Support our troops by bringing them out of a war zone.
Support our troops by not spending their lives needlessly.
Ron Paul has the most contributions from military serving men and women (more than the other republican nominees put together) and has been the biggest advocator for bringing solders home. Doesn't that say something? (I'm not a complete fan of Ron Paul but I give credit for good ideas when I hear them.)
I have served for 8.5 years in my country's military. To me, being a soldier is important it because I value the opportunity I have to serve my country and community. I value that I can protect my country in times of war and offer assistance in times of disaster.
That being said, I would hope that we never fight a war. Not because I fear war, but simply because warfare is the last option when diplomacy fails. I see myself as an ends to a means, albeit not one that is should be a first option.
@CrazedCousinDougal I think it is important to support the troops because we simply are doing a role. That being said, a government should ensure that they never place us in unnecessary danger, and if necessary, to do it with the best support (resources, manpower and political will) possible. We are simply a tool of the government. If you wish to chastise anyone, it needs to be the government who decides upon warfare, rather than a soldier.
@CrazedCousinDougal Ultimately, the goal of a military is to exist in such a way that warfare is no longer necessary, either as a deterrant, or as an institution that can eliminate the enemy's capability to wage war against it, through the appropriate acquisition of intelligence. Hopefully, soldiers should hold high standards of morality and integrity, carry out their duty with responisbility and seek to reflect the highest standards of their nation.
@CrazedCousinDougal A soldier's job is to effectively make himself obsolete. To deny the enemy capability and intent eliminates the threat of conflict. Thus it is not a strange thing for a soldier to desire peace. It is only the natural endstate of a job well done.
I also support peace because my friends are soldiers too. I do not want to see anything bad happen to them. If there is peace, I have nothing to worry about...
You cannot support peace and troops at the same time, that is ridiculous.
I never cheer when someone dies, but i wont drop a tear if you colaborate with the death of many people (directly or indirectly), or even if you died in combat.

This is an issue I actually struggle with. I do not and cannot support the occupation(remember, war was never actually declared.) So what does 'Support Our Troops' truely mean? Support what they're doing? No. Because they are doing what they are told, and I don't aggree with or TRUST their boss. Obviously I do not BLAME them for anything(i.e. The Occupation or its failure to be resolved), but I can only 'support' them as much as I do my dear friends and family that are republicans...
So what the hell are you doing to support them? Sending care packages? Supportive emails and letters? Or are you voting for a candidate who will profit from their death?
All of our men and women that serve the military and our politicians both state and federal level take the oath to the Constitution. They are "public servants". They take an oath to serve the best interest of the American people, NOT "special interests", lobbyists, and multinational corporations. Right now what's not being talked about is the military contractors that are going about spreading democracy on behalf of the corporations that represent America.
I agree that we can support our troops and support peace at the same time. We are now a country that has more than 700 bases in more than 130 countries. We should be protecting our borders both north and south. Also we need to be on the defense not on the offense. We should be supporting the Just War Theory--we should not attack unless we are being attacked. There was no ties to Iraq with 911 and even the media said that, not many people paid attention but yes the hijackers were Saudis

Both of my grandfathers are WW2 vets, one was in the navy and never really saw combat outside of a few quick spats of AA gun fire at passing japanese aircrafts, the other was sent to the front lines as an ammunition carrier for an M60 machine gun, curiously, the one who never saw combat is all for the iraq conflict and the one who did is a pacifist and can still be heard screaming at night from recurring war dreams
yea but if you look into it you know why??? your grandfather doesnt wish what he saw upon anyone else. my father told me the same thing before i joined.. i told him "dad whats the difference between fightin here on the streets and iraq? in iraq i can help people earn freedom here they kill for a eight ball
I think that it can be possible to support peace in a demonstration and support the troops. It has to be done very carefully though by monitoring the signs that they display and only sticking to positive signs that promote peace and do not denigrate what our troops are doing. It is always hard for me because I have a lot of anger because of the way they treated my father but I have to understand that it is also what my father fought for.
I'm not sure you have an accurate definition of the word "liberal." If you go to my YouTube profile, you'll find the address of a webpage with dozens of accurate dictionary definitions of the word "liberal."
Also, what about great liberal US Presidents like FDR and JFK?
Nice propaganda. If we pulled out of Iraq today, tell us how suddenly our country is taken over? Hmmm? Are you saying that they have an actual air force and can come over here with jets and bombs? They can't. Stop being a hysterical bitch.
your are mistaken. The war is over. What is victory???? tell me??? They don't want anything accept an islamic state. They aren't coming over here, we came over there and for what? You'll see whoever replaces Saddam will be much worse. Read a book.
A real soldier prays for peace. As do I. I support those that want that as well. What does it mean to support our troops??? Are the troops ever responsible for unjust wars??? Who is responsible for unjust wars??? Last one, is war unjust in itself???
On something that's kind of similar, This one asshole came up to my mom in the middle of a parking lot and said,"how can you have an anti-bush bumper sticker with a support the troops sticker?" I know, what a freakin' RETARD!!!! You can not like the president and still respect the troops.
The goal of every solider is to achive peace through war so by supproting the troop one in turn supports peace automatically it's just now days supporting the troop usually come down to protecting them from the politicans.
somehow i doubt that the majority of the american soldiers joined the army just because they care so much for the iraqi people, i havent seen a single american soldier talking positively about the iraqi culture or showing any sign of identifying themself with the specific task, and they don't seem to be real democracy enthusiasts neither, at best I see a woolly drive from the guts to "do good" but without any will of adapting, learning or taking personal responsibility

What people don't understand is it was Bush's grandfather that supported Hitler and it has always been the Bush's that have supported the eact same people that we bring to power and then we go and tear them down and they get to steal more money from the profits of war. Don't you people fuking get it, do your homework. Every attack that's taken place in this country was allowed by Americans that wish to profit from it. People are ignorant or stupid that think anything else.
My only brother, two years younger than I, passed away last December. His only wish before he died was that we try to get him a Unit patch his B-52 unit had won right before he shipped out to Guam. His unit ws the first B-52 Squadron to bomb North Vietnam. We were unable to get the patch for him before his passing. I was struck by the fact that facing eminent death at the age of 63, it was what mattered most to him. Thank you again for doing this.
I am an amateur genealogist. Almost every family in my family tree going back to 1703, my earliest family in America has served in the armed forces. I believe we must honor and protect our veterans. Honor them for serving and protect them against wasteful abuse of their fidelity in wars without merit such as Viet Nam and Iraq.
I agree that supporting our troops does not mean supporting every foolish foreign entanglement. Also, I think your question is particularly apt on this day: formerly Armistice Day, (a day celebrating peace, the end of the "Great War"). Why didn't they pick a different day to honor vets?
My Father In Law, Who was a Captain of a Bomber over Germany in World War II, and then went to Yale with George Bush senior, is in agreement with you in philiosophy. He of German descent, a big strong intellectual man, and 100% American. He supports our troops very much. He has many war stories. But he also believes in peace and agrees with the teachings of Buddha. Seemingly a dichotomy, but for the thoughtful not difficult to grasp.
We all owe thanks to the veterans and soldiers who have served our country in times of war.
Not only is it possible to support the troops while pressing for peace, it's necessary. What happened during and after Viet Nam to returning soldiers is a stain on our national conscience, and must not be repeated.
I love this country and I know full well that I owe my rights to our military going back to the courageous fighters of the American Revolution. Soliders provide me with my right to speak and live as I want.
Now don't be confused, I am not speaking of the "freedom" that Bush refers to. He has distorted that word into a form of control. I support the troops and I support peace and I am a liberal.
I thank all memebers of the armed services every day. I am in awe of the sacrifices that these strangers and their families make for me every day.
As for supporting peace and the troops? Define peace? We could simply surrender our country to the Islamic facists and live in peace under their rule. Then we'd be at peace, rather than war.
To me, supporting our troops means doing what we can to protect them from being in the service to the lies that led to this unsubstantiated war, lies that hide the corrupt and rampant privatization of the spoils of this war, lies that have led to the deaths of countless innocent human beings (troops included), etc. etc. etc... All in the service of a self serving War on Terror? If they are not really fighting for "God" and Country, they should be home with their families living in peace....
I agree with the gist of the video, and yes it is possible to support the troops and peace at the same time. However, do you honestly believe that a man who continues to send our soldiers to certain death in Iraq knowing the illegitimacy and failure of this war actually cares about them?
I think it depends on what you mean by support. I support the troops as human beings, I don't want them to be harmed, but don't support their actions, though I understand they are following orders and have no control over what they must and musn't do.
Of course it's possible. Not only POSSIBLE, but NECESSARY! We must ALWAYS support peace...or be moving TOWARD peace...and that does NOT conflict with supporting EVERYONE in uniform! Great reminder, LV! Didn't the nation do that during WWII? Everyone was fighting..but for ONE GOAL...PEACE!
I light of your thoughts, I reminded me to remember my grandfather's time of service. He fought in WWII, including on D-Day. He was one of the first men on the sand and was one of the only four from his infantry that survived. Your video made me realize that I need to be sure to thank him for his service, and do it much more often.
Naturally, I do agree with your POV, and thank you for putting it out there so respectfully.
Buy criticizing that very fact that we are at war (IRAQ) means that you don't support the war which also means that you dont support the troops fighting in that war.
You see our Prez GWB is the CNC of our Armed forces, and the troops that make up the Armed forces can NOT cherry pick wheather or not they will go to war or even support the war, all they can do is their job.. following the orders of CNC.
The troops may not have that option, but we do. We can still respect their sacrifice and wish for their safety while opposing the direction of their leadership.
you can't support the troops and oppose a war, its hypocrisy. The same troops who are looking for chemical weapons in iraq used chemical weapons on iraqies. saying 'support the troops' is promoting right wing propaganda.
a lot of troops 'fight' in iraq cuz they r paid to do so, not cuz they 'protect freedom'
all those who fought in vietnam, gulf I & II, were used for politicial interests. noone should take pride in that.
You're trying to balance out two opposing idealogies. Actually they dont have to be in conflict, they can harmonize - thats what you're trying to do, eh? I feel you're doing a fine job at meeting the challenge. Keep on!
Thank you Vets, though I am against this war I am proud of our nation for the strong support of our troops and that we have finally decided to give them the respect (if not the care) they deserve.
Very goood job LiberalViewer...My experiences are similar to yours as my father is a veteran as well. As for your question, I ceratinly think its possible to support the troops and be for peace as there is not better support for the troops then to take them out of harms way. I don't think any veteran who has seen combat wants to see their children have to experience the same hell that they saw, so we honour the vets when we bring the troops home as well.
Mary thanks her father, who served in WWII. He was a Canadian, but later became a U.S. Citizen. I'd like to thank my grandfather, who served both in WWII & Korea, and we both would like to thank all our brave veterans.
We do believe it's possible to both support our troops and peace. Mary's father would agree. (My grandfather, not so much. But so it goes.)
I'm an Army veteran and yes, it is possible to support peace while still supporting the troops. Most of our troops do want peace because nobody really WANTS to be in a war.
Support our troops by bringing them out of a war zone.
Support our troops by not spending their lives needlessly.

Great video LV.

Canada had done it for years. Even now Canadians are trying as much to help as they are doing their best to survive and win.

Buy criticizing that very fact that we are at war (IRAQ) means that you don't support the war which also means that you dont support the troops fighting in that war.
You see our Prez GWB is the CNC of our Armed forces, and the troops that make up the Armed forces can NOT cherry pick wheather or not they will go to war or even support the war, all they can do is their job.. following the orders of CNC.

you don't have much credibility when you misspell "buy" like that

The troops may not have that option, but we do. We can still respect their sacrifice and wish for their safety while opposing the direction of their leadership.

i think you're wrong lv,
you can't support the troops and oppose a war, its hypocrisy.

I do believe we can support peace and our troops.

It's entirely possible to support peace and Americans serving in uniform at the same time.

Thank you for this touching & personal video, LV.

You're welcome.
I'm an Army veteran and yes, it is possible to support peace while still supporting the troops. Most of our troops do want peace because nobody really WANTS to be in a war.
