As a child, after watching this, I couldn't bring myself near a swimming pool for 6 months. I cried so much when I saw this scene, refusing to believe my most favorite character was dead. :-((
I still think this is the stupidest TV death of all time! Okay, okay I guess partly because I didn't see it coming at time. Nobody died in season premieres unless they were in a season finale cliffhanger. LOL Nowadays we are all more in tune with when actors come and go from shows, it is harder to pull off a shocking TV death.
The FALCON CREST 30th ANNIVERSARY Reunion will be December 3, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. For all the details as well as to REGISTER, go to:
w w w . vintagetvreunions. com / falconcrest
The cast is looking forward to meeting all of you there. Book now as seating is limited. Also, get your airline tickets now before the holiday rates go into effect.
Great scenes! Especially the one where Maggie visits Richard in jail and their conciliation. Please do not show scenes between Richard and Lauren, their relation is such a poor substitute for the passion connection Richard and Maggie!!!
To let drown Maggie in the pool was such a crazy really unnecessary idea and it took off the heartpiece of Falcon Crest. After that it was really uninteresting.Does anyone know the reason of the screenwriters behind this idea?
@Susan9058 Susan Sullivan (Maggie) chose not to renew her contract and agreed to come back only for the premiere to wrap up her character. She reportedly was not happy with the exit, either.

Then we see Richard shaving and he too has that look of optimism and being reunited with her and the boys.......then the swimming pool and Richard's 'sixth sense' in the car on route to the courthouse as if he senses the life draining away from Maggie and of course finally being told and he is literally blown off his feet. So sad, cruel and unbelievable. Thanks for the great memories Maggie.
Maggie reflecting in her bedroom and after finally putting the ring on her finger the camera closes in and we see her closing her eyes satisfactorily as she looks forward to Richard's release and their new beginning.
It still catches your breath every time you see this as the episode is a mini-story in itself. Maggie reluctantly visits Richard in prison, he confesses how wrong he's been and is truly sorry and will make amends, she realises he is in earnest and they reconcile passionately.
This was brutal as you said, RCFC, but I think it was very well done. I like the way they interspersed scenes of R and M as she is drowning. The startled look R has in the back of the car also hits me hard; it's as if R sensed something was wrong as she dies.
I thought the season was off to an interesting start. The MIchael Sharpe character had flair. Compared to him, Richard could be the good guy again. Too bad TPTB couldn't afford to keep Sullivan around.
@TheAvengingAngel85 Well, it has been rumored that TPTB fired Susan Sullivan outright. She says that both she and they agreed that Maggie had reached her peak. I disagree. Maggie should have been there until the final ep.
@bluenail03 Yes, I read an interview an interview she did in 2001 where she basically stated she was let go due to money. I can no longer find the entire interview online, but I'll post an excerpt that I posted on another FC message board sometime back.
ROB: Now, was that [Maggie's death] because you had decided to leave the show?
SS: I think that what really happened was that my contract was up and I think they decided that perhaps they could pump some new life into the show. So they brought in Gregory Harrison and took the show in a whole new direction...
And then they brought in another actress to serve that function [i.e. moral compass/heroine]. Part of it is also that your salary accumulates over the years and we were going into the ninth year. So, they could take my salary and bring in two actors for the price of one.
@Koach127 I certainly don't have any plans to show the Lauren/Richard romance but Lauren will feature in some of the scenes I intend to post with Richard and the boys.
@twizz531 Richard collapsing as his lawyer tells him Maggie has died always gets me. It was brutal and cruel the way they killed Maggie off like they did. It was just so unfair!
This might be one of the most disturbing death scenes I've ever seen...

@klakaniza
and perhaps one of the most shocking in tv history, Patrick O' Hearn should have gotten an emmy Nomination for that score he did on that scene.

@TheAvengingAngel85 Though the show still had the name Falcon Crest, it wasn't even remotely like its previous seasons.

Maggie's death still gets to me, even after all this time. I just want to yell at the screen, "Don't do it. Don't go in the water."
