Sounded more like just attempting something different. I don't see why artists need to play every song note for note the exact same way. If he did fuck up he did the right thing and ran with it.
I play live and find it very hard to play when in complete darkness as has happened to me a few times. Oh well, that is the beauty of live performance is that if you went to that concert you probably wouldn't even remember any of the band's mistakes because (after all) they are human.
I honestly dot consider this a screw-up at all, he obviouysly tried something new just to se how it sounded, and imo it fit pretty well, it gave the solo that even more" trippy" feeling you get from listening to "Thrid Eye"
What I think is funny is that so many people are totally overreacting to this video. It's not like Tamagod is going "HAHAHAH look at the dumb bastard" He's just showing the truth. I think its not 100% a mess up, but from a perspective, the line was played quite sloppily.
@ziltiod94 Thats just fanboys for ya, but your right. If he titled the video "Adam jones fucks up because he cant play for shit and sucks goat balls un fried " then I could see some anger arising, but even then you dont have to act like Tamagod killed Adam. Fans will be fans i guess
Tamagod.... why would you possibly care that he messed up! WE are all human you know. AND for all you know the technology behind his sound may have been at fault as well! this is stupid!
I can tell you from experience, he probably can't see what the F he's doing in that light. The slow rise to the notes is him figuring hill hit it eventually :)
WHEN YOU PLAY HUNDREDS OF SHOWS AND GO ON TOUR FOR MONTHS AT A TIME YOUR GONNA MISS A FRET OR PLAY A WRONG NOTE, UNLESS YOUR GOD. IT HAPPENS TO THE BEST OF THEM AND THEY KEEP PLAYING.
Whoever posted this isn't a Tool fan. Go back to listening to your Justin Bieber, technologically enhanced to perfection machine-corrected, auto-tuned, sound.
I'll stick with my real music, which is made by imperfect humans.
I've seen the full length of this video and I never thought it was much of a mistake. I had the feeling that it wasn't what Jones originally intended to do but its it isn't what I would call a fuck up. A fuck up would have been if it would have been clearly noticeable that he got mad at himself and done something else with his arms. But he just kept going. Thats the difference between a small mistake and a fuck up. JUST KEEP GOING AND FEW WILL NOTICE.
He's so good that his Slip sound's Purely like musical genius how about that. I saw adam and every fucking note he plays nearly made my heart explode.
What mess up? Most guitarists play different live then in the studio. If he DID mess up, he kept pace with the song perfectly and fixed it perfectly. Adam Jones is one of the best guitarts that has ever lived. Oh and by the way, it was a "solo". You are allowed to change a solo up from time to time...
@3800intrigue Dude anyone could hear that that is a mess up. No point in protecting this, your argument kinda fails as I think he would admit it himself. And by the way, who cares if he messed up like 8 seconds in a solo 10 years ago?
I'm always in awe when I see things like this happen. I know "Third Eye" is a ridiculously long and complex tune, but it's like...how many times he has to have played it over the years, and to completely loose it like this, makes no sense to me whatsoever.
@revolutionday1 Wow, you are really mature. I congradulate you on your ability to be kind, especially to a stranger, who you have never even seen before.
@yyyuuuguppy Yeah, pretty-sure it's "congratulate". As well, why would I give a flying fuck about you as I have "never even seen" you before?? You want a cookie, or...a back-rub, or....??
yeah no matter how much you play or practice anytime you play live shit happens. christ, you have to play for 2 hours, and anything can be going through your head the lights can fuck you up too. especially Tool's lighting...
All of you need to listen to the song from start to finish. This isnt a mess up its how he actually plays it. Give it a listen if you dont believe me..
If a "band" such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. had Adam Jones as their guitarist, they would have a 25% better chance of becoming close to as great as Tool is.
I have listened to the live version many many times, and this is categorically not 'exactly how it goes'. Tool are my favourite band but people need to deal with the fact that they make mistakes as well - there's a video of Carey dropping his stick. Big deal, he still nails it. They're only human and everyone is far too easily bated when it comes to their mistakes.
there's no such thing as a ADAM JONES mess up! That's a Fact! The only mistake here is the title of the video. The title to this video should be: GOD SIGHTINGS!!
its funny that you said that because in a tool magazine i have it says that alex grey doesnt recall adam ever taking drugs, and if he did it was a long time ago
i'm sure that Alex Grey, omniscient though he may be, didn't spend ever waking second with Adam in tow. keep in mind that these people are both active artists. Alex has taken his share of hallucinogens, my share of hallucinogens, and your share of hallucinogens. probably in more countries than you or i will ever see and is still breaking through to this day.
You can look at this 2 ways..it was a bonafide mistake or it was intentional..the use of chromaticism at the rite time can stimulate the musical mind especially when it's expecting to hear it in a certain way..just bc it's different doesn't mean it was wrong..and if it is a genuine mistake u have to admire the recovery...the mark of a good musician isn't that they never mess up but how they handle it when they do..either way you look at it shouldn't be negative..
Zerotolerance88 It does matter, I agree. Go watch the millions of other guys that "Shred" If you like that, But these guys know how to make music that is Good and will last long after there gone..
nah it's a bonafied mistake. They make mistakes ALL - THE - TIME. almost everytime I've seen them in fact. did you guys think they weren't human or something?
who cares? adam's a great guitarist. people don't really give him enough credit in ways. because he doesn't ''shred'' by playing as many notes as possible as fast as he can. he's a textural guitarist. not like my comment even matters though...
your comment matters to me, and i agree with you, tool is a much more technical and artistic band than others. Adam may not "shred" but the he uses his guitar and the unique sounds he can create is in my mind, just as good and any metal solo, maybe even better
My question is this.... Who has such an amazing quality recording of a live Tool song and chooses only to put the slight mistake Adam Jones made here but nothing else? I am much more interested in hearing the whole song with maybe a side not of his slip, but in reality, its not a big deal at all, because he may not play super fast in most songs, but creating what he does takes more imagination and creativity than most guitarist could dream of having, myself included at the moment.
@creditordebitsir i was thinking exactly the same!!the quality of the sound actually makes me want to hear the entire song!!who cares about the little mistake post the hole song!!!
anyways yeah,i honestly think he is probably way better of a guitarist than people think he is.i bet if he really wanted he could play in a band that has run of the mill solos, riffs, etc.but the people here comparing him to hendrix and vai are just fucking stupid..
that's what i like about adam.he has his own sound coming from a brilliant set up that no one else has,and ever will have.
who gives a fuck if he doesn't use all these crazy ass hendrix like solos? TOOL is NOT about shit like that.and did anyone ever consider that maybe all of the guys in the band decided to weed solos like that and other things cause fucking every other band was using them? they probably did.i guarantee adam doesn't even show all of his skill in TOOL songs.
Yea a slight mistake...obviously it happens to the best of em'...He was improvising off of the mistake...good save Adam. Plus its prog rock...half the song is improv anyways.
As a musician who has seen TOOL live several times this is definitely not a mistake, in my opinion. A common theme in Adam's improvisions seems to be dissonance in some form or another, which could easily lead a layman into believing he made a mistake. It doesn't sound like it "fits," but that is how it sounds everytime I've heard him improv.
Neither do i. Then again next time your out on the street, take a look to your left, then look right. Chances are you've probably just seen about 25 - 50 dimwitted dumbfucks who just dont get it. These people are the same folk who cant understand loose phrasing. FFS Its ADAM JONES. He's an inspiration to many, and because of that people wanna cut him down. Those are the ppl you see to the left n right of you on the street.
thats not a mistake. thats just playin it live, you can see him working it more slowly, the ppl who really know the song, hear that and it gives them a new feel for it.
Woops, just realized that might make it look like i was dissing off Adam Jones, but i would never do that. He's my favourite guitarist of all time and i meant that in a good way.
I love reading comments on Tool vids. Arguments galore. A great way to pass the time at work. Did he make a mistake? Probably. Big deal? Not to me, and probably not to Adam. Is Adam the greatest guitar player to ever walk the Earth? I would say not.. but is he my personal favorite? Sure thing. If it's not the technicality, it's something else. Can't put my finger on it but he certainly sounds good. Just my two cents, which someone will most likely tell me I should've kept to myself :)
ahh man, another adam jones conversation. the man himself has stated he is more an artist than a musician, but clearly he is an amazing musician. sure what he plays is easy to reproduce, but i would like to see anyone else sit in a room with those 3 guys and write something better
Mistake? I disagree. Improvisation is what I'll call it. It still sounds awesome. Now maynards high was a mistake.
And to address this argument bellow me:
Adam Jones sounds awesome. Certainly perhaps not the most talented guitarist out there but my favourite. I challenge you to improve the guitar in any Tool song. I wouldn't change a note.
The point is he can play wicked sounding music which is more than can be said of many supposedly more talented rock "gods".
*APPLAUSE* Thank you loincloth! Hey guys, just because it sounds cool doesn't mean its as intricate as it sounds! Adam works for Tool, his creativity is far better than his playability. Like what loin said, its in drop d, with an ample amount of delay, echo, distortion, and whatever else his foot can stomp, or his fingers can turn! In short, Adam is an effect guru, but not a solo, tapping, dive bombing, guitar god!
I sparked an outrage. All I am pointing out is that he is technically limited, and his prowess consists of hammer-on triplets at its apex. Of course, I consider myself a Tool fan, and his riffs do sound cool. Then again, I could fart in a mic and put mad delay and distortion on it and have you guys stunned. He's a drop-D, flat finger guitarist. Nothing wrong with it. It works for the band. But...put him against Michael Akerfeldt, Petrucci, or Fredrik Åkesson.
wow everybody messes up, even maynard messes up lol, nobodies perfect. anyways if adam jones isn't a great guitar player then why is his music unique? Just because he doesn't "Shred" doesn't mean he cant play, then again everybody has their own opinion
dude are you the guy who played corky in life goes on? adam jones is one of the best fuckin guitarists ever. you obviusly have never heard lateralus, ticks and leeches, no quarter,..you dumb fuck..i'd slap you for sayin that if i could
Adam Jones is absolutely one of my favorite guitarists because of his creativity, but really, he's not one of the "best fuckin guitarists ever" if you're talking about his skills as a guitarist. I honestly agree with loincloth. If you really think he's that amazing, listen to Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, and Stevie Ray Vaughn just as starting points.
so you do not think that creativity is a skill? anyone can play scales... true art, skill, and musical honesty are directly related to innovation. that being said, everyone is entitled to have a valid opinion (i still think loincloth's a pole smoker though).
well i dont wanna split hairs here but those generic fuckers are has beens and worm feasts. TOOL cant even have a show anywhere with out it selling out so that kinda speaks for it's self there pal. listen to the guitar solos on 46 and 2, no quarter, and eulogy. mean no disrespect and your entitled to your opinion..but your opinion be wrong brotha lol
seriously fucktard. If you mean that his stuff isn't hard to play, then that's okay. But to say he's not a great guitarist, come on. The dude's got inspiration coming out of his ass - you think you could come up with a 7-minute song like Vicarious?
So, maybe he isn't an amazing guitar player, but he's one badass musician.
you must be one bad motherfucker on the instrument. i gather this because you deem yourself qualified to rate one of the best modern guitarists (or guitarist period). maybe mr. jones would meet your rigorous demands if he covered an old blue song, like something by howling wolf, or if he did something with van halen flare. seriously, shut the fuck up dumbass
You are an idiot if you think professionals don't mess up. Adam Jones is an amazing guitar player and to scrutanize and professional for not playing something how it is on the album only shows your ignorance of artists in the music industry, give the man a break.
um well you might know him but lol they've sold millions of records and he is a great guitarist all guitarists make mistakes all musicians every single one of em
Sounded more like just attempting something different. I don't see why artists need to play every song note for note the exact same way. If he did fuck up he did the right thing and ran with it.

These people are the same folk who cant understand loose phrasing. FFS Its ADAM JONES. He's an inspiration to many, and because of that people wanna cut him down. Those are the ppl you see to the left n right of you on the street.
thehoffa 2 years ago
thats not a mistake. thats just playin it live, you can see him working it more slowly, the ppl who really know the song, hear that and it gives them a new feel for it.

Woops, just realized that might make it look like i was dissing off Adam Jones, but i would never do that. He's my favourite guitarist of all time and i meant that in a good way.
DasUberCow 3 years ago 2
It didn't sound THAT bad. C'mon, its live, its never going to be the exact same thing.
inevitable408 3 years ago
it's always exactly the same. TOOL has it's standards. although, they are still only human.

Just my two cents, which someone will most likely tell me I should've kept to myself :)

he uses this rare guitar with metallic paint that makes in resonate in that strange sounding way
chamallowbleu 3 years ago
ahh man, another adam jones conversation. the man himself has stated he is more an artist than a musician, but clearly he is an amazing musician. sure what he plays is easy to reproduce, but i would like to see anyone else sit in a room with those 3 guys and write something better
dizzle05243 3 years ago
it sounded fine to me. but if it was a mistake, were ALL human we make mistakes
notyourhomeboy 3 years ago 4
Mistake?
The point is he can play wicked sounding music which is more than can be said of many supposedly more talented rock "gods".

unbelievable..unbelievable...this cannot be happening, i hate this band now
giggitygoo619 3 years ago
*APPLAUSE* Thank you loincloth! Hey guys, just because it sounds cool doesn't mean its as intricate as it sounds! Adam works for Tool, his creativity is far better than his playability. Like what loin said, its in drop d, with an ample amount of delay, echo, distortion, and whatever else his foot can stomp, or his fingers can turn! In short, Adam is an effect guru, but not a solo, tapping, dive bombing, guitar god!
tnic469 3 years ago 3
i hate when people compare guitarists negatively like that, adam jones is damn good and yea hes fuckin human its not a big deal
MuDvAyNw 3 years ago 3
I sparked an outrage. All I am pointing out is that he is technically limited, and his prowess consists of hammer-on triplets at its apex. Of course, I consider myself a Tool fan, and his riffs do sound cool. Then again, I could fart in a mic and put mad delay and distortion on it and have you guys stunned. He's a drop-D, flat finger guitarist. Nothing wrong with it. It works for the band. But...put him against Michael Akerfeldt, Petrucci, or Fredrik Åkesson.
loincloth200 3 years ago
wow everybody messes up, even maynard messes up lol, nobodies perfect. anyways if adam jones isn't a great guitar player then why is his music unique? Just because he doesn't "Shred" doesn't mean he cant play, then again everybody has their own opinion
WhoDeyJester 3 years ago 3
I guess he IS a human being afterall.

haha at least he did a decent job of covering it up and getting back on track...

he's not that great of a guitarist. I'm a tool fan but lets be honest.
loincloth200 3 years ago
dude are you the guy who played corky in life goes on? adam jones is one of the best fuckin guitarists ever. you obviusly have never heard lateralus, ticks and leeches, no quarter,..you dumb fuck..i'd slap you for sayin that if i could
scutter28 3 years ago
Adam Jones is absolutely one of my favorite guitarists because of his creativity, but really, he's not one of the "best fuckin guitarists ever" if you're talking about his skills as a guitarist. I honestly agree with loincloth. If you really think he's that amazing, listen to Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, and Stevie Ray Vaughn just as starting points.
Roldy23 3 years ago
so you do not think that creativity is a skill? anyone can play scales... true art, skill, and musical honesty are directly related to innovation. that being said, everyone is entitled to have a valid opinion (i still think loincloth's a pole smoker though).
goompaw1 3 years ago
well i dont wanna split hairs here but those generic fuckers are has beens and worm feasts. TOOL cant even have a show anywhere with out it selling out so that kinda speaks for it's self there pal. listen to the guitar solos on 46 and 2, no quarter, and eulogy. mean no disrespect and your entitled to your opinion..but your opinion be wrong brotha lol
scutter28 3 years ago
seriously fucktard. If you mean that his stuff isn't hard to play, then that's okay. But to say he's not a great guitarist, come on. The dude's got inspiration coming out of his ass - you think you could come up with a 7-minute song like Vicarious?
So, maybe he isn't an amazing guitar player, but he's one badass musician.
carrerakid360 3 years ago
you must be one bad motherfucker on the instrument. i gather this because you deem yourself qualified to rate one of the best modern guitarists (or guitarist period). maybe mr. jones would meet your rigorous demands if he covered an old blue song, like something by howling wolf, or if he did something with van halen flare. seriously, shut the fuck up dumbass
goompaw1 3 years ago
i wouldnt doubt the guy messed up. still a good guitar player tho!

I thought all of Third Eye was just him "messing up" on guitar anyway.

You are an idiot if you think professionals don't mess up. Adam Jones is an amazing guitar player and to scrutanize and professional for not playing something how it is on the album only shows your ignorance of artists in the music industry, give the man a break.
