Seagulls are great for this kind of shot, they will come right up and hover right up in your face (or lens). It sometimes seems uncanny because usually you are shooting a handcam and the sky seems unnaturally blue and the speed of the wing motion can create a subtle stroboscopic effect that is eerie and cool.

The reason you think it's CG is the bright highlight on the back of the seagulls' wings. The complexity of the movement and the fact that there are subtle differences between each of the gulls suggest that it is real. The lighting issue that you picked out speaks to the accuracy of your eye, but it's possible that the sun was just at the right angle to catch that highlight on the back of the wings, giving it a CG "feel", though it is probably real. To do this in CG would be a waste of time.
