This song still amazes me after 35 years; I can understand how the cynical record execs cried after hearing them perform it. I also read one time that Jim Seals started writing the song about Ruby and nearly had the first verse completed - when Dash Crofts heard the song he said there's no way you can write this song without letting me write about Billie. The middle part of the song is about their kids, Joshua and Lin - to keep the song a secret they called it R&B waltz!
I live in south Florida, but when I hear this song, and others like it, I'm back in the north country woods where I grew up. And where my spirit still lives. I don't remember this one from my childhood, but there is something familiar to it. I must have heard it when I was young and it must have stayed with me. I have been playing it over and over today, becoming emotional each time. Thanks for posting this.
my poetry teacher in 78 gave me a test on this song-------then they showed up in johnson city---you've no idea what a great song this is --- for so many reasons---
i heard this a few times when i was little. Now that i have grown many years later, the melody stayed with me still. Haunting yet hopeful, reassuring, playful and bright, this song and a few others like it have become treasured companions in my long solitary days, and for whom a need for constant nearness shall long endure into my old age.
@avengermedia37 Yes.... Very well put my friend. Haunting yet hopeful.....that you wrote that, made me cry. Guess I'm not too happy right now. Beautiful song
Seals and Crofts not only gave beautiful music to millions of people whose lives, whether as individuals or communal, would otherwise have been anything but productive members of any society had it not been for the inspiration and vision
that these uniquely talented artists selflessly shared through their powerful message reflectively found in their songs. You did a really good job in sharing and posting this musical offering. May you continue to enjoy the fruit of your labor, boswell69.
these guys were so beautifully connected. whoa..and wow! my hippie parents spoon fed me these songs and as an older woman these songs double hit me. :)
This one has just an amazing melody, guitar playing is just superb combined with an amazing voices. PERFECT!! Long after i'm dead, this song will still be played.
we'll have children of the kingdom, they won't be torn by war ,nor will they kill or hate , or hesitate to love. I was 16 when i heard thes lyrics, and have been with me for last 38 years! Now I have 2 beautiful mixed grandchildren. This is what i want them to learn too!!! thanks for the post!!1
was born way after they shot thru the charts in a place that has probably never heard of them. but thanks to my mum who played this non-stop while i was a toddler... and it's only now i got to understand the lyrics. it's simply nourishing. thanks boswell69!
The answer to this long lasting ailment called the human race lies in Community. Community of oneness and tolerance with and with others. Seals & Crofts has said it, clearly....."Uniting All, they wont be torn by war nor will they kill or hate or Hesitate to Love". Live As 1. Live As 1.

NOT FORGOTTEN! :-) When we brought each of our children home from the hospital (1976 and 1983), the first stop on the way to the nursery was the living room, where we played Ruby Jean and Billie Lee for them as a "welcome home" song. It beautifully expressed our hopes for the kind of world in which they would grow up and live. "We'll have children of the Kingdom. They won't be torn by war, nor will they kill or hate, or hesitate to love justice." REAL MUSIC! Thanks for posting this! ;-)
I remembered seeing a music video of Ruby Jean and Billie Lee back then early 1980's. It was a rare thing then. But i can vividly recall it.Is there any way we could retrieve it.
One of the great all time duo's, I grew up with this music and got to see them perform live in the 1970's. Seals & Crofts and will always have a place in my heart. Boswell, Thank you for posting!
I appreciate people like you who put wonderful songs on youtube. So often I have words and tunes from my childhood running through my head. With beautiful people like you it takes minutes on youtube to find the song I can't get out of my head. Because of this, I have shared your videos with many friends, and purchased several songs on amazon. Thank you for your help. Without it I would definitely go crazy singing ten second sections of unknown songs to myself.
i'm only 35 yrs old and i love Seals and Crofts! We were raised listening to this music because my Pops always played the tape over and over in the car on road trips! It grew on us and we started to like all the songs! Great Memories!
One of the better songs that has been forgotten. Jim Seals was a great songwriter and they were a terrific duo. It's also interesting to see how they took their Bahai beliefs and created well crafted pop/folk songs.
Not forgotten at allBoswell69. Not at all. I've carried this song in my heart and all my cassette and now CD / MP3 compilations forever. True beauty as you don't usually fins in music these days. Well, hasn't thr world changed ? Thumbs Up.
this song is absolutely pure and beautiful...a masterpiece. These guys were/are so very talented! And how strange to see pictures from Woodstock with them on stage... how did they cross over into the hard rock and roll scene of those days? This song is timeless, I haven't heard it in years and wow.....great feelings and memories......thank u boswell69
@dencrandall There was a folk rock vibe for part of woodstock - whether it was CSNY, Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez and Tim Harden to name a few.
@dencrandall I forgot to add that Seals and Crofts didn't play at Woodstock - they really didn't become successful until around 1971. The concert footage you see is from the California Jam in 1974; other acts were Rare Earth, Earth Wind and Fire, The Eagles, Black Oak Arkansas, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Emerson Lake and Palmer. It may not be as famous as Woodstock but it is one of the most important rock festivals.

What a beautiful love song.
Oh Ruby Jean, last night I dreamed I was runnin' somewhere beyond the stars.
I called out to you, and you answered softly.
You are the children's eyes, and I'm the days gone by.
Oh Ruby Jean, it doesn't seem like a long, long time, since we were born again.
Into the dazzling light, uniting black and white.
You are the rich brown earth, and I'm the flowers that grow.
