Wow they kinda cleaned up the place. I remember it kinda being run down... graffiti ridden, unkept and smelled like cat piss. 50 years from now, the 9/11 memorial may wind up like this place off limits and behind barricades. Sad.
@Brandtalones This was fairly early in the day, but yes there's usually a lively lunch crowd. It's near Columbia University, and this area gets the spillover campus crowd, office workers, etc. Thanks for watching!
@sbt420 thats instresting never thought of it like that,,, lincolns tombe abe is burried in his tombe under 10 feet of cement,,,under his tombe the rest of the lincolns are burried in the walls of the tombe,,,lincolns casket is in a cage which is burried under the 10 foot thick cement,,lincoln was moved 17 times since he died for different reasons i think he moved more when he was dead than when he was alive,,,but it is instresting on grants tombe
@203207ab I've heard that. In the 60s, 70's,, new york was considered a crime ridden hell hole of filth and crime. But thanks to good administration,, has apparently be totally transformed.
They've definitely got people thinking thumbs WAY UP or WAY DOWN, don't they? The only thing I know is that they're not bad to sit down in after a long jog....
Those benches are an abomination. Grant's body should be moved to Arlington. It is in a seedy part of Manhatten and is unappreciated by New Yorkers as evidenced by those horrendous benches.
The benches are controversial, but the tomb will always stay put for Grant AND his wife. One can't really put her in Arlington, so that's a roadblock to your suggestion; the government won't split up the couple. The good news is that this is NOT a seedy neighborhood; it's one of the most expensive real estate neighborhoods in NYC now and is next to booming Columbia University. It's in an historic district and is widely visited. I'm neutral on the benches; like all art, they stir mixed reactions.

I looks rather lonely there. I don't know when you were about, but that scene needs a bit more in the way of humanity.
Do people lunch there?

Hmm, terrible looking chairs - completely out of context for the area of a tomb to a 'national hero'
- from an Australian who otherwise doesn't care

Why can't Grant's wife be in Arlington? By the way, where is Jackie Kennedy buried?
