  • your hi hat sounds really cool ! which one is it ?

  • Thanks :-) It's a 13" Zildijan K.

  • wicked stuff at 6:05 - 6:10 :)

  • Superb playing. I watch alot of your videos amongst others and after 3 years out of it youve helped to inspire me to pick up the sticks again. Cheers!

  • Thanx mate, that's really nice to hear :-))

  • @We8City Yeah me too :D

  • well done, this is good stuff! the first three indipendences are ok but then it becomes more difficult and have to work on it!

  • thanks for the tips

  • what hi-hat are you using? its soo nice sounding

  • Thank you :-) These are 13" Zildijan K's

  • i'm not sure why people are saying your mix is good. You're snare sounds revolting.

  • @Drewberry32

I love it, it's just tuned tightly...

  • i like when u just started playin at the end. u used that same basic beat u were talkin about but u mixed it up and made it sound pro.

  • Great mix ,,,Snare sounds so cool ,the Kick hits you in the chest

  • At last one good drummer ... there is so few good drummers on youtube .. Keep it up man.

  • love this pattern, you can diversify it so much

  • A brady snare! go the aussies! haha

  • the beginning is basicly a swiss army triplet beat

  • Nice playing man!

  • Thanks! I appreciate it :-)

    LG Wolfgang

  • His videos are the reason I know drums today.

  • If you imagine all the 16th notes, then you put them in groups of 3, you would play the first 2 notes on the hi-hat, open the second of those two and don't play the third note at all.

    Have fun!

    Cheers Ydna Murd

  • Is there any way you could write that first one out?

  • You can easily do this too, it will help you understand what's going on. Draw 3 bars of a groove with a continous 16th note hihat. Every third hi-hat note isn't played, so either cross it out or mark it in any way. Read only the ones you wanna play, when that works open the hi-hat on the second stroke of the pairs you created all the way through those 3 bars. Have fun! Cheers Ydna Murd

  • Is there any chance you could write it out?

  • Good job man! You are a really skilled drummer,I can see that in your other video's too! :)

  • Thank you, I appreciate it :-)

  • Great sounding hats. What are they?

  • Thanks. Those are 13" Zildijan K's

  • What kind of snare are u useing?

  • My main snare is a 14" Brady, the aux snare is a 10" Mapex Black Panther

  • sickk kit

  • what hi hat are you using?

  • That's a 13" Zildijan K

  • @Jungleritter

its good that someone like you is putting effort on sharing your techniques to others...this is a good lesson...and youre a good teacher,..

  • Thanks very much for this nice comment :-)

  • @Jungleritter yeah u deserve it

  • Fag

  • Fatty

  • @Jungleritter You are calling HIM a fatty? I rather be fat then just sit and troll in front of a screen. He has talent you dont.

  • @MrQWERTY56789 Um.... Jungleritter is the creator of the video and the guy in the video.

  • good lesson

  • Now thats how a title should be!

  • @MillerBeDaBomb sorry but what a idiotic question its a question of the matter of the sound they make (not straight)

  • what are you saying at 5:05 some kind of rythm or rudiment?

  • I mentioned that this is a polyrhythm. That means that two different rhythms are happening at the same time. This pattern needs 3 bars/measures to resolve.

Another polyrhythm is to play triplets with your left hand and straight eights with your right hand for example.

    Cheers

    Ydna Murd

  • I can´t really answer that question without having a look at your hi-hat and the stand, sorry!

  • Yet another valuable lesson in hihat/hand/foot coordination/independence. Honestly even something as simple as a rock beat can become extremely challenging when correctly utilizing technique such as this! Stoked for more videos!

  • It's called- "Dennis Chambers"

  • nice ideas, what hihat mic is that?

    g

  • Thanks! That´s a Rode NT5

  • what hi hat to use in this video?

THANKS, I LIKE THE SOUND OF HI HAT

  • It´s a 13" Zildijan K

    Cheers

    Ydna

  • can you post the notation for the basic beat?

  • damn that snare sound really good !

  • dein englisch ist doch super

  • Man you're good but stop mumbling!

  • Yeah, I know :-)) I still struggle with my english.

  • @Jungleritter Dude I feel terrible. I had no right to attack you like that. Keep up the good work. I've been working on polyrhythmic hi-hat patterns for a while and you stuff has REALLY helped me. Peace.

  • Hey mate, no problem, I didn´t feel attacked in any way because you´re certainly right :-) I´m always open for constructive critique and I know I have to work on opening my mouth a bit more when I speak, German is certainly easier for me, hahaha.

    Cheers

    Ydna

  • if i buy a hi hat. does it include a hi hat stand?. sorry for my bad english

  • No, they come seperately

  • @Jungleritter how much do a hi hats stand cost?

  • Check your local music store for prices, please.

  • @Jungleritter sorry. no time to go to the mall.

  • great drummin' guy, good job

  • when i play i don't cross my arms i use the hi hat with my left arm, dose this really matter, hope i can find your book.

  • The open approach is great, actually the better way to play. Great if it works for you! You can find the english versions of my books ONLY through my webpage drumgate.com

    Cheers

    Ydna

  • Killer Hi-Hats!! and Sick Snare!! Gr8 Stuff!! :D

  • Thanks mate :-))

  • your lessons are really helpful i can never come up with good drum beats haha

  • what's the side snare u got there?

  • That´s a 10" Mapex Black Panther

  • @Jungleritter 10"?! Isn't that a bit TO small?

  • I don´t think so, I love 10" snare drums as side snares :-))

  • @Jungleritter sry^^ don't got, you used it as a sidesnare :P

  • this just proved that drum lessons goes somewhere

  • Like a TOOL!

  • listen to the song EULOGY by TOOL, the end has an amazing poly-rhythm with the hi hat that will give you some trickyness.

  • this stuff is very awesome. I've been using a lot of this dotted eighths and such for hi-hat patterns in my writing and it has spiced things up quite a bit.

  • Nice!!! Very Nice! Thanks man! (nice taste on grooves)

  • I must tell you , Youre amazing. These beats are very rhythmic anad sound very nice! I wish i could get your book , But I live in India , And I dont think Ill find it here anywhere , Can I ? I really want one! You rock man!

  • god i love this snare <3

U are so good, thank you!

  • Thanx, I appreciate it!

  • first beat is VERY similar, probably is the same beat off eulogy from tool

  • Yeah, that´s pretty close. The bass drum is a little bit different. It´s a concept widely used, Danny wasn´t the first drummer to use this hihat pattern.

    Cheers

    Ydna

  • @Fernandoandretn i was thinking the same thing

  • that could really groove splitting it between the ride and the hi hat if you fill in some ghosts

  • Excellent sound of that precious hi hat!!!

  • i found using a click to do the basic 1234 very useful to get the first technique

  • Mensch, Du bist cool! Ich hab' heute Nacht etwas neues gelehrnt!!! Danke!

  • brady is the best sounding drum on the planet...sonor is great too

    haha NICE WORK

  • That first beat is used in the song Euology by Tool. It comes in at about 6:34 into the song!

  • Also: I'm having trouble opening the high-hat on every second hit with the first beat. I can play it without opening the hats but it sounds much better with it opening on every second. Any help?

  • Well, if your have trouble opening your high-hat at certain points then that just sounds like you have not got your coordination down for that beat yet. If thats the case, then just keep practicing and eventually you should get your coordination down.

  • Good catch!

  • @beendrummin no, danny adds another bassdrum part in it but the hihat groove is the same yes.

  • @beendrummin yeah man an incredibly boring basic beat? well that's to be expected from tool

  • @mightywarriorx well im not sure if its exactly off whats played on eulogy but on eulogy its a 2 over 3 polyrythm which is by far not easy to master. whether your into tool or not the beat is far from basic and boring

  • @paulhab12 they basically play textbook examples in their shit. 2:3 was the first i learned, from a textbook.

  • @mightywarriorx Expected from tool? when was the last time you listend to the band? tool is a really unexpected - it's not just progressive music it's a life philosophy. I got a little off topic but anyway: Danny Carrey is a drumming god... listen to some more stuff from tool - these days they are one of the only bands who can reallly blow your mind...

  • @TheHookerwithapenis Sorry I don't have low standards

  • @mightywarriorx OK, if you call that low standards i won't judge you, you don't know me but at least give an example for a band you'd consider for someone with high standards..

  • @mightywarriorx well i consider that high standards as well but I thought we were talkin' modern music.. whatever man, at least you don't listen to shitty bands i hope - just enjoy music, it's not a sport so don't be judgmental.. personally i think it's pretty obvious that i think you're but who are we to decide what is absolute good or absolute bad music? it's completely subjective.

  • Wow.. well done man. Very informative. Thanks for sharing.

  • Beautiful! I really like this groove. I'm gonna work on this.

  • What kind of hi-hats are those?

  • Zildijan K´s 13"

  • sounds kinda similar to tool's laterlus song bit

  • You didnt explain where your accenting..

  • Which snare drum are you using?

  • The main is a 14" Brady and the aux is a 10" Black Panther by Mapex

  • i think the first groove you played is based in groupings...very nice idea,gj!

  • what do you mean by groupings?

  • Nice grooves! Thanks for sharing!

  • thanks for this video, its a lot of help, actually Im trying to combine this HI-HAT tricks to the EXTREME GHOSTNOTES LESSON! because its possible!

    THANKS A LOT!

  • do you think you could make some more videos showing how to use the side/auxiliary snare !!!! i would really appreciate it

  • Yeah, that´s on my to-to-list, just need to find the time to do it, stay tuned :-)

    Thanx for your interest!

    Cheers

    Ydna

  • Comment removed

  • Could you explain that snare drum fill on 5:35?

    thanx

  • what hi-hat are you using???

  • Zildijan K´s 13 inch

  • So... basically I need to buy a copy of his book. =P

  • Talented, good, kind drummer... I like theese videos

  • your drum set is really nice and you play really good

  • its got a cascara feel to it...

  • This is quite tricky at first.

I notice you mainly start the 1st example with

    ACCENT GHOST ACCENT.........repeat

it follows, therefore, that it can also be started

    A A G or G A A

each one has a slightly different feel which is cool.

If you keep playing each variation, eventually the bass beat on the '1' syncs up with the first hi hat beat of each of the 3 variations, (if you see what i mean) , so its basically one beat but with 3 different start places....

  • Playing 1.bass, 2.snare, 3.bass, 4.snare is easy enough, but when you start adding in more intersting bass parts......!!!!!!!ahhh!!!!!

    intersting shit tho.....

  • The polyrhythm feel it creates reminds me of when Bill Withers sings ' i know, i know, i know, i know, i know, i know.......' in 'aint no sunshine'.......

  • Yeah, you´re right, I can see you spend some time with this pattern. Groups of three are very common, once you develop the feel, you´re gonna notice them in a lot of songs, not only used by drums. Cheers

    Ydna

  • yeah, you hear it loads, but normally the 'group of three' feel only lasts one bar, where the last 3 has an added beat (3, 3, 3, 3, 4), this allows the pattern to repeat each bar.

What's different here, is that you dont get that group of 4, the hat pattern just continues....

Its a bit weird coz the resolution point comes after 3 bars of 4/4, and the who the fuck can get into that?? still good tho...

  • polyrhythm 3 vs 2

  • it's actually 3 "vs" 4

  • Paiste probably?

  • Those hi-hats sound pretty freaking good. what brand are those?

  • These are 13" Zildijan K´s

  • yeah i know but people sometimes just refer to it as a 3:4 syncopated polyrhythm. id call it a polymetre though

  • sorta sounds like the polyryhthm that carey does in eulogy with the hi hat opening every third sixteenth note

  • Gross Gott!! Vielen Dank!

  • holy shiz this is amazing

    : O great job there :)

  • Really good!

  • wow man that was the sickest drum beat ive heard in a while, i definetly want to learn that

  • Very nice and clear teaching. I play keys but now I'm gonna learn some drummin'!

  • This is REALLY Great stuff.

Can i get hold of your book in the UK? I know I'm having a hard enough time getting Benny Greb's DVD at the moment.

  • Fantastic! Thanks

  • Try to play this beat without opening the hi-hats first. Add the open hats once you become really comfortable playing the whole 3bar pattern.. This should be way easier to learn. Good luck

  • because this is a pollyrhythm, what is the best way you would suggest learning to count it in 3's against a 4/4 beat, i've been trying to learn this for a few days now and i can count straight 16th notes out loud wile playing just the hihat part with my right hand and left foot, but them i try to bring the rest of the beat in it all goes wrong. any help?

  • I find its easier not to think of it as a pollyrhythm at all. I'm pretty sure it comes down to the same thing if you play straight 16ths with your lead hand and open the hats every third stroke. Like he mentioned it becomes a three bar pattern. Take the time to write it on paper if it helps.

  • but that then becomes a polyrythm. you just avoided callig it that really

  • Ive found the ultimate online drum teacher. And he's God! disguised as a drummer!

  • the first rhythm is from tool no??

    a wicked danny carey trick

  • tools rhythm?danny carey is first drummer played that?i didnt know

  • very close! this guy opens the hi hat every other beat while danny opens his hi hat every 2 hits.

    almost the same

  • no danny opens his ever 3 hits, making a polyrythm, or a polymetre, depending on how you want to call it

  • its still two meters going at the same time though. doesnt matter how often he opens it as long as it's still a pattern of 3.

  • I mean every 3 hit

  • Loving the open-handed playing at the end!

  • that first groove is danny carrey's part at the end of eulogy

  • Yeah, it is! I love that part in the song, great application of the concept.

  • High Note Music has both books, Decibels sells only the Breakbeat Guide at the moment...

  • where can u buy it in powell river decibles, high note music etc.?

  • Thanks again man!!

  • You´re very welcome :-)
