It strikes me that Fleur did the same kind of "ownership" thing that Soames did...they both believed that if they had sex with someone that would make them "theirs."...when Fleur says "now we're married" after their 30 second romp...it was obvious that Jon was just completely burning up for Fleur and totally vulnerable and Fleur took advantage of him in that moment to try to posses him. Just like Soames took advantage of Irene when she was vulnerable. Same thing at the heart of it.
Uh Oh. Seems Soames has created a monster ~~ in his own image, shall we say? Puer Little Fleur, she takes right after her Dad. At the moment she's severely in need of some significant medications, lol. o_*\\
It wasn't like that in a book. They showed Soames perfectly beastly, but Galsworthy described him somewhat affectionately. In this scene he was quite polite. Definitely didn't throw himself on sheepish Irene.
sorry to go against all the non-lovers of Fleur, but she fights ONLY for their LOVE,which, for her,is synonym with LIFE (please, remember Rochester and Heathcliff)I don't say she fights fair, but who does?In the book, after years,Jon Spineless MAMA'S BOY discovers that he STILL needs and loves Fleur.Causing trouble and pain again.she was at the moment the mature person in the relationship, and ,afraid a little of exaggeration, the SEER.
Soames still harassing Irene - it's getting so old. It's too bad that Jon and Fleur can't be together but I think Michael was a better match for her. Would have liked to see Jon find love too.
I have never seen this series before and am hooked. It's interesting how I had that Bach running through my head already as they were arguing in the garden! I don't understand all the dislike of Irene - I pity her, right from the start! I don't think it's fair to put modern standards and behaviours onto characters from the Victorian times and the 20s. Back in those days, Irene wouldn't have any say or 'rights' in a marriage. Basically if she wasn't happy then tough; and I feel for her
in the book, Soames doesn't behave like that- he's impassive, cold, dignified, but unlovable. Soames isn't always full of seething rage like this. In this scene in the book- he just asks Irene- and soames says- you wouldn't have to see me except for the marriage- he doesn't say anything about being bad wife- you should read the books - Fleur doesn't say anything about "Mine" read the books- these goddamn writers twist book characters however they want.

@TokyoSpike Fleur's run is not a Hollywood run. Many real women run like Fleur runs. Like you, I noticed the run and thought it refreshing to see some "real" on screen. There is an abundance of "real" in BBC dramas compared to Hollywood. The BBC is quite fine.
It's such a pity that Soames' passion is mostly interpreted as "possessiveness." Not that it isn't. It's just, like his mother said, he feels too much and doesn't know how to express except by showing it through material ways. He did love Irene deeply, as shown by how her photo was hidden in his wife's photo frame and how he listened to piano pieces, reminiscent of her. He is mostly misunderstood and often expressed his love the wrong way. His daughter inherited the same "passion."
Soooo not impressive to disrespect your intended's mother! Tsk, tsk, you little mini me. All Irenee asked for was a litle time to morn the recent death.
If Irene was so repulsed by Soames why did she marry him? Goldigger? Maybe? I don't think some of the things he did was right, but Irene was a cold piece of work herself. But Soames and his daughter is a lil wackoooo lol

Ok I know I'm in the definite minority of thinking as i watch this series (which I'm loving btw) But i feel sorry for Soames. He shouldn't have done what he did to Irene, that one night, but he seems like a loving guy overall and just doesn't know how to express it well. Is it easy for any of us to let someone go we love? Granite, he does seem to take things a little far. Still,I think as a whole he's a good guy.
@dud2012stud The only reason I'm watching this show is because of Soames. I think if he had married a loving wife instead of the cold Irene, most of the bad stuff in this series wouldn't of happened in the first place. And Soames would have turned out a hell of alot different.
@mooga55 Oh please, Soames was a fully-formed adult when he met and married Irene, who was not yet 20, and who told him at first that she would not marry him, and then agreed only if she could get out of it. Irene was only cold because she despised him, a man who knew the price of everything and the value of nothing. Have you not been watching, to see how much she loved Jolyon, and how happy they were together? That's because they freely chose each other and looked at life the same way.
@dud2012stud You're not really in the minority. I spent most of the series feeling sorry for Soames, except when he bullied and stalked her for a son after years of separation. He got shafted with Irene and then he got shafted with Annette (even if they didn't love each other, it doesn't mean it was OK to be with that sleazy Profond. Though he loved his daughter and went out out of comfort zone to see Irene, it seems that his daughter cares more about her own interests than her father himself.
@ColumRogers that is because she does have the tendency to be cold, and she has to understand and expect Soames to be still angry afterall she cheated on him with not only his niece's fiancee' but his own cousin. He also has to expect her to be fearful and angry towards him he did assault her.

Father and daughter are sofocating and obsessive when it comes to love. Poor Fleur it is her father's doing for spoling her too much.
