That's interesting Ferg, I can't understand why Townshend would have said that: maybe because the band would have been more stable with Kenny rather than Keith? I mean, they're chalk and cheese: Moon the Loon and dependable down-to earth Kenny. Funnily enough, I prefer Townshend's solo output (Empty Glass LP) to much of the Who's later output and wouldn't miss Daltrey at all. But that's about the Who, not the Small Faces, (whose "Watchya Gonna Do 'bout It" was one of my favourite records).
I'm with you on "Watchya Gonna Do 'bout It," and also really dig "All or Nothing." In fact, I must admit I find myself listening to the Small Faces more and more lately. Been spending some time introducing others as well. Probably my favorite band these days.
I don't know the internal politics, but the fact that Jones is alive and kicking, yet Townshend's got Starkey behind him now does rather suggest it's seen within the band as an improvement! Like that story about when Lennon was asked "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" he replied "In the world? He's not even the best drummer in the band!" My rating for Mr Jones a a professionl drummer: 6/10.
Well, I read that Townshend stated recently that he wished Jones had been their drummer from day one. Its pretty clear that Daltrey disliked Jones and gave Townshend the "him or me" business, and that was that regarding Kenny. Not sure why their was friction, sometimes I think Daltrey could'nt stand to see anyone other than Moon behind the kit, and maybe suffered some guilt towards Keith's self-destruction. Only speculation on my part. Anyway, thanks for the input.
@fergster11 Well ferg, I wouldn't say "awful" but to my ears he doesn't have much finesse and doesn't ever really sit in a groove, like say, Charlie Watts (who most old rockers like myself consider to be the mutt's nuts). Take a listen to Ritchie Hayward (RIP) with Little Feat, Matt Johnson (Geoff Buckley's drummer on Grace LP) or Sam Lay, Muddy Waters' drummer to hear a drummer doing his job properly.
Ken Jones belongs to what we call the "Shed-Building" school of drumming: bang, bang, bang. Yes, he's had a long career. Lucky man. Now runs a polo club. So what? If it don't swing, it don't mean a thing, cloth ears. (P.S. correction to first part : "overjoyed" )
Interesting, I'm not a drummer, so I don't understand all your lingo. I watched some Starkey videos, he is pretty awesome, don't know if he measures up to Moon, but he is definitly good. Do you think Kenny is awful? Where do you rate him amongst the others?
@fergster11 Calm down dear, it's only a drummer. "Starkey? Ya right" What does that mean?
The other 3/4 of the Who could hardly approach him while he was still in baby-rompers could they? They took who was available. When Moon was ill in 1966 they played Derry with the drummer out of (Bolan's) John's Children (I know, because our band played support). Doesn't mean they were ovejoyed .
Kenny's having fun isn't he? Sounds like someone kicked a dustbin down a fire-escape, shame it drags the beat all the way through. Moon could get away with this kind of thing, but he was a different class of drummer. It has taken Zak Starkey to fill his shoes in The Who.
Kenny is doing just fine without your comment, not every drummer can be Moon, a genius, but also a foolish, attention-grubbing asshole. Starkey? Ya right. The Who went straight to Kenny when Moon died stupidly. Kenny has had a solid career, and is one of the most energetic, and respected British drummers of all time. Townsend Daltry and Entwistle did'nt have any problem with Kenny, so why should you?
i think they are called whos who but from what macaly has said about them they are meant to be fkn amazing

Incidentally, Townshend used Simon Phillips on drums on the solo album, not Jones, further confusing matters for us!

is that 'blue noses' or 'Mods'?
Well, at least with all of yours (and everybody else's) output 'CC' we know the Mod story will never die or be forgotten!
As for blue noses...looks like your finished for this season anyway!
EastEndMods 3 years ago
yep m8 definately, r u going to this who tribute band on the 19th this month
lol as for the season being finished no comment until after the 27th lol

Is that a different Who tribute to the one played last month?
There's a crowd going to 'From The Jam' tomorrow (13/12) but next time i'm up will be for Friday Street at Hogmany.
Have you seen anything about this Mods Mayday in Brum? May 2009 - there should be a few going to that.
