised if he had been frustrated by recording technology of his time, too....
Prego. As a fan of classical music but a child of pop and jazz, I find the vibrato of some orchestral players a bit excessive (broad) and "shakey" at times. The perfect vibrato is a cross between Sinatra's long tones and Clapton's bends. lol Anyway, I appreciated your more "modern" approach to it . Kudos to you and Mr. Friedman : )
Plangent, oh, I'd never fault Sinatra. I'm actually shopping around right now for holiday music, and I'm pulling together a mix of Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sinatra for my stereo :).I've been wanting to break out some of my Miles Davis (like his earlier stuff), but my fiancee isn't crazy about it, soo...:) And Thanks very much for the kind words!
Suggested best Miles Davis -- 'Round Midnight, Nefertiti and Mile's Smiles.
Suggested Sinatra-- Only the Lonely. (Nelson Riddle's orchestration is AMAZING!) Come Dance With Me. My Cole Porter.
And I agree with your comments on atonality. It's okay as an accent, but not as a flavor. In my "younger years" I thought I was so sophisticated because I listened to Stockhausan and Varese. Now, I prefer Rachmaninoff , Beethoven, and the Beatles. : )

Thanks, Blue! :) I was a bit of an obsessive compulsive child. Pretty much once I got my violin, I wouldn't put it down - and if you said I couldn't do something.......!!!! :) :)

Isn't this a brilliant concerto, Olefchansa?! It's so tuneful - the only other that is perhaps so beautiful is the Beethoven, I think.

Aneves, Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I've been listening/watching your videos pretty much since you put them up and I always come back. It's like listening to Heifetz but without all the pop and hiss. I really enjoy them!
I thought I should leave a comment in case you get too famous to get to write back :D
Mauri824 2 years ago
LOL, Mauri! I love popping on youtube just because there are so many nice people here! Thank you so much for the kind words. I read once that Heifetz used to insist on having the mic right on top of him - I wouldn't be surprised if he had been frustrated by recording technology of his time, too....

Thanks for your playing:) You make a rainy learning day less cruel:)

Kossi, I hate rainy days, too!! All I want to do is sleeeep on them! :) And thank you for listening in and dropping me a line!

Magnificent. I love the fact that your vibrato is smooth. That takes pinpoint intonation.
plangentmusic 2 years ago
Thanks, plagentmusic. I do work a lot on vibrato. Mr. Friedman (my former teacher) would get really mad if anything was out of tune or sloppy!
Annfontanella 2 years ago
Friedman : )
plangentmusic 2 years ago
Plangent, oh, I'd never fault Sinatra. I'm actually shopping around right now for holiday music, and I'm pulling together a mix of Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sinatra for my stereo :).I've been wanting to break out some of my Miles Davis (like his earlier stuff), but my fiancee isn't crazy about it, soo...:) And Thanks very much for the kind words!
Annfontanella 2 years ago
Suggested best Miles Davis -- 'Round Midnight, Nefertiti and Mile's Smiles.
Suggested Sinatra-- Only the Lonely. (Nelson Riddle's orchestration is AMAZING!) Come Dance With Me. My Cole Porter.
And I agree with your comments on atonality. It's okay as an accent, but not as a flavor. In my "younger years" I thought I was so sophisticated because I listened to Stockhausan and Varese. Now, I prefer Rachmaninoff , Beethoven, and the Beatles. : )
