Hello, I have looked at all the methods for recording my guitar and amplifier and so far buying this sound card is the best option. Does this work with the Vox VT 20+ amplifier? and also can you plug your guitar directly into it?
Audiophile 2496 SUCKS! unless you dont use it on a windows7 64bit the damn thing is useless, it crackels on both channels when recording, and also has another issue which sounds like distortion on the left channel, i cant belief M-audio wont help anyone or even confirm the issues it has with windows7 64bit so that people dont go crazy wondering if its the monitors, i'd love to smack m-audio in the face.
Great review, good coverage of the capabilities. Can you just use it as a sound card, and connect your speakers to the analog outs, to get better sound than the PC's internal sound?
@MistaMase102 Balanced is only desirable for long cable runs; for a small home studio setup unbalanced is perfectly adequate, unless you are in the habit of having radio transmission devices sitting next to your system.
This card is a bastard peace of shit waste of money especially when you have to make sure you have the right windows os, then make sure you got the right hardisk that isnt gonna interfere somehow with the recordings which u bought the card for in the 1st place! and then u record with it and you hear crackles and pops and distortion like interference, so then you turn the internet off but still no change what a waste of money it's basically paying for somthing that doesnt work! M-AUDIO I HATE U
@InternalMind If it helps, a lot of that may well be solved if you tried it with ubuntu linux which is actually very easy to use if you try ubuntu studio (or even just wubi.exe). All free so search it. The card should work with no need to install drivers. All software you need is included too & if you have any troubles, there are great forums with most FAQs answered. Software is included on disc. For the midi you'd use rosegarden & for the audio multitrackiing, you'd use ardour (like pro tools).
I got a question.I just bought one of these from a private seller on ebay and unfortunately,I didn't realize that their was a better version with built in preamps and more connections,so I'm stuck with this one.I do have 4 two channel external preamps though. My question is is can I hook up my 32 channel mixing console or my Tascam 2488neo 24 track recorder? Purchasing this card is my first attempt at switching over to PC recording.PS.I also have a two channel active direct box, will this help?
Yo', so is this card any good for actually making music on a computer? I don't need mic or guitar inputs, just making music on a computer. Is there a big difference in a sound quality between Audiophile 2496 and 192? Thanks in advance.
@zealcore As far as quality statistics on paper are concerned, between the Audiophile 2496 and 192, the latter gives an improved overall dynamic range of 109dBA compared with the 100dBA of the 2496. But really they are both excellent and if you were saving a lot of money, then the 2496 is still fantasic. The best advances that most people would notice I think are the inputs and out puts, especially the balanced ones. But as you say, you don't worry about it. If you are sequencing, both are fine.
Can anyone tell me if this card will lower latency in case I DO NOT RECORD but make music using virtual synths, lots of effects and samples? Currently I have AMD 2x2200 MHz and 3 GB RAM...and 120 ms latency (!!!)
@bocskai98 You dont need to upgrade your pc. Sounds like you need to reinstall your operating system. I'd go down that route first if I were you assuming you run winXP. Or if you cant bring yourself to do that install wubi.exe now or in april2012, search "wubi 12.4lts" (a fully fledged free linux operating system named ubuntu). If you install wubi you'll be given an option to choose windows or ubuntu each time you turn on the pc.
Whichever of the 2 routes you choose latency on this card is good.
Nope. OS reinstall isn't the solution since I don't have viruses (there are reasons why). I figured out that low latency was caused because I forgot to enable ASIO4ALL. Now I have latencies as low as 20 ms. A CPU upgrade is necessary because I bought a MIDI controller and I need more precise control while recording and live sessions.
I will not mix DAW software with Linux; I have some bad experiences regarding this. Linux is good for other types of activities that I perform.
@bocskai98 Ahh I see. I didn't figure you were using a DAW control surface. Getting those to work can be a pain. Definitely a weak point in linux. The kernel level ASIO drivers are generally great on windows & linux for latency. 20ms is not bad going.
Viruses don't tend to be the main reason latency these days as most modern viruses are worms. It tends to be old registry entries (& fragmentation of the MFT which you can move to solve on winxp). I suggested reinstall as it solves many things. :)
It didn't solve. Btw: my OS didn't slow down at all in 2 and a half years :) On Windows I do not use peer-to-peer downloading software, nor cracked games/software. It's all freeware or legal software.
Given the complexity of some tracks, it is not sci-fi that I need better CPU. If you check out some FL Studio tutorials, you'll see what I'm talkin' 'bout. Reason, for example, uses much less CPU (but I don't like the UI).
@bocskai98 I take the same approach with software on windows with my machines as you. Wise moves. :)
Processing speed does help with those real time effects, for sure. From your original post I thought you were just having trouble getting something basic going, but now I see you are getting your money's worth out of the hardware by putting it to hard work. That's what I like to hear!
**(continues) this version is not supportd for this windows.. i didnt understand why..coz my windows is 64 bit and m audio driver also 64 bit.. but error.. and i downloadd anothr version and i installed it manually by selecting the driver.. it workd (i mean i could listn to the songs) but when i tryed to open the control pannel.. but microsoft visual C++ runtime library error... :-( :-( when i contacted m-Audio staff.. he said that they are working on it... i wondr why he is sayn it 4 past 3 yrs
@RAYGproductions thanks for the reply... and yea i tried with windows 7 64bit.. and it worked well... but.. i had another problem with some of ther softwares/drivers saying " window has stopped working" i guess i am not lucky.. :-(
@dhruvdheen Try this go to Control Pane\Administrative Tools and open Services and disable Desktop Window Manage..If that does not work then set back to default..Let me know.
@dhruvdheen If you were buying a high quality audio card, then Home Premium or Ultimate would be most appropriate for their media centre playback capabilities, assuming that's what you wanted to do?
its a very good sound card...i was using this on my pc (xp pro sp2 32 bit ddr2 x 2GB)
then i plan to increase my ram speed so i installed 6 GB ram and i know that i cant run more than 4 GB ram on 32 bit os.. so i changed to 64 bit.. and i was happy that gonna work in high speed.. but eveything changed and i felt like somebody pushed me from the hills..coz thare is no any 2496 drive for 64bit os.. i found the 64 bit driver in m audio site.. but no use..coz thr was a mesge says this version not**
@dhruvdheen Seriously, give "ubuntustudio 12.4lts" a try when it is released just after april 2012. It is free & you can install it alongside your windows operating system. I advise you wait for the 12.4 lts version because it's "Long Term Support" which for a new user means it wont change much for 2 years. Easy! Just accept all updates it offers. Meanwhile, google search for "Audiophile 2496 ubuntu studio". You will see all forum posts of any configuring people tried was resolved years ago :)
Youtube's cool. So many people have helped me here & it's a pleasure to share what I've learnt here (& in my degree.)
You can give ubuntu (the plain version) a try by installing wubi.exe (google for it) on windows. You can then install from the easy "software centre" these packages: ardour2, rosegarden, jack & hyrdogen. But don't worry if you cant be bothered setting it up like that, because as I say, ubuntustudio 12.4lts has it all done for you. So remember april!
@dhruvdheen One other thing. Probably kinda obvious, but I should also mentioned that you may wish to search youtube (when you install those audio applications from the easy "software centre") these packages: ardour2, rosegarden, jack & hyrdogen. For example, i just searched & found a youtube channel called "metalz1000" with easy tutorials.
Lastly (& I promise I'll be quiet now LOL), you should also install "ubuntu restricted extras". Again youtube it. Accept any updates ubuntu offers you too.
