There are free servers, they're legal too so if you want to play it for free there is several options but the servers vary depending on who hosts it. Many people change how the game looks etc.

Go check out mortal online they are trying to make it like uo was back in the day. Its in open beta too so ill go check that out it might bring alot of uo players. Its turning out to be real cool. The system is almost like uo. spells, fighting,skills, anyways go check it out.

While I love old games (which my channel should show) and the way they look, it may be nice to try out a more modern UO for a change. I mean, the 2D client has a serious lack of detail -- which I *suppose* is really charming, but still. UO always did look older than it was, though.

As already mentioned, the first song is indeed "Walking" from Ultima IX. However the second track is "StonesHarpLoop", also from the 9th game. "Stones" has existed in every version of Ultima since IV, and UO originally came with it's own too; but I believe it was the 3d client that patched in a lot of the UIX tracks.

The lyrics to "Stones" were written by Kathleen "Gwenno" Jones, who died of cancer in November, 2000. The Memorial To Gwenno in Ilshenar is thus dedicated to her, in game and out.

This is the second time they've tried to "improve" the graphics of Ultima Online. This is the second time they've failed.

They should spend that effort on something else and leave the original client alone. If they want new graphics, make an entirely new game from the ground up rather than being limited constantly by the old client.

As good as UO was, it's been long enough and it needs a true proper successor, preferably one that recreates the game pre UO:Ren expansion.

They didn't fail stupid. The new graphics look awesome. Old UO graphics on expansions had some shit 3d model type sprites which looked blocky and crappy, now you have photorealistic picture, looks awesome.

I played this game sometime right before the Renaissance expansion came out... I must have been only 12 or 13, but I played it extensively for several years, and sporadically afterward for several more.

The music really takes me back... UO definitely was a fantastic game.

UO will never look graphically apealing next to all the other modern games on the shelves so they should instead focus on catering for us veterans making us enjoy it like we used to, before they wreaked havoc on the game. They seem to ignore those of us who played since it's very beginning in favour of people who barely scratched the surface of what the game has to offer.

It's Ultima IX music, called Walking I think. I found it in the Ultima Online files. One of those rare songs they barely use in the game. It's brilliant really, I think there is a spot around Yew in the game that plays the song.

You'd be lucky to find that one though, the other expansions you can buy online. There is one coming out soon which is called Stygian Abyss but I'm not sure if it will be released on DVD. It's using the UO:KR client which is seen in this video. Both clients work though so it's whatever you prefer. I hope that helps, if you need to know more check out uoherald.

Well Kingdom Reborn is only downloadable I think, there might be a DvD you could buy off their site. You can buy other upgrades in stores. Just pick up any expansion and you're set. You need to download one of the expansions though. Well buy it online anyway. Not sure what the price is anymore but I paid like EUR 39,99 per 3 months. I think the going price per month is 13,99/mo EUR. Anyway, I recommend buying Ultima Online Samurai Empire or Ultima Online: 9th Anniversary Collection.

Hmm... Darkfall looks good.. but it's graphics are outdated and it's been in production for 5+ years. But for me.. graphics isn't the deciding factor.

Darkfall pretty much took it back to the begining. No class's, you can be the jack of all trades, skills based on skill points that decay and grow as you use them.

Now if only they would get it done...

Look at the newest screenshots, and watch the new vid when it comes out, the graphics are hardly dated at all, from some of theolder clients yes, but DF will be advanced enough to even consider "next gen" with most aspects. But of course some texture parts will be nulled a little for performance issues to make battles like 100+ smoother

If they re-released UO in its T2A (The second age) state and kept the fundamentals, using the new client...then i might give it another go. The state of UO at present with its Ninja, necro and other character types is in ruins. Doubt it will happen though since EA don't listen to their consumers.

Does ultima online have the grand storylines of the original series? I have never played an on-line RPG but have played and finished almost all of the original Ultima games.

If I were to play an on-line RPG, it would most likely be this one, since from what I read, most on-line RPG are just hack-and-slash games that pay little attention to storylines.

Is this game worth getting for a newcomer? Or would I be powerless with no chance of ever being on par with long-time players???

Well, if you have a doubt, play first some UO free shards, and then, if you like it, you can buy the game, but IMHO, EA made UO jump into the abyss when they added 3D graphics, it just doesn't make for it. The 2D graphics were awesome, and any 2D UO player can say that.

aye sadly most online games are just hack and slash, UO is different in that way that it has several things you can do on and focus on instead of just fighting. It has a vague storyline, it involves the crystal that Mondain had to obtain power over the realm. the Avatar shattered the gem and basically the whole world you interact in is bound to these gems, like the main stories. Each world had their own background story, there is GM story arcs going on in the game and you can of course Role-play

and like Galdhon said, play on the free shards to try it out. They are completely legal, if you like complex worlds with houses and player cities there are other games out there. UO does have a certain touch which most games lack but you'd prolly find more players to interact with on other online games.

UO "Was" but Carebear land aka Trammal and AoS pretty much killed any hope for it beyond that. not to mention the major array of balance issues, Tank mages, Heavy crossbows of retarted damage, Tamers having 3-5 dragons out at once just macroing "all kill", Precasting/hally hits, and so on, AoS just made it worse by adding overpowered Itemization to the mix.

ahh my thanks :) it's music from the 2d client, not that widely used in the game but if you go into the music folder you can play some of the tunes. This one is called Walking, I think it is also used in Ultima IX. Great song, it really makes you want to play the Ultima games :)

KR isn't what it's made out to be. 2D client is much better than KR. And it doesn't LITERALLY take 3 hours to download.

If all things they should do with the game is re-making UO2. That was the best graphics, best everything. I don't know. Thats my opinion.

well in a sense it is the old gameplay still, they did improve the targetting system and so on before UOKR was actually announced. It was somewhere around when Mondain's Legacy came out... it is a shame though when I look back at the old UO and from the days when I was a newbie... I kinda miss the old stuff but oh well... we should look ahead!

UOKR still looks pretty neat and might be enough to revive the game... I have to admit that the population has gone down greatly since I started playing... I think it's partly because of the games like WoW or WAR that people left. It's still good ol' UO in the end though :)

UO:KR is a downloaded client at the moment but the regular client can be bought, if you're hesitant they will be releasing a new expansion soon. Perhaps wait until Ultima Online Stygian Abyss comes out and they will release a CD? With that it's also the 10 year anniversary coming up so who knows what they have in store! :)

I Have dabbled with alot of Mmos But I was really intruiged by UO i was considoring getting it,But i was around 4 at the peak of its time,so now that im intrested in mmos I wasnt going to bother because i didnt think they´red be much players KR gave my new hope,I just wanted to know is the gameplay/graphics bearable,Like WoW where the game is smooth to play,is Uo like this? or Baulders gate?

It's pretty smooth, in the 2d client which should be active for a while longer. You have it smooth all the time or most of the time because of the low graphic details. In UOKR you could have lag problems, I guess it depends on your computer but with a 6800XT Nvidia card, 1gb ram and running on Windows XP you should be alright.
