An all time great film coupled with melodious songs, epitomic thumris, effortless dance, real-like sets, dialogues with great tehzeeb and everything else you may expect from such a legend were present in this film.
Thank you - you are helping learn more about this film, despite living in the u.s.a - i wish I could see the original too - it looks equally beautiful in black and white.
Meena Kumari & Kamal Amrohvi had marital problems. She refused to work for him. They got divorced. He could not replace her. She was the girl: Nirgis. Even heavy make up and lights could not hide the aged Nirgis. She died after the film. There is no other actor, male or female who can reach or surpass her in acting sorrowful, may be, Marlon Brando: On the Water Front. I have known both of them as a child.
Urdu, by its name, is a combination of many languages, borrowing the most important tense from Hindi, English, being the other: continuous tense not found in other languages. Hindi is the daughter of Sanskrit, that is itself the combination of ancient Iranian and Dravidian languages. Making Urdu or Hindi separate languages is restricting their development. Language is the biggest unifier & divider of people. Hindi-Urdu speakers should unite. Amrohvi:i. Amroha's adjective is to add vi.
To all the Hindi vs Urdu bashers. Don't bother commenting on this clip as I will delete your comments. I will not put up with such childish behaviour. You guys need to grow up and learn to respect one another.
Thanks! :-) We have such beautiful languages and cultures I don't see why folks can't respect them and be proud of our heritages rather than bash each other.
The coloured version is more realistic then the B&W version...the black and white version is less realistic and missed that real touch and feel and looks completely filmi, despite of its grand set. I am glad that Kmal Amrohi's changed the atmosphere of pakeeza in coloured version and gave it a realistic touch.
this version of the film was never even made completely due to meena and amrohi's divorce, the film was then completed after about sixteen years in colour and was released in the year 1971......
that clip was awsome... it would be great to see the whole thing eh?..
apparently on wiki.. it says that the movie didn't release the first time cuz of meena kumari and her husbands divorce... (he was the man behind the camera... aka.. director..) and therefore they were unable to complete it.. then sunil dutt and wife told them to do it again.. and hence we have the version we see on tv...
in all the dance meena had danced esp the reels which were made prior to '69 after which she fell sick and only then had a duplicate for her dance. whatever the case Lata was the one who gave Pakeezah the status it got also not to forget Ghulam mohammed the music director.
she was extremely ill and did not dance in ANY of the pakeezah songs,
they had another girl dance and put her face in!!!
its funny how they found this out like 50 years later, and yes it was on the news like 2 weeks ago. shes saying these people have stolen my scarf (the one on her head) then she says if you dont beleive me then ask that guy and that guy and its goes in order by each guy and how he witnessed the theft.
@GuruMM yes you are right !!! she looks visibly old and ill in that song...
rest in all the songs she did her own steps !!! u may note "chalte chalte" where she was suppose to dance, but because of her bad health...she remained "seated" on the floor..for most of the song, while the two dancers in the background did all the dancing
I love the music of Lata Mangeshkar, and I work with movie film. The black and white in this clip is beautiful, the movie is a very high quality production. I only speak English. Can anyone please tell me if the Zee TV commentator is giving any clues as to who owns this movie? Old film goes bad over time. It is extremely important that this movie is preserved. I hope that whoever owns it is taking care of it.
I posted this in the hope that someday someone will find the full song (somewhere) and post it!
I was shocked to see this clip on Zee TV to begin with and I am glad that I happened to have my DVR set-up to capture it! Anyway - if anyone out there has any clue as to where we could see the full song let me know!!!
Hey from 0:36 to 0:40 she reminds me of madhuri dixit... funny how that happens.

However, many words in English are from Arabic, Sanskrit and other languages as well. English is not pure language either.
