@rainerfilm actually I spent 20 years shooting commercially, I now own a graphic design firm and shoot just for myself. You can see some of my hobby work on flicker under the same name. Have a nice day.
I am using a "diamond cloth" back drop. And one big light. The white sheet is always a little bluish. Am trying to customize the white balance, but unless I open the lens pretty big (5.6), the backdrop still has a little color. I want the backdrop to be WHITE. What should I do?
Thanks! This was so helpful, and much easier than I could have ever guessed! I have read the manual for my d700 multiple times only to be bored to death and not get anywhere. I use a 6" Photovision calibration target for exposure and white balance, though anything that is neutral (white/black/grey) will work.
You can use a gray card if you want to, it's just a bit less convenient to carry around since it doesn't fold up. I wouldn't use a white piece of paper or posterboard. If you go to any office supply store and look at their different "white" papers you will see that they can vary greatly.

@blackcaim set your WB to auto. WB isn't about object colors it's about light colortemp.

@bodiegroup You are obviously not a professional photographer if you use auto WB.

D3, D700, D300 all have the same procedure.
You can use a gray card if you want to, it's just a bit less convenient to carry around since it doesn't fold up. I wouldn't use a white piece of paper or posterboard. If you go to any office supply store and look at their different "white" papers you will see that they can vary greatly.

You also said that you're testing on a D3. That was not a D3. Probably a D700. I know it doesn't make much of a difference; just saying.
Is there a WAY cheaper way of doing this? Like a gray card/posterboard.
rocklobster2112 2 years ago
I think he said D300, not D3. This is the DX version of the D700 FF.
I use half of a white 3 ring binder that I cut apart (works fine and cleans up easy). It's one of the matte ones.

the other way of doing this is actually setting the K value - the temperature.
