Great film.Too bad they are having a tough time getting this a North American release.Con O`Neil is brilliant in this.Good turn for Kevin Spacey in a small part.
I love this song so much. I used to go to a little 50's revival place in the 80's and listen to it over and over on their AMI Continental 1 Jukebox. And imagine the future people were hoping for "as opposed to the one they got". I can only hope this movie makes it to the torrents so we can see it here, thats about my only hope of EVER seeing this. :(
I saw stageplay about 4 years ago in theatre near SW London, before it did West End. Went with a group of fans, all 40something Londoners. Play was great, far more intense than film, less music more drama, Con was fantastic. I suggested that maybe the language was too ripe, my mate's honest reply was thats how we talk here in London, end of. I'm not sure he's right wrt the Londoners back in the 50/60s, of course they all wern't Dick Van Dyke Chirpy Cockneys, but that was his view.
@RockinRedRover my parents are in their 70s and 80s years young, So remember the meeks output and the songs, tunes etc.I personally would have taken them to the flicks to see the film, But pulled against that idea after viewing it. shame about that
@skawashers yes it is. Spose commendable the makers stuck by their ideals rather than just make money, but I think got balance wrong. I'm from nr Joe's home, we did cuss !. Dennis Potter moved from here to London in 50s too, his stories have been v poplar TV dramas using "bugger" etc without offending, he wouldnt use the "f" word although must have heard it, its this that I think was overdone in film.
@RockinRedRover ..Oh Yeah i know people cursed and swore in the 40s. 50s 60s onwards , who didnt or doesnt I swear alot. But it was slightly excessive..
The reasons why it didn't get a nation wide screening around the country. Is because its a british film. British backed, British made. And Cinema houses are Owned by Americans. So are more Likely to show their own films than some small Indie flick. Also you can add Harold Pinter to Dennis potter and 50s TV
I didnt mention the US element as I upset people on here for daring to state facts to the colonials. If it wasnt for them accidentally arriving late in 2 WORLD wars (too busy profiteering off their so-called ALLIES), then they wouldnt be the (once) great power they (used) to be, all hail China I say.
@RockinRedRover Maybe if the film title was changed to "Dude where's my Record Contract" Or " I wonder if ive got a shot with my landlady" Then it might have had more appeal to an American Audience
Does anyone know the name of the song playing in the background towards the end of the trailer, not 'Telstar', but the one after Meek cocks his shotgun?
the film was made for people to view and enjoy or dislike. Thats the object of making the film to show to others, If they didnt want criticisms. Then it wouldn't be in the cinema Do i have to spell it out anymore or do you need your mummy to help you read the difficult words. When you hit puberty and they let you into the cinema to see adult films maybe you might enjoy it as well. so why dont you just stick to the hoobs
so was you in the cinema i was in when people was tutting and a few walked out Or am i imagining that you have nothing of great substance to say other than what you already have done.
i saw this other day . And i throughly enjoyed it But one snag i had , A large part of the audience was made up from people who was around when meek was doing his records and each swear word came out on the film i cringed at the thought of how the elderly audience members would take all the swearing. One or two people did walk out in the first hour.
True to character it may have been, and it would be madness to think that swearing didn't go on in the 1960's, but do films really NEED it?
I love to share films with my parents, but I know they would find the swearing unnecessary. That's them though - they grew up in an age where you could avoid it and you certainly wouldn't hear it in the home.
Considering the various liberties taken with the stageplay to make it a "commercial" film, then I do think the language should have been toned down for it to gain its deserved success on general FULL release around the UK in major cinemas, not the small ones its showed in. By coincidence I come from West Glostershire only a 10 miles from Joe's hometown, and believe me they didnt/dont use the F word every 5 seconds !
I am hoping that this movie will be shown in Canada? I have been a "Tornados" fan since I first heard "Telstar" as a young boy in Canada and immediately was mesmerized by it, even to this day it stills commands a wonderful sound. "Joe Meek" was no doubt a true innovator and a pioneer recording genius.. Does anyone know when "Telstar- The Movie" will be released in Canada?
As well as to when the DVD of the movie will be available for the general public to purchase.
I recall being a young boy when the great instrumental "Telstar" came out. Jaw-dropping at the time. Still has the power to flood my mind with the memories of youth, and upon every hearing, Im once more that child of 12 who rode his bike all over a small town. The story of Joe Meek is bitter-sweet. :(
I HAVE TO SEE THIS!! Mathew Baynton <3

hope this comes out here in the States. I'm a huge fan of the so-called British Invasion. Some of the "pre invasion" music is good too.

this is actually a sad movie, no happy endings really.

parts of the film are factually incorrect
why was John peel in the film
John Peel didnt even work for the NME or any Music publication
At the time of Joe Meek he would have been doing his national Service then after would have been in America
Also at the time of Meek, John Peel was still using his name John Ravenscroft
