i just got a used in very good shape except for the covering whice i thought my hot ir gun would take right out but i couldnt get them all out. thinking about stripping it and trying my hand at a covering job
The servos you put in for the flaps are exactly the way the instuctions say to do it... I like my plane better with flaps... My Dad was taxi-ing and ran into my plane, so I bought a ARF and put everything inside... The new landing gear is brilliant... It has much softer landings
if you're not new to flying glow/glas, etc or anything that is made of balsa with covering it's completely normal. i use a hangar 9 sealing iron or you can use a heat gun
yeah i just iron my self, but i need a heat gun now, because im about to build my first ,, rc plane kit,,So i believe the gun will come in very handy as well as the iron in some situtations
hi great vid.. great channel...just started my build on the p-51 d from nitro planes.com so far so good...mine has some wrinkles in the monocote as well...thx for the tip....kev
@hairlesshippy I went with the S -52 a ASP my kit came with no flaps I thought when I got more exp. flyin I would set it up as a mod to the plane....I liked how yours went doin the mod on your plane good ideas. thx
just be careful not to overheat or over shrink the material other wise you could end up warping the surfaces and wing panels. Me personally I would use an iron at a low setting.
I have the same rig. I had a considerable number of wrinkles but not quite as many as yours. Heat gun specifically designed for covering worked well - it's a slow process though (took me about 45 minutes to do the whole plane). I went too fast (actually too slow) on one wing and shrank the edge of the covering on one of the stripes. On the sheeted parts (fuselage especially), used a variable temp covering iron with a sock. But before I did any work on the Ultracote, I read up on it. I also made
use a hot air gun, but be careful if you hold it in one spot to long will burn hole. Keep gun in motion. I used a iron on mine and turn the temp up to about 3/4 to full! Worked great for me.
@rlhjvh thanks for the post. I left my heat gun in one spot too long and it pulled it back a little too far.. ehh.. it was my first time.. no biggie.. This is become one of my favorite planes to fly.. great flying characteristics..
Great plane, have the same with a few simple mods. Have you upgraded your engne yet. Mine is flying with an OS .55AX with a two blade 11 x 7 prop. Now it flies even better.
Hi there.. I have not removed the droops and still have the stock motor. I put an 11X7 on that stock motor and seems to really hum for me.. not sure I want to upgrade.. I did however get a heat gun and iron and after applying the heat, most of the bubbles and wrinkles went away!! I have to ask.. Is there really a MAJOR increase in performance after installing the .55AX? I just can't validate upgrading the engine.. Would rather use the money on something else. Thanks for posting!!
Hairlesshippy, I like your name. I have removed the droops, and using TT's 11X7.7 Prop. I know it's lil bigger size prop for some people per se, but that baby flew so good without drops and 2 bladed prop. Also my flaps were in neutral/ flushed position so I did rolls, cuban 8, and it gave me good vertical as well. This baby flies so good. People have added O.S. 55AX and then this plane turns into a great fast flying speedy plane. Just like Britons replaced the engine with RR Merlins in WWII.
I hope I don't offend anyone with this statement, but it looks like your aircraft is painted in the squadron colors of he Tuskeegee Airmen. So I was thinking that it might be fitting to modify the features of the pilot to reflect this fact. Gorgeous airplane and good luck with the bubbles.
I looked up Tuskeegee Airmen and you are right.. it looks very much like them.. I wonder how to dress up pilot to reflect. I would be willing to do it if you gave me some suggestions of what I can do.. Thanks for commenting!!
Well, reality is, the only thing you can do is try to paint the pilot to look like an African American. Or maybe search for another pilot figure that already suits your needs. If you do this it might be interesting to find out how many people catch on to the significance. Good luck. I think it would look great and be historically accurate.
It's a great plane, and flies so beautifully, it's more better than previous mustang pts, I own it and I love it. Yes I did have the same bubble problem. And what temperature should the iron be, I mean the knob with numbers between 1 to 6 is it 2 or lil less? I have seen the white sticker behind the prop, scrape it off as I was told it creates a lil problem in prop balancing. This plane flies good and I love it.
I can't wait to get it in the air.. maybe this weekend as I flew my first gas plane this past saturday and should get signed off to fly single on Friday.. Did you take the droops off the wings yet? how much different is it without them? Thanks for commenting!!
Hi, this plane flew first time out of the box, very little trim needed, engine started first flick,is very stable and slow with the flaps down ,nice and easy slow landing, for the money a bargain and easy to fly.
i have a question no one has anwser yet so plz some one i want to get this p-51 it will be my first glow power plane but i have flown for 2 years i am 23 yrs old and i have theses planes F27 striker// supercub// micro p-51 all electric but i fly them verry well do you think i would have a problem flying this one? i am just intemidated because it is bigger and more exspensive lol but in all honesty what do you guys think ??
Hi i have the same model and the same problems, with the covering and have used a iron,my wifes household iron set at middle temp, try at low and turn up bit by bit untill right temp mines as smooth as silk now.
I bought the plane 2 months ago from horizon hobby but through amazon. i don't think I have the option to return it anymore. I am going to buy an iron and heat gun and try to fix it myself. The servo doors are their for the flaps, you just unscrew. fairly easy mod.
it was a defective thing every P-51 is like that and cannot be totally elimenated.

Simple heat will fix, not a defect. My P51 looked the same, heat gun!
ricksteffey123 10 months ago
Its not a deffective issue. It's the different climate in the different climate regions that causes the foil to shring and expand.

@crazyRCplane yea.. I agree now. a little heat took the wrinkles right out.. Thanks for commenting.
