You're right, the absolute value of "X" makes "X" positive.

HOWEVER

What he wrote was "-X" which in fact is misleading. Think of it as "(-)(X)". Now since "X" must be less than 0, "X" will be a negative.

THEREFORE

in reality it is "(-)(-X) = positive"

Simply the variable X is a negative number next to a negative symbol which will turn it positive.
