Everyone makes AWOL's out to be horrible people, but they are not. Every AWOL case is different but even if they person is not against the war but just feel they made a huge mistake, the Army SHOULD work with these people, but sadly do not. The only option left for them is to go AWOL. This guy is the real hero in my opinion, it took more courage to leave than to deploy.

He shouldnt have joined the Army during a time when the country is indulging in two separate wars. I'm surprised he expected them to be honest with him. A recruiter is there to get you from the small leased office to the big battlefield. No one should expect anything less.

Hello, For all that read this you must first realize no matter what the lure is or if it is your choice the fact remains that this is an all volunteer military and the choice is yours and if you are bright enough to pass the ASVAB then you should have enough knowledge and understanding that The Military is a security force like no other and supporting the means of the objective is essentail even if this means protecting service members as needed . The choice was yours. Man up and not for the $ .

I don't even like the whole concept of AWOL. If I quit my job as a teacher, I would not be arrested. It's just a stupid policy. Being a soldier is a job, just like anything else is, they shouldn't get special positive or negative treatment because of wanting a new job.

If the government does not want to attract those who do not want to fight, they should stop bribing people to join.

i can understand your FEAR as of singing up and i know there's been some pretty shady things that have happened with recruiters i know because some of my friends who joined the army and the marines really got screwed but what i tell everyone is if your afraid to get killed or kill the military is not for you in my case Ive been to several recruitment offices but with the amount of circles i was put through i decided to wait i want to be the best soldier i can be to serve my country

Nobody forced him to join. He did for the money and to get away from his troubles. Even if the chance was slim that he would see action, there was still a chance. He knew this before signing. Now he is told that he has to go to war. "But I'm against killing" How convienient. He would have stayed in if we were enjoying peacetime or if he did not have to fight. I'm an ex Marine, sensitive, and would not hurt a fly. I knew that I may have to kill before signing up. And was prepared to do so.

I don't think I can sympathize with someone who is AWOL, unless they have deployed before. Yes the Army does prey on desperate people, but that is no excuse to go AWOL. You signed a contract, swore an oath, went through training. If you didn't sign up to literally kill people, you are assisting those that have to kill people.

I agree with most everything you say, going awol after signing a contract is always bad. when you sign up for military service, nowhere does it mention killing. Your oath is to protect the constitution of the usa, not kill people to spread our beliefs.

I really ask me what people expect when they join the military. If you dont want to fight in a war you should not join the Army. But okay, I think the recruiters should be honest and I also ask my why they send National Guard people into war that should be fought by regular soldiers in the first place.

recruters are liars, period. if the recuter had told him the truth, i'm sure he wouldn't have joined. they are also predators, going after poor people by having rediculous numbers of recutment offices in the ghettos more so than in the suburbs. they lure people in by promising to pay for college and telling people that they will "see the world". the recuters are predatory, plain and simple. i am speaking from experience. also, there are no such thing as "regular solders".

The average sheeple in the public has no clue about MIC or the reality of their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters being recruited as fresh meat for the slaughter - just cause my ass! A good recruiter does what is called the "take away" -- at every step the recruiter should try to talk the prospective recruit out of joining TO BE CERTAIN THAT IT IS A GOOD Human resource FIT. This is what PROFESSIONAL talent scouts are trained to do. Military recruiters are vultures.
