how old do they need to be to mate? because i noticed one of my sliders was doing tht to the other but the other was just there like, what are you doing? ones bigger and the bigger one has faint orange marks on the side of his head
My red eared sliders that are only about 1 year old were doing that. I notices that male kept swimming to the female no matter what. Then he stuck his claws in front if her face and wiggled them.
do the turtles lay the eggs in the water? because i have 2 res and they do that all the time but they never laid any eggs....and one of my turtles has res sores on its back legs...its it gonna be infected?
I agree, I have both male and female turtles. also (10 years old) the female turtle i had laid her eggs a couple of times, (10 times aproximly) and the eggs were eaten. =_= felt bad for the babies turtles. How do those turtle laid their egg. and what should i do, for in case if it happen again. I wanna see a turtle family in my tank.

my res does that for a while and the other doesnt want to mate..ive been thinking of taking the turtle mating out of the tank and into another....and the other day i saw something comeing out my turtles back side...it was a black fat thing i think out of the tail... and it was connected and then all of a sudden it went small and back into the turtle....i asked my dad he said shes prob having a baby but thats the second time shes done that..please help thnx
@armeniandude99 that turtle you're talking about is a male. male also are smaller and have longer nails. That black thing you saw is its genital (penis)
I've got a male turtle around the age of 6. He's alone in his tank and he sometimes seperates a black stone from the other colored ones. He then backs up and wiggles his nails just like the video on top of it. Should i be concerned or is he just practicing? xD
Unless you take the eggs out of water a couple hours after they are laid, the eggs will drowned. Thats probably why they have not hatched. Look up care instructions online and make sure if you have them and try to hatch them, that you keep the side that was facing up when laid stays facing up after you move them.
I have 2 turtles one male one female and theyve been doing this "dance" for about 2 days now, they are about the size of a human fist, are they going to most likely lay eggs?
I have two female RES. I have put them in a smaller bin so I can clean and refill the larger tank/bin (40 gal) I keep them in. I just saw the larger of the females circling and flicking her claws in the smaller one's face. They touched noses and that was pretty much it. Does this mean anything significant? I rescued them both from a bucket about 5 years ago when they were the size of quarters. The are much larger now. Thanks Heaps for your time.
You pervert! Lol, j/k. Anyways, they look so human, the way their doing it. I got two, I think female, RED sliders. Very cute. One's an adult, the other's a teen.
ok im reasearching ho breed turtles cz i hav a feale red eared sider. and im reading about this matig dance and his is wat it says:
"The mating dance of this species is very elaborated and interesting to observe. The male swims towards the female and starts caressing her face with his long front claws. He might also swim around her in circles. He might also strike her front shell lightly with his claws. If she is receptive, she will accept him." so was the female turtle being "receptive?"
make sure the eggs are warm and moist if not you should grab them ang bury them in a bucket of sand carefully . for more info search here on youtube and google
so.. question.. my turtles which are only several months old just did this... neither has shown distinctive sign of being either a male or female until now. after they did this little ritual one of them procceded to attempt to procreate with the ground which was interesting.. don't know if you know but do turtles mate when they're young and is this ritual a sure sign or can it have no meaning sometimes?
@DGceNt you'll notice at the very end he nips her nose this is just another mating ritual not agression. If you are feeding them and they start biting each other thats bad thats aggression
@ KingBarlow .. can i have a question pls. ..? my res are mating theyre just about 5 inches ... can my female res het pregnant ? i think shes a whore >>
@09398708823 yes i think she can but they can remain pregnant for years before actually laying eggs and the conditions have to be right she wont lay them in a tank
I have two ten year old red eared sliders. The male does this all the time to the female. He bites her a lot too. At one point he kept biting her paws over and over until she had huge sores on them and I had to take her out of the tank until they fully healed. I don't know what to do...... Nobody I know wants a big male turtle, so I am kinda screwed. I don't want to release him into the wild because i don't know if he would survive, but I don't know what else to do. :(
@Sparks044 Do not release him in the wild almost every captive turtle that is released into the wild dies because they do not know how to hunt for food or get away from predators.
@Sparks044 sorry for not replying a whle ago but my aunt killed them buy putting them in a little contanier and I think she crushed them and she broke into our room because she was keep p[laying with them she was oobssed with them. :(

do the eggs look like baloons because i was recently cleaning the tank and i saw something that looked like a tiny baloon and when i picked it up it popped
@co0lkid98 if this keeps happening and you want to hatch the turtle eggs put the turtle in a differerent tank with sand and organic material like moss but make sure to take out rocks or big chips of wood p.s.if there is not a male in the regular tank with the female the eggs are most likely unfertal
Female sliders don't reach sexual maturity until they are seven years old (human years, not dog years), males do not reach maturity until they are 5 years. They can show all the signs of the mating dance, but nothing can happen until maturity is reached.
my big female red eared turtle is less active and my male has recently mated and she spends time under the heat lamps more i added another heat lamp she tends to stay longer even if i come into the room, i have a big 75 gallon pond. in my house what do i do if she lays the eggs can i pick them up and put them in a warm basking light with potting soil?
Is it possable for a stinkpot turtle to be breed with a red eared slider? I am asking becaues i recently received a turtle and i do not know what species he is. He has the face, legs, shell pattern, and habit of a stinkpot. But he has a shell pattern, red bloch on his neck as a red eared slider. Also he has the bottom shell pattern of both. So if any body knows if this is true or if they know what species it is please tell me.
@SK83RJOSH Turtles flutter (shake their nails) to also show dominance over objects and territory. Females will flutter at females, and males will flutter at males to establish dominance. When a male flutters at a female, it is almost always a mating ritual.
Is there a way to make them stop? I have a turtle that is 1 year and is doing it, to my baby turtle that is only a few months old.. I dont want her to get pregnant because it isnt a good habitat for mating and laying eggs... Also are red earred sliders supposed to mate with other breeds? and, is he retarded because he is mating at such a young age??? Please help
@Sugarbabe2545 she wont get pregnant if the habitat isnt right. and even if she laid eggs they wouldnt make it in a fish tank. they wont even mate until the female is mature.
@KingBarlow But she only a few months old, I don't see why my 2 year old turtle is mating with her.. I don't know if he is retarded since he is doing this at at the age of almost 2...
@Sugarbabe2545 my baby turtles do the same thing the only way to see if your female turtle is pregnant fell your turtle's belly and see if the turtles are less active
I have been keeping terrapins for 2 years and they have never mated. I have spent so much money on setups etc like $3500. If you keep Terrapins then you realise how expensive they are to keep properly. Forget about breeding them unless you have a pond in your garden because it is nearly impossible to breed them indoors. Anyway they make great pets.
@Sugarbabe2545 A turtle which is a few months old is simply too young and too small to become pregnant. Females do not reach sexual maturity until 3 to 4 years of age, and a shell size of 7 to 8 inches long.
my two do that and there only 6 months old! plus there two different kinds of turtle one is a mississippi map(boy) and the other is a peninsula cooter (girl). is it even possible for my two to mate?
My two used to do this a lot. Strangely enough though, their both males. o_o
Also, my filter made that noise a lot too. I think you've got it too close to the surface or something. Your aerating the water? Why? o_o;; Turtles dont need oxygen in their water.
But wouldnt extra aeration mean extra algae growth also? I'm not sure. My tanks messed up in any case, we need to get a better enclosure for my two RES's. -_- My other enclosure for my up-and-coming Snakenecks is MUCH better. : )
Finding a decent filter is hard though. : (
I find even Fluval and so on sucks pretty bad. (Ironic comment of the year.)
Yeah, I know what you mean, I think I have that stuff still spare left over from my old tropical fish tank. : ) I wasn't particularly sure if you could use it with terrapins, but heck, if you can use it for fish, why not? : {
Yeah. Mines had been doing it for a long, long time, and nothing ever came out of it. They were seperated for about six months when a lot of family disasters all occurred at once and one of them had to go to a different tank in a different house.
Nowadays, when I put them together, there is NO tickling whatsoever. The smaller of the two just LITERALLY tries to kill the bigger one every time. No tickling or anything, just.. KIILLLL. And the big one doesnt even attack it ONCE.
@jhood87 They have been seperated. However, I no longer own them. But they have been seperated since the first very vicious fight that they had. I always knew that they were two males and they were a rescue case, and they were at first okay in a tank together. Just when they were seperated they decided they didn't want to be in the same tank anymore, and thus, they were seperated soon as I could manage. It was all the lil one being aggressive tho' - and I had a HUGE male that didn't care, lol.
i have a question; i have 2 red ear sliders, however, one is older then the other but they still do this (one is wild, the other domsestic) do you think mine will mate?
nope, like frogs they store water. this means too long with out water over a week is vary unhealthy for them because they sstart trning ab luish color on theyre shell and skinn from lack of water, and they may deie when they go back in the water too
LOL

It's just a dance to get the attention of the female,
mating is like sex..
in this dance they don't have that..
And they won't mate in a tank,
they need sand and a warm place

One of my turtles did that to the other, but he's only about a year and a half old. I seriously thought he was tryin to pick a fight or something!

dude you're and idiot. thats not a mating ritual, thats them fighting. i have two red ear sliders and thats they way they fight
seducelc 2 years ago
Errrm, youre the idiot my friend... This is how a male Turtle impresses a female. It IS the mating ritual.
The male will chase the female and then swim backwards and tickle the females face with it's claws to impress her.
diamondwolf130 2 years ago 4
your a dumbass that there premating move the male shows his nails to the female for acceptence and then the mating occures

Can anyone tell me why my 5 month old baby RES does that when it sees my finger outside of the tank?
It did it also when it was a newborn (like over a week old) and recently started doing it again! D:

Yay, tickly turtles. : D
My two used to do this a lot. Strangely enough though, their both males. o_o
Also, my filter made that noise a lot too. I think you've got it too close to the surface or something. Your aerating the water? Why? o_o;; Turtles dont need oxygen in their water.
tw1stedgrudge 2 years ago
oxygen in the water helps the filter, there are some good bacteria in the filter that get rid of the bad
ArmyofSeaturtles 2 years ago
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. x_x Sorry.
(Ironic comment of the year.)
tw1stedgrudge 2 years ago
i think some pets store have something you put in the water to stop algae growth
ArmyofSeaturtles 2 years ago
Yeah, I know what you mean, I think I have that stuff still spare left over from my old tropical fish tank. : ) I wasn't particularly sure if you could use it with terrapins, but heck, if you can use it for fish, why not? : {
tw1stedgrudge 2 years ago
i dont think its that harmful to turtles cuz fishes have to breath the water and their gills are really sensitive turtles just drink it
ArmyofSeaturtles 2 years ago
Yeah. : )
tw1stedgrudge 2 years ago
if the males do it to each other, this is a sign of dominance and the turtles may begin to fight.
cryptex220 2 years ago 3
Its all weird.
tw1stedgrudge 2 years ago 3
mee too
cryptex220 2 years ago
@tw1stedgrudge Your turtles should be in separate tanks, because they can and will injure one another.
jhood87 1 year ago
@jhood87 They have been seperated. However, I no longer own them. But they have been seperated since the first very vicious fight that they had. I always knew that they were two males and they were a rescue case, and they were at first okay in a tank together. Just when they were seperated they decided they didn't want to be in the same tank anymore, and thus, they were seperated soon as I could manage. It was all the lil one being aggressive tho' - and I had a HUGE male that didn't care, lol.
tw1stedgrudge 1 year ago
My turtle's just a tiny bit smaller than them and it's only a year old!
Jh5kRadio 2 years ago
APPARENTLY, The male thinks fluttering his nails in the female's face is HOT, and not freaky. =.=

the mating dance
cryptex220 2 years ago
nope, like frogs they store water. this means too long with out water over a week is vary unhealthy for them because they sstart trning ab luish color on theyre shell and skinn from lack of water, and they may deie when they go back in the water too
