awesome fucking song. while kristin hersh is a goddess to me, and i'm sure she contributed that excellent guitar sound to it, tanya donelly has an amazing song here. thanks for sharing it. great video, i look forward to seeing a live version of the song.
@DavidGallaher1 ...OF ALL THE THROWING MUSES ALBUMS...AND I AM A BIG FAN...I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE REAL rAMONA SUCKED THE MOST....MAYBE HALF OF IT WAS GOOD.....sorry for shouting...
Discovering this band and listening to their records as a teenager was a life-changing event for me, most of all based on the pure satisfaction of listening to them. Seing their videos is almost more than I can take, this is so awesome!
Tanya Donelly is one of the most underrated musicians ever. But then on a selfish level I'm sort of glad she is. It's kept her music pure and not spoiled by success.
I used to have this song on repeat while I was getting ready to go out in my late teens, now I have it on repeat to clean my house/mortage, ergh I feel old, but still love the song
This song and Counting Backwards being on the Indie Chart got me into TM all those years ago at university. They are why we have a cat called Dizzy and a dog called Dylan.
Just heard this song on XMU this morning -(thx Josiah!) - first time in YEARS!!! Forgot how much I loved them! This is an awesome song and brings back great memories of the great music of the time. Tanya is so cute in this one! (sigh) :)
@JungleJack1978 Listen to some Hole, they get a bad rep because of Courtney Love but they're still really good. Also Echobelly, Elastica, Doll and more modernly the Vivian Girls and The Dum Dum Girls. If your interested in the kinda 90s grrl band explosion Never mind the bollocks: Women rewrite rock has interviews with all these bands, it's really good.
@fatcatbuzz I agree up till their new album, which is good, despite the fact that it's not really Hole. Pretty on the Inside is one of the best albums of the 90's though.
@annaakhmatova Yeah, Pretty On The Inside was alright, but not great. I think their best one was Live Through This. It seemed to make sense after Kurt died. I'm not going to get into it with people about what they believed happen to Kurt or try to convince anyone. In fact, I think they whole murder conspiracy is just that, a conspiracy and the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Courtney may not be the most pleasant person in the history of rock, but she is no murderer.
@fatcatbuzz It's my personal favorite but I know it's not for everyone. I do get your point about Live Through This, and it is also a great album, but the rawness of the first one is one of the things that sets Hole apart from the shock tactics used by some (not all) Riot Grrl bands.
@annaakhmatova I went through a period when I listened to nothing but female rock music. Hole was on that list for sure. I think they were a great band (notice how I wrote "were"), but Courtney became obsessed with becoming a celebrity and obliterated that raw power that they had that you mentioned. I hear Courtney Love is trying to make and comeback and I hope the best for her. I just hope she doesn't do what so many 60's rockers did (and still do) and try to live in the past.
@fatcatbuzz He he, that's kinda where I am now! I disliked Celebrity Skin, though the title track did introduce me to Hole it was much too commercial and poppy to really match Courtney Love's lyrics. Most matierial released after that was pretty awful, but the new album Nobody's Daughter, released under the name of hole though it's really just Courtney and session musicians is quite good. She really is a talented lyricist and the tracks i've heard off it are (mostly) good.
@annaakhmatova I must be a little older than you for sure because I remember Hole before Live Through This. I actually saw Hole live in either 1994 or 1995. They were alright live, but not great. It might have also been because I saw them at the Target Center in Minneapolis which is not known for the best sound quality. She kept on talking about weird shit like how she use to be a stripper right down the road and how "nigger" and "spic" are nice words. I though Celebrity Skin was horrible.
When this disc was released all my friends were headbangers, hardcore punks or skaters, and wannabe flower children Dead Heads. In spite of those genre labels someone stole the disc from me.
People that go on about how this is representative of when music was good and why can't bands be like this now are kind of pathetic. There is way more music out now than the early 90s, it is easier to make and distribute than it has ever been before. If you can't find anything good now, then you are not looking/listening. You are turning in to an old fogey, and might as well be listening to April Wine on "classic" rock stations. Yeah, great song, Tanya is uber-sexy in this vid, but move on.
@Shirokinukatsukami couldn't agree more. there is always good music around and all you have to do is open your mind and ears to find it. It is not bad going back to browse some good music but being stuck there means that you just miss yourself and not the music.
Oh no, don't get me wrong. i listen to old music too, it is just that i also try to keep up with things nowadays too. Some of my favorite singles and albums ever have come out in the past few years. If i had stopped listening to things, and thought like a lot of these other comments, i would have missed so much.
But again, Tanya is so gorgeous in this vid, more than any other one i think. And of course Kristin is preggo...
@Shirokinukatsukami i agree so much with u & i consider myself a 90`s freak. for me it was the perfect decade musically speaking, but I know that i feel that way due to nostalgie & those things. when u look things back in time they always look better. yeap, there r a lot of shit on the music of today but there was also a lot in the 90´s. those days the genres where more pure, true; nowadays we r listening music produced by people that are infliuenciated by the 90´s sound & that is really cool!
what difference does it make that there is, as you purport, "way more music out there now than the early 90s"??? does more music equal better music? what an utterly idiotic statement.
More music means more choice, more genres, more experimentation, more art, more chances for the song or sound to hit you etc etc. You are right to assume that more of something does not equal a better quality, but that is not really the situation here, you are just being obtuse. It's not that hard to grasp the concept. If you are some hoary old fogey bitterly living in the past, well that says more about you than the state of music.
I agree since I still find good but unknown new bands frequently, as striking as old bands from 60-90s. But I have to say most famous new bands, no matter “mainstream” or "indie", are way worse than those big names from the last century, at least in my ears. And also, you can find and probably already found a lot of unknown but excellent old bands, for the sake of internet.
yeah, there are still decent bands out there, and a lot of music, but there was a lot of bands even back then releasing stuff in a diy way. most of them remain obscure with a few 7 inch singles. the difference is bands today just to rehash what was done in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s, while all those bands were original and innovative. you really felt like you were part of a scene back then, where today it's just all mish mashed around @Shirokinukatsukami
Yeah, there is a certain sense of displacement caused by such things as the Net, so "scenes" are not as immediate, organic or as inclusive as they once were. That's a case for Facebook friends not meaning anything.
i wouldn't say that all bands today rehash stuff, that is an old arguement from even back in the '90s. Think of today's innovative music like Animal Collective, Burial, the xx or something like that, not really a retread.
I agree fatcatbuzz...I guess that is time that, the "underground" great music appears again. Is all over the world this mainstream rubbish..I live in México City and part time at London...and seems the same..thank you!!!
Let's see if I can phrase this properly and succinctly so that it accurately portrays my feelings toward the situation... (Inhale...) WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ColorsBright The thing is you don't really need MTV2 anymore. We have the Internet. Sure, I would take a TV station that played good music all day long over the Internet myself and when I was growing up I use to like MTV because there was no such thing as Youtube and no one had the Internet. No one even had cell phones. A lot more radio stations took more chances on new music that wasn't commercial. I guess those days are gone which is really sad and shows the current state of music these days.
It's about time another Nirvana like came in to throw off the mainstream artists and bring in some music that dares to be different rather than the same old like a lot of recent mainstream music is.
@IrishEyedBlue Yep, that would be nice and I totally agree. The only thing is that, to me, Nirvana was just one of many bands that were not catering to mainstream music back then. People act like Nirvana stood alone again corporate music, but there were alot of others that did, too. 4AD was and still is an important indie label. Nirvana actually signed to a major label before the Smashing Pumpkins did. Gish was release on Caroline Records in 1991 while Nevermind was on DGC that same year.
@fatcatbuzz not really. MTV2 is just where newer//indie/underground music was played while MTV started to fill time blocks with Real World, Spring Break and all of the horrible game show crap. By this time, MTV was only showing the same Metallica, Madonna, Nirvana and other mainstream crap between commercials.
@pnice000 Well, we will have to disagree because I will stand by what I said. I never really liked MTV2 and thought most of that station catered to mainstream rubbish. I mentioned MTV in the late 80s and early 90s when the did play a diverse selection of music that was new/indie/underground. I think it was around 1995 when that all stopped and they started showing reality show. In the early 90s they still had shows like 120 Minutes, Yo MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball, etc. Not after 1995.
@fatcatbuzz not really. MTV2 is just where newer//indie/underground music was played while MTV started to fill time blocks with Real World, Spring Break and all of the horrible game show crap. sorry but this band died fer me when Tonya left. That's just that. Never was as interesting since. But I adored this video above all others. I think Tonya is fantastic, especially in this. Sexy :)
Actually they are step sisters, not cousins. They met at school and I believe Tanya's father later on married Kristen's mother, so they're only step sisters through marriage rather than birth.
Actually Kristen was SUPER pregnant when we shot this, so she couldn't do a lot. That's why it is more Tonya oriented. I certainly hope I didn't add to any tensions. I love them both! This video almost didn't happen as we lost the original location 2 days before we shot. Our gaffer knew of this space on the lower east side and it all came together in the end. We got really lucky with the natural light.
@kelam669 I don't think there was tension as Greggo2 says. It was more that Tanya wanted to front her own band. And look what that led to. Belly! One of the best bands in the early 90s.
@Greggo2 I don't know there was alot of tension. I know Tanya left to do Belly because she wanted to do more of her own type of music. But, they are cousins I believe and they still play together to this day. I've seen recent Youtube clips.
Fabulous video of a wonderful band. Tanya certainly has a knack of writing and performing amazingly catchy songs which never diminish with time. Perfect.
The thing about 120 Minutes now is it is not the same. They do not have great band interviews, live performances and hosts. Back when they played stuff like this was the best. If it only went back to the way it was...
Love the spiralling sound to this song and the way Tanya's voice is used like another instrument. Is there a story or some incident that inspired this song?
You know, there are time when I agree with you on that one. I love Kristen Hersh, but Tanya had a great sense for pop music while still staying true to her indie music roots that was Throwing Muses.
@megatherium01 She was also in the Breeders for a short time! See the video Safari and she's there playing guitar. I love how alot of the 90's artists used to be in each other bands. Such a better time.
Oh, definately. I miss shows like 120 Minutes back when MTV acually played video. Before even an MTV2. There is good music out there today, but it's just way harder to find. You'll never find it on commercial radio.

This is my favorite Muses song ever and I still love it after 16 years!

Belly! One of the best bands in the early 90s.

tanya's hot.

I loved this song when I heard it years ago; had it on a mixed tape NEVER GUESSED it was the T Muses!! Cool!

I wonder if the director of this video added to the tensions between Hersh and Donelley- lotsa Tanya, not so much Kristin.
Greggo2 1 year ago
@Greggo2 I don't know there was alot of tension. I know Tanya left to do Belly because she wanted to do more of her own type of music. But, they are cousins I believe and they still play together to this day. I've seen recent Youtube clips.

@fatcatbuzz actually they're step-sisters.

Fabulous video of a wonderful band. Tanya certainly has a knack of writing and performing amazingly catchy songs which never diminish with time. Perfect.

Wow! This music sounds so new, but it's been around for 25 years! Now, that's talent.
Tanya Donelly is one of the most under-rated artists of the 1990s.

Perfect! write a better pop song, i dare you! You cant, its been done, and how beautifully. Tanya Donelly I LOVE YOU....

slow dog is a better pop song. I interviewed her twice. Once with the muses once with belly. She is my supreme GODESS.

thank goodness for 120 minutes,,its like 1 my favorite shows for real music
plaidINTERNATIONAL 1 year ago 4
The thing about 120 Minutes now is it is not the same. They do not have great band interviews, live performances and hosts. Back when they played stuff like this was the best. If it only went back to the way it was...

Love the spiralling sound to this song and the way Tanya's voice is used like another instrument. Is there a story or some incident that inspired this song?

I love Tanya Donelly. Some may consider it a travesty, but part of me likes Belly a lot more than Muses.
Thanks for the vid. I was about to upload this song, but I'm glad I did a search before I did.

You know, there are time when I agree with you on that one. I love Kristen Hersh, but Tanya had a great sense for pop music while still staying true to her indie music roots that was Throwing Muses.
fatcatbuzz 2 years ago
@megatherium01 She was also in the Breeders for a short time! See the video Safari and she's there playing guitar. I love how alot of the 90's artists used to be in each other bands. Such a better time.

Oh, definately. I miss shows like 120 Minutes back when MTV acually played video. Before even an MTV2. There is good music out there today, but it's just way harder to find. You'll never find it on commercial radio.
fatcatbuzz 2 years ago
@ahughes351 Totally, and MTV still played MUSIC! Imagine that!
